Swansea Set to Move for Andrews
Swansea Set to Move for Andrews
Monday, 12th Dec 2011 11:12

On-loan midfielder Keith Andrews is reportedly set to join Swansea City from Blackburn Rovers once his spell at Portman Road comes to an end in January. The Swans are claimed to be willing to pay £2 million for the 31-year-old, who has scored eight goals for the Blues since joining on a temporary basis in August, although other reports suggest no fee will be involved.

Swansea and fellow Premier League side Wigan have both been linked with the Republic of Ireland international for some months, while Blues boss Paul Jewell has also made it clear he would like to keep Andrews, who has been standing in as skipper during Grant Leadbitter’s absence.

The Dubliner joined Blackburn from the MK Dons for £1.3 million in August 2008 and the League One side are entitled to 10% of the profit when the one-time Wolves and Hull City man is sold.

Meanwhile, defender Danny Collins, who returns to Stoke after Saturday’s home game with Derby, is again being linked with a switch to Wolves when the transfer window opens in January.

As with Andrews, Jewell would like to keep him at Portman Road but the Blues are unlikely to be able to compete with Premier League clubs in terms of wages and the transfer fee.

Collins, who like Andrews has 18 months remaining of his current contract, has admitted he faces a big decision when his 93-day loan comes to an end after the weekend.

It will be good if Andrews goes to see jimmy back to himself. He hates being the mark owen to andrews' gary barlow. He's more of a front of house kind of guy. But we will need three new defenders if collins goes. Can't have superman without louis lane. And Edwards ain't much of a Right back.

Andrews has shown he can't cut it in the premier league with Blackburn, so I'm surprised Swansea of all teams are the favourites to sign him, a team that bases their play on ball retention. Sadly Andrews does give the ball away too often.

Despite that he is so valuable I'm sure 90% of us would love to see him sign here, eight goals (probably more) before Christmas, imagine what he could get in a full season.

If Marcus Evans was prepared to pay £2.6m for Leadbitter and £2 5m for Norris, I can't see him complaining about this for Andrews. Will probably be up to the player in the end. Obviously I'm biased but having scored plenty of goals here, enjoyed living in the area, as he has said, and 'loved the club' you'd like to think he would like to stay here permanently.

We never thought we'd land Bullard, nor Chopra, and we did so...

Jewell would be best to turn his back on loanees with high wages and miles on the clock, and look to bring in young (mid twenties) hungry players.

We should be claiming a percentage of the fee from Blackburn for putting him in the shopwindow, because if he had not come here he would probably still been an unknown festering in the reserves !!!!!!!

while im not saying theres nothing in this story at all, there is a massive idiosyncrasy in this report. why would swansea be willing to pay £2m for him iof there is no fee involved?!!!! similarly. why would blackburn let him go for nothing if swansea willing to pay for him? so, while it could happen, i think at this time its just more idle speculation. have to say also, that i would be surprised if swansea would want him as he hardly suits their style of play.

Just read on another sight that due to blackburn not wanting him on thier books it is unlikley that the move would involve a fee. Why do the words "mercenary bast*rd" spring to mind I was always under the impression that he was here with a vue to a permanent move.

I don't want to see either go, but if they do I am sure suitable replacements will be found.

I also don't really get all the comments about the number of loan players and not planning for the future. Has it occured to anyone that PJ may have tried to sign permanent players over the summer and for whatever reason he couldn't attract the quality he required. His only solution was to therefore fill the gaps by taking loanees until such a time permanent signings could be found i.e. January.

Many on here clearly believe PJ can just pick up the phone and recruit cheap, young, talented players who are desperate to play for ITFC who no other team has spotted.

In the real world this isn't the case and PJ needs to continue his search and I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of permanent signings in the new year followed by some more loans. This combined with youngsters breaking through into the 1st team will mean by the end of the season the team will be about built for next season bar one or two extra signings over the summer.

This highlights the probs with loan players, do well and they get signed by prem, not so good and they are a waste of money and nails in managers coffin!! To those who dont rate Andrews, where would we be without his goals!!

Most threads appear to be along the same lines that Andrews goals have been excellent for a midfilder however his overall game is not that of a Premiership player. Not worth big money imo. Andrews appears to be the mercenary type who will follow the ££££'s which at his age who can blame him. Youth is the way forward . Lets get a hungry midfielder with pace.
Collins I'm afraid will also go in January which is a shame but with our form taking a nosedive who can blame him. Troy Brown would have been good this season a very good athlete with hunger and agression. Unfortunately another mercanary.

Hardly surprising is it? At the end of the day they were only ever here on loan. They have done their job (think where we would be if they hadnt been here) and can move on. Permanent signings in Jan to fill the voids they leave and we move on. Afterall thats all loans are remeber, temporary solutions to a problem. PJ will already have his Jan list ready knowing that these 2 were probably not going to be here.

why dont we wait and see where he ends up before we all start accusing him of being a mercenary...... for all we know there might be a conversation going on now about shipping out leadboots and putting him in as captain....... more cheap paper talk, wait until theres some substance before we decide if hes just another mercenary or not! On another note, pompey might go bust again, then mercenary norris wont be too happy.......

I hope this could be a chance for Hyam to make a push again, we need a midfielder than can win the ball and back the defence up ,whilst breaking up opposition play. Collins and Andrews will be missed but we really should be looking for hungry younger players breaking through.

Do none of you ever think that loan players come in when clubs finalise their squads after the transfer window closes ( leaving loans the only moves ) and gives clubs a chance to try before they buy ? Iknow it is not ideal but it gives clubs a chance to see if everything works without putting a transfer fee at risk , just a loan fee ! We do need to bring through some younger players ( maybe the youngsters are not yet ready to make their mark ) which I am sure will happen in the next window as PJ and his coaching staff will be well aware of what is necessary for us to move on to the next stage of upwards movement ! Think positively and sensibly on our needs and see what happens in Jan before making silly comments re sacking the manager !

Don't build your hopes up on him staying - he has played well, and impressed, in a poorly performing side - not easy to do, but he's done it.
If he stays it will be a bonus, in my opinion he is too good for a team who are, and may well continue to be, in a relegation battle.

My fear is that unless we can put a few more performances together like Saturday against Barnsley, thus reclaiming some credibility - Who are we likely to attract, if anyone, as adequate replacements for both Andrews and possibly Collins ???.

We've enjoyed a bit of a respite result - but our heads are barely above the waterline and the tides still coming in !!.

We MUST build on Saturdays result - imperative that we do.

While we've got experienced midfielders in the like of Bullard, Bowyer and arguably Kennedy it's time to bring in a few younger promising lower league players with some hunger in mould of a Cresswell.

Does this mean Drury will stay? Peters or Hyam will get more of a look in? I'd take anyone over Leadbitter as he's gone backwards since he arrived here.

Andrews is very good at this level and it would be a real shame if we can't do a deal.
If we can get Bullard we can get almost anybody!
Buy Andrews-sell leadbitter and give JB A kick up the ass.
