Reading Keeper on Town Wish List Sunday, 8th Jan 2012 00:58
Town are understood to be interested in taking Reading keeper Alex McCarthy on loan for the remainder of the season. The 22-year-old recently returned from a similar spell at Leeds United.
Manager Paul Jewell has previously said that the Blues are keen on signing an additional glovesman to compete with Arran Lee-Barrett and Richard Wright, former loanee David Stockdale having been recalled by Fulham last month.
Guildford-born 6ft 4in-tall England U21 cap McCarthy came through the Royals’ youth system and has had prior loan spells at Woking, Cambridge United, Team Bath, Aldershot Town, Yeovil Town and Brentford in addition to Leeds.

Agree with bluelady if it frees up cash for the more important areas then fine. But if this transfer window is dominated by more loans then I'm def not happy with it and will begin to worry about the fincial future of our club.

I don't know how good he is, but I hope any loan signing is with a view to a permanent move, with a transfer fee agreed with the club and a confirmation that the player would be willing to move here permanently. No more short term signings please!

I couldn't give a toss if we loaned the maximum number of players as long as they were quality. Rather that than reflex buying a load of cack like that Norwich guy. We need a keeper, three defenders and a decent backup for cressy (not Kennedy). Bullard will come good again now that we desperately need him to be. If we do make quality signings (which seems unlikely at the moment) than forget the loans, but otherwise wait until next year when hopefully our scouts can filter the nuggets of gold from the nuggets of Shi...

Can't we sign someone from lower league who is young and a permanent signing? Fed up with stop gap signing or players nearing the end of their careers, been the problem the last 5 years to many over paid premiership players on loan or to old. That's why we are in the sh*t. No long term plan no rebuilding. Time for young manager with a new chief executive with football experience and a five year plan! Time is running out we are heading for league 1

Another great signing..not!! He's not good enough to get into Reading's team but he is good enough for ITFC. My god this club is on the skids!

Good keeper, but another loan deal... SIGN A PERMANENT KEEPER. If this season should be teaching PJ anything, it should be that quick fixes are not going to take the club forward. What is so hard about going out there and getting a good young keeper with a decent level of experience behind him on a 2-3 year contract? We keep boasting about having all this money. loan fees for Stockdale and potentially this guy could be better invested into getting Ipswich's number 1 for years to come. All we are doing with this is helping a rival club.

Judging by ALB's performance yesterday I would say it's now urgent that we sign a keeper - but I am confused. This week PJ said he made mistakes with bringing in loans - and now we are after another loanee - how on earth is this building for the future - back to square one again in the Summer. When will we learn? PJ said in August that he would sign another keeper because of the recall on Stockdale - in the end he paniced and had to bring in Richard Wright - an injury prone has-been - right up PJ's street! JEWELL OUT

Agree with you Jas0999, thought ALB was poor yesterday and currently would rather see Wrighty in the No1 shirt, but we do need a permanent signing, loans are OK to cover injuries, or where you have the opportunity to take a good young player from a top club. It now seems St Ledger doesn't want to come to Ipswich either, things are looking bleak and Jewell is looking consistently more lost and clueless. I believe we have the players to stay up and I think it's got to be his job to motivate them....just can't see it happening. The club will have to decide, sack him now or hope he can keep us up. One thing for sure is that this season will be a relegation battle!!!

Yet another player on a 'wish list' I wonder how long the list is. I have a wish list with Amazon, trouble is nothing turns up. Thats because every now and then you have to put them into your 'basket' and 'chaeck out'!!! Come on PJ, SC and ME pull your respective fingers out!!!! It won't be long before you start to ask us long suffering fans to renew their season tickets. I think you may be in for a shock.

Guentchev......priskin has had so many chances its untrue. When Jewell came Scotland was left out and dealt with it by buckling down, losing weight and has got back in the team. Priskin sulked and moaned to Hungarian press. He in my opinion has never shown any Passion and we should offload. Bluelady... glad we agree, but u told me off the other week for saying this.

Pretty sure I said exactly the same thing about signing a permanent keeper above that a few minutes before... If I was a footballer though, don't think I would want to move to a club on a downward spiral, and that's how everyone see us right now. Bleak times ahead unless things change. Get Paul Tisdale from Exeter- top young manager

Where doe's Cody Cropper fit into Ipswich's Plans.I know he had a injury but that should not cause him any problems. This kid is a very good keeper although only coming 19 in Febuary.Could handle being put in for town as No1 or No2 keeper no problem. He is USA No1 under 21 keeper. Also will prob be picked for the USA under 23 team to represent the USA in this years olympics Having kept a clean sheet in trials, held in Germany? His contract expires this year with Town?

bluelady - it's all well and good to keep talking about all these Players coming in, loan or otherwise, but the big problem now is getting good players to come here. Who in their right mind would want to ? , this is ITFC 2012 , not of the past. The damage has been done I'm afraid - and far, far more serious than many think, or indeed choose to accept.

......... no one of any note in Football can honestly believe what has 'been allowed' to happen at our beloved PORTMAN ROAD. And am I sad ?? - too bl##dy true I am.

Goalkeeping situation is a major problem sign someone permanent asap - anything is better than ALB. He always starts well in his spell of appearances but is always found out as per yesterday. I would rather have Wright than ALB who as far as I'm concerned is a good number three.
osborne1nil added 13:51 - Jan 8
Can't see another keeper being anywhere near the top priority. Would stick Wright back in goal with ALB and Cropper as seconds. More important that a proper defense is put in place. RB - problem area for years not sorted by Jim, Roy or Paul. 2 new CB. Another striker to support Scotland and Murphy with Chopra off form. Not really confident whoever we get in now (even Messi) that it will make a big difference with the same coaches and Manager in place. A proper Manager could get this team to at least mid table if not higher with some tweaks.

I saw on the Ipswich player a video highlights of Ipswich v Hull 07/08 season, and I did not see any empty seats, so I decided to check up on it. It was May 4th 2008 we won 1-0 and the attendance was 28,233 what a difference between then and today. BY the way we finished 8th in the table 1pt. off the playoffs and a better goal average than the 2 above Magilton was in charge then ????? not my favourite manager BUT WHO IS AT THE MOMENT !!!!!! we need someone who can get a grip on this current slide !!!!! we must not keep thinking of the past must we ???????????????

Bluelady you make a good point however I am getting fed up with the panic band aid solutions that we have been chasing. What is our future plan and strategy? Presumably it includes a re-build and a good place tp start is to get the spine right i.e. permanent, consistent, reliable (including GK). Then another CB and two full backs with the potential of moving Edwards (if he stays) and Cresswell forward. The club should also articulate this mystery plan if they want to get the supporters behind it. We must adopt a proactive rather than reactive mindset.

Good signing if permanent, but cant rely on loans!!!
RRanger added 16:45 - Jan 8
How about targeting the 2 best CBs below the Championship (one left sided, one right sided) and then moving heaven and earth to buy them - preferably both under 28. One and a quarter million each would probably do it and would definitely be building for the future. If that was the only business we did in the transfer window it would be enough for me and the start of the rebuild.
