Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Town Move for Five - Three From Pompey
Thursday, 26th Jan 2012 07:22

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have lodged bids for five players, three understood to be from Portsmouth. The pursuit of Pompey pair Jason Pearce (pictured) and Joel Ward continues, with a third player also now targeted.

Jewell told the club site: “We are looking to improve the team and not just for this season but in seasons going on.

“We have offers in for five players. They are all players, young players, that are at an age that they can help take Ipswich Town on.

“We think the offers we have made are fair ones. Obviously we know the transfer deadline is approaching and we’d like to have some new faces here before the West Ham game but we will have to wait and see what happens.

“Signing a player now, any player, is so complicated — and so frustrating.”

The Blues are continuing to talk to Pompey about Pearce and Ward with the south coast side looking to raise cash to cover their unpaid PAYE bill.

A third Portsmouth player is being targeted with a bid for all three around the £2 million mark having been lodged since the second offer was turned down on Monday.

However, other clubs are also eyeing Portsmouth players and not every member of Michael Appleton's already very stretched squad will be for sale.

One of this morning’s tabloids links Fulham with a £500,000 move for Pompey’s 18-year-old Australian winger Ryan Williams, who would appear to very much fit the profile of the type of player Town are after, while Aston Villa are also claimed to be interested. Keeper Stephen Henderson has also been mentioned as a Newcastle target in recent weeks, while Hungarian striker Márkó Futács is another who could be attracting interest.

The Blues appear to have given up the chase for 17-year-old Powell having had their initial bid turned down, Jewell admitting that one of his proposed deals is “dead”.

Claims of Town interest in Michael Owen and ex-Blue Titus Bramble are somewhat unlikely, while Sheffield United full-back Matt Lowton is not believed to be amongst the five, despite continuing links with the 22-year-old, who was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues back in September.

If Pompey can't find a buyer in good time ahead of the deadline they don't have any option than to accept otherwise they're gambling with the existence of the football club ahead of the hearing late Feb.

Problem will be, if and when they do accept, who else will come in with offers. I think we'll get gasumped after doing all this running.

Good to see we're in for others though! I joked with a mate that I wanted to see a headline on here saying 'Town sign 5' last night. Time will tell....

"We are looking to improve the team and not just for this season but in seasons going on" - shame PJ didn't do this in the Summer.

This sounds like more spin, just to get the fans on side. Bottom line is lodging bids is a long way from getting deals done.

PJ should have been sacked months ago. PJ OUT

At least we are trying but what'll happen this summer?..it'll be another 15-20 players in/out and yet more "rebuilding".

What exactly is our long term plan ,because the nonsense of the amount of players that have come and gone in the last 4 years simply cannot be allowed to carry on.

I hope the third Pompey player is Greg Halford. Good age and a solid right-back who could probably do a job as a centre half too.

Also, acquiring three players from the same side would also have the added benefit of players from the back four having 'pre-gelled', allowing easier integration into a town XI.

Mustn't get too excited yet as it could still all come to nothing, and have to feel a bit sorry for Portsmouth's plight.

COYBs!

Good news that we are making multiple offers. Offers are only offers though.
Wouldn't be shocked to find that 1 of the Pompey players is a high earner (like Nugent etc). Remember, we have room for a new striker (Priskin and Lavery-though he never got a chance in the 1st team-gone). If I was Portsmouth FC,- I would be definately trying to offload 1 of the high earners at the same time. To be honest,- if we somehow ended up with Pearce, Ward and Nugent/Kitson I would be happy. Chopra's game is off this season (he will come back strong next I'm sure) so Scotland badly needs support (don't feel Ellington does this and JET is more like a midfield-attack player).Bring in the lad from Falkirk and we might suddenly have proper competition for places in the squad.
Maybe I am too positive. Someone has to be!
Paul Jewell IN!!!

Sorry but some of you are sriously deluded about our potential to secure players. I doubt we get a single one of the 5 bid for- we're in that bigger hole now.its all too little too late iMO !

Pompey had a winding up petition 3 weeks ago (jan.5th) I believe,, so they are still hanging in there ?????

Same old spin from P-R, come Tuesday we will have no new players then forced to use loan market, a few more old boys will come in on a big wedge for a few weeks holiday in Suffolk and then be off somewhere else.
I hope this does not come true but signs are not good. New signings should have been in place at the start of the transfer window not still trying with a few days to go.
Problem is even if club accepts an offer the players and agents have still to agree terms this all takes time.

PJewellisaGod - with Clegg involved it wouldn't surprise me if the only deal he did manage to agree would be Pompey selling us David Nugent!!!

Moosejuice-Great move if Clegg culd somehow pull that off! They don't call him "Miracle Worker Clegg" for nothing!
Oh, wait...they don't call him that.....

Is it really that wise revealing that all these bids have gone in? If we end up with no one (which we all fear is the probable outcome) it will just cause more animosity towards Clegg and highlight the his (or the clubs) ineptitude to sign any players and failure to take the club forward.

Keep your mouths shut til you've actually done something... you're not helping yourselves!

Moosejuice you are right , all this talk , if we end up with nothing we will become a total laughing stock if we are not already . All we hear is pure speculation lets hope the next bit of news is we have signed so and so , if we get nothing after all this then we must believe Marcus does not back Jewell or Clegg or just does not care ? I continue to support but after 40 plus years this is the lowest i have felt .I fear all this talk will come to nothing and a massive struggle will ensue ,for survival and the club . Time really is running out Jewell has obviously identified the targets it is now up to Clegg and Evans to prove whether or not we really do have ambition . Do it today not tomorrow the deadline is fast approaching sort it out please !!!

Town should get David Sheepshaggers back in to negotiate seeing as he is still connected with the club surely?

I mean he was the mastermind behind the Finidi George Deal afterall !!

But seriously, it would make sense with all his experience of getting deals done.

I've just put a bid in for 5 players on ITFC's behalf.

Alves and Pique from Barcelona, total bid £9.86.
Gomez, Bayern Munich and Cavani from Napoli, total bid £6.32

And to add a bit of age and goal keeping skill I have offered £0.13 to tempt Neville Southall out of retirement.

All bids apart from the one for Neville have been turned down, but I'm still hopefull as the first bid is always turned down.

I've just read on another site that the 3rd player is 32 year old striker Dave Kitson.

Will be going back to Plan A when all we can sign is over 30 loan players?
0

Keaneish added 12:16 - Jan 26
Kitson? No ta.

Wallace, Pearce and Ward...where's the leader with experience to play alongside these with Smith, Ainsley and Cresswell because Sonko and Delaney sure aren't it and with both out of contract I'd like to see a solid, experienced centre back like McManus come in. Failing that maybe St. ledger. Other links would be good!!

5 players?
That's nothing. I regularly used to buy 20 players from the pub vending machine.

Four days that will define our season and the next couple of years, respectable offers.... Yes please! None of these stupid bidding wars, we need to bring in at least two of these targeted players before the conclusion of the window.
