Edwards Agrees New Deal
Edwards Agrees New Deal
Thursday, 15th Mar 2012 06:54

Skipper Carlos Edwards has agreed to sign his new contract with the Blues. TWTD revealed that the 33-year-old had been offered new terms last Thursday.

The new deal will see the Trinidad and Tobago international remain at the club until at least the end of next season, while there is an option for a second year which will be triggered after the midfielder-turned-right-back makes a set number of league appearances.

The summer of 2009 £1.35 million signing from Sunderland is understood to have taken a significant cut in pay from his previous deal with Town looking to reduce their overall wage bill with the Financial Fair Play rules being introduced next season.

Chief executive Simon Clegg says talks have gone well with the ex-Luton and Wrexham man: "We have had good dialogue with Carlos over the last few weeks and I'm delighted to confirm that we have agreed terms with him over a deal for next season."

Meanwhile, Blues boss Paul Jewell was the Town champion at yesterday’s club golf day at Hintlesham. Damien Delaney won the prize for the longest drive.

Amongst the Blues players and coaching staff present and past playing alongside the club's corporate supporters were Tommy Smith, Aaron Cresswell, Daryl Murphy, Lee Bowyer, Alex McCarthy, Chris Hutchings, Sean McCarthy, Andy Liddell, Russell Osman, John Wark, Charlie Woods, Matt Holland, Bryan Hamilton and Geraint Williams.

Shame imo as he loses the ball and doesnt mark tight enough and at 33 its hardly headline stuff, i think the club need a better full back if the massive goals against column is ever going to be sorted.

Agree with blueoff he learns how to defends properly and at 33 is not the long term answer. What 's happened to all the young hungry players PJ keeps on about?

Proving to be a good captain and loyal to the Town. My player of the season, I know he isn't a perfect right back he himself will acknowledge that, however we have had a successful run with him at captain, he always gives 100% and the way he can skill himself past the opposition is great to see. Finishing his playing days at PM would be great.

Village we need a mix of young and old and to be fair at 33 he can still skin many a younger player. Carlos is arguably the fittest guy in the team, age therefor is irrelevant,we haven't offered him a three year deal!!!

Cant mark at corners. More defensive woes instore for next season.

well aswell as all the above i think its a good deal, and dont forget touch wood he never gets injured which in its self is worth alot of money, as you can buy the best player around but if he is always on the treatment table aka kieron dyer and the like, so im glad we have him next year, even if we get a quality right back, i think he is doing ok there, but defo needs to mark tighter though

Bluelady, all good teams are based around a solid defence, sadly careless carlos is a headless chicken when it comes to defending.

Waiting for this news!
I agree with some he's not the youngest but he runs like a 20 year old is settled and loyal to our club with jason pearce (I can only wonder and hope) along beside him next season I think he could play really well. A real livewire down that right hand side. Oh yeah and he can hit a pretty good shot at goal!

Whilst he may not be a natural right back, his performances have improved. With a better shape provided by cover from JET and Tommy Smith, he looks less flustered. As captain he has galvanised the team - we're recovering from poor positions now. Yes, we will need strengthening at the back, but I'm glad Carlos is staying.

Agree with Blue Lady. Another good development concerning all-important continuity for our 'work in progress' side, as he will have much to offer in what may be his last season or two in football. He is a committed player that has been excellent for the team in the last 6 months and as new blood is introduced, it will be good to have his experience around.

I say, power to his elbow. Although it sounds as though he has been offered significantly less rewarding than his last contract, he has been offered a contract and has said yes, none of this pratting around to see if any club wants to up it. For me, shows he is with us because he wants to be - means a lot.

I think he's had a better season than cresswell . But because cresswell is young people don't see it.

I thought cresswell was supposed to be a dead ball specialist?

Blue lady...some very good points, Blueoff... yes he can be a headless chicken, and good teams are built on good defences. but his attitude has been spot on, so to suggest he is careless, imo is wrong. He cares a lot...he is not a natural right back as we all know, and i dont think this means the search for a right back is over at all. No need for negativity on this story. He has taken a massive pay cut to stay....

That was quick, and it is pleasing to see an ITFC player decide to sign a contract promply rather than dragging it on and on a la Carson and Leadbitter. I like Carlos's attitude and he is proving to be a good captain I think.

I like car-less Carlos. Despite his off the field problems and the massively over-done criticism of his play at RB, he's a committed athlete and many people's player of the season. Well done Carlos. Good news.

Diss spot on :-) anyone who moans about his age clearly has not seen him play, look at Kevin Philips for goodness sake! Agree with comments earlier about Creswell too, I'm afraid recently I haven't been overwhelmed by him.

The good news about this is that in the summer we won't be losing many players! If jewell now sorts out tommy smith contract, we will be in a far better position this summer than we were last summer!

Quite simply how any of you can slag of Carlos is beyond me. Had a turbulent season off the pitch (some his own doing, some not) And yet he's remained professional on the pitch and is quite possibly our player of the season. Came out and said he'd take a paycut to remain here because he and his family are settled in Suffolk. Commitment, isn't that what 99% of you are always moaning about?

He may not be a natural right back but he's certainly not the worst in the league! Works hard and he has put some fantastic match/point saving last ditch challenges in and yes he's also shipped a few goals for us too. But by the by. Good to see he's still on board.

Lots of post about Henderson Ward and Pearce coming to the club and how we need them, Yet as reported they wanted 3 time their salary to come here so must be looking at 25 to 30k a week,

They are more intrested in money than the club yet Edwards takes a pay cut gives 100% week in week out and people moan about him.

Looks like we have next season player to pick on once Leadbitter leaves

Mick_Mills_Tache added 08:33 - Mar 15
And as for Cresswell.....it's easier for him to stand out in a team of underperformers (aka-start of the season) whereas now the team is playing as a unit, he doesn't stick out as much.

TownOnTheUp added 08:34 - Mar 15
Good news... if we get a new, first choice, right back. Edwards, for all his good work, has got the potential to be a liability, as I've seen this season and last, even if he's more consistent now. As a winger, however, I think we can all see his qualities and hopefully he'll keep a place in the team next season, just further forward.

I don't understand some people. Moaning because we don't sign players who are loyal and want to wear the shirt, then when we do, they still moan. I'm sure some would come on here moaning about not having anything to moan about.

At least we have secured the services of a right back. What would be the point of letting him go and getting someone else in? We would still have no cover in that position. Now we can get a younger, hungrier player and have competition for the position.

A good piece of work by Clegg and PJ!
