Jewell: We Deserved Victory Saturday, 17th Mar 2012 17:57
Town boss Paul Jewell thought his side just about deserved their 3-2 home victory over Peterborough, despite the visitors having had the better of the first half.
Jewell said: “It was an entertaining game with both sides knowing what their strengths are, which is going forward and trying to score more than the opposition.
“I watched the tape of their Blackpool game yesterday and it could have been three-all after 10 minutes there was so much really good attacking play, it was so open.
“Yes, [it was like a basketball match early on] - we attacked, they attacked. I thought in the first half they were the better team, they shaded it.
“Even though we had some really good chances, so did they. But in the second half I thought we were the better team.
“We were hanging on in the final moments there and showed great character to come back from them equalising. We would definitely have lost that not so long ago.”
The Blues boss admits he’s rather too used to high scoring games involving his team: “There aren’t many games where we play out a comfortable 1-0 out here. We know that we need to tighten up defensively all over as a team, we’ve known that all season.
“But what we have got at the moment is goals, we’re creating chances. JET didn’t have a great game today, it wasn’t his day today, and he’s been a major part of our attacking force, but we still got three goals.”
Jewell says he switched his system around to counteract Peterborough’s midfield: “We changed our shape to match them up because they were causing us a few problems.
“JET wasn’t having the best game and so we matched them up in the middle of the park. You can say it worked, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I think it’s important that we scored two goals from set plays because they are vitally important.”
Michael Chopra had a few opportunities but failed to get on the scoresheet but his manager wasn’t too disappointed with his display: “I’d rather he missed them than not have the chance. He’s hit the bar, he’s hit one over the bar, he probably hit that too well.
"He could have scored two headers in the first half, although I know Tommy Rowe could have as well.
“I was just looking at the stats. They had 20 shots and we’ve had 14 or 15, so it must have been good for you guys.
“I think we deserved to win. Darren will have his thoughts on that, but I think what we did show was character.
“We were 1-0 up, they equalised, their first goal was a bit fortunate, then 2-1, then they scored again and then we’ve come back again.
“We had a little bit of fortune with the goal, there’s no doubt about that, but when we played down their place in the 7-1 game at least two of their goals were offside and I didn’t come in moaning and groaning about that.”
Jewell, who joked that Aaron Cresswell’s winner should go down as an own goal, says the left-back is suffering with a slight groin problem and Tommy Smith took a bit of a knock towards the end.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson thought his team deserved something from the match: “We were certainly unlucky. We just didn’t score when we had control of the game. Before they scored their first we could have had two or three. I’d have to watch it again but I don’t think it was a game we deserved to lose.”

A hard fought victory in an entertaining game! Six months ago we'd have lost this... Still issues with defensive naivety and JET and Drury were a little off-colour but definite progression, bring on Burnley!

Well I suppose that it's an easier task to fix the defensive aspect of our game rather than fix the an inability to create and then score from chances. Certainly the spirit is now there so PJ and staff have lots to build on and should know what to work on before next season. Of interest most of Peterborough's players are from the lower leagues.

Another welcome 3 points but think Posh were a tad unfortunate to go away with nothing. Of course I'm delighted we won but there is much work to be done in the summer at the back. None of our goalkeepers inspire confidence with today no different and Delaney and Smith were very wobbly today. Credit to Peterborough though, they punch way above their weight and are entertaining to watch. Leadbitter was the pick of a tired looking midfield but my man of the match was Edwards who covered so much ground up and down the right flank. Look forward to Burnley now and to breaking the Watford hoodoo.

Not a bad thing when you can grind out a result when not playing at your best good signs

That's the last we will see of Drury : he will be consigned to the reserves (if we had a team ...) with Hyam from now on, as Jewell does not rate either of them above his preferred lumps of Stodge in midfield.

Daley ever thought of joining the Muppets?

Yep finally nice to see us show some sort of backbone in the last couple of games (if you can say that about this end to end game with Peterboro). Probably earlier in the season displays we would have only picked up maybe 1 point in the last two games, so some improvement. Still I feel we still need a GK, RB and another CB which STILL needs to be sorted!

Another welcome three points and a good battle. However, still another two goals conceded, at home and against one of the lesser sides (I shudder to think what Premiership forwards would do to this defence). Is George Graham available for a spot of defensive coaching consultancy? As Daleyitfc says, it is probably now the end for Drury so that we can go back to that wonderful midfield combination of Leadbitter and Bowyer.

Tracotbeezer - good point, I would rather we took a punt on a few players from lower leagues than money grabbers from Portsmouth for example. They may not be immediately ready for the 1st team but much more satisfaction watching players grow and give 100% .

Peterborough looked really good today and there were several below-par Town performances, but credit to the attacking Ipswich side for managing to go ahead three times in the match. Leadbitter really made things happen in midfield, so credit to him today especially, and well done to Cresswell for the winning goal. I hope the fans enjoyed the 3-2. We need to capitalise on the feelgood factor by getting as many new people to Portman Road as possible. There is a real opportunity with the ticket promotions in the next three games, especially the £7.50 Barnsley match, so please encourage friends and family to come along to witness the Paul Jewell revolution. :-)

Did we deserve to win? No. Was it great to see us battle and not give up. Yes. Does someone need to remind Delaney that he's not John Terry? Absolutely? DaleyITFC - can you get a refund on those positive thinking lessons?

When we have to score 2.3 goals to win a game call me old fashion but who ever is coaching the defensive position it ain't working.

A 3-2 win which I predicted, can't believe people are on here moaning, so what if we were fortunate. The history books will record a win to us. We all know what positions need strengthening just enjoy the fact we are scoring late goals instead of collapsing. I always enjoy Saturday evening better after a win.....coyb

@dissboyitfc - agree, before xmas we would have only got maybe a point from the last 2 games, it shows we have hopefully now have a stronger resolve. 2 games that we haven't particularly played well in and 4 points, also makes me feel better on a sat evening. Lets hope we can beat Burnley and edge up that table further!

Agree with most we probably didn't deserve the 3 points but the amount of games 'we deserved to win and didn't ' it was nice to us be on the other end of it! I was sitting in south stand what did no. 11 do to wind up the sir bobby robson stand- as it was hard to see?! :) Thanks

For me today was a typical championship game and great value. Goals, good passing and movement and lots of mistakes. Draw a fair result but like others have stated we got a result when we would have got nothing 3-4 months back. It was also a game in which PJ would have learned a lot both positive and negative. The biggest disappointment was the Swedish crew having weak shots at half time lol. Sindre was that you?

Peterboro' - perfect example that players are available, and can be sourced from lower leagues - AND be adequately up to the task of the Championship. Wish you well.

FFS People, we lose, people moan (fair enough) we draw, people moan (maybe a bit harsh) but we win and guess what??? OK, so it wasn't our best performance, but points win prizes people, not slick, polished performances. What is wrong with these so called fans??? I can't take the negativety anymore, and I always say that people are entitled to their opinions, but these people (daley included) are clearly so depressing I'm glad this is just an online forum and not 'down the pub' or I may not be held accountable for my actions........

Diss and Bury great posts... one loss in nine games, that'll do me for now. Today was never going to be pretty, tremendous amount of pressue to redeem ourselves. Peteborough love to attack too and credit to them for coming at us today, but finally we have found some balls and are becoming very hard to beat!
