Cresswell: Definitely My Goal
Cresswell: Definitely My Goal
Monday, 19th Mar 2012 09:35

Left-back Aaron Cresswell was in no doubt that Town's winning goal during Saturday's 3-2 victory over Peterborough was his despite it deflecting off Posh defender Gabriel Zakuani. The ex-Tranmere man’s first goal for the Blues sealed the win in the 85th minute.

After the game manager Paul Jewell laughed that it was an own goal but Cresswell says it will definitely go down as his: “It was going top corner. It did take a deflection but it was on target so it is my goal.

"It is nice to score but it was not just about me it was about the team performance and we got that.”

The 22-year-old, who says he hasn’t given up on the play-offs even if Town are still very much outsiders for a top six place, was pleased to lay to rest the ghost of the 7-1 thrashing at London Road in August: “When we went there and got beat seven it was one to forget for everyone so to beat them 3-2 was good for everyone.

“We couldn't go into the game dwelling on the seven goals as we didn’t want any negatives and we stayed positive.

“It was good to put that to rest and it was important to move on from that. It was one of those games where it was up and down but we deserved the points.”

He says Saturday’s match, in which the visitors had the better of the first half, was one the Blues probably wouldn’t have taken points from not so long ago: “We would have lost that game three months ago when would go under the cosh and then lose the game.

“Now we have that never say die attitude and that is something the gaffer said we needed all season but never had. Now we seem to have turned the corner and now have that attitude.

“We have come on a long way from three months ago when we could not keep a clean sheet or score goals and lost six on the bounce. We have turned the corner. We are a lot stronger as a team, we have better shape."

Manager Paul Jewell highlighted midfielder Grant Leadbitter as his side’s key man against Posh: “Grant was excellent. I thought he was very good. I thought he was our best player.”

Asked whether there are plans for immediate contract discussions with the 26-year-old, whose current terms are up in June, he joked that given his recent performances the Blues might be best off keeping things as they are for the moment: “By the looks of it we’re better off not!”

Meanwhile, Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez is a doubt ahead of Wednesday's game against Town at Portman Road due to a groin injury. Rodriguez, a Blues target in the summer, missed Sunday's goalless draw at Cardiff.

To be honest he took the shot "at goal" but from my angle in the ground I'm not so sure of it heading into the top corner.
He does deserve it for the fact he was willing to take on the shot.
He has had a great season and has been one of our best players this year.
Cresswell for fans player of the year??? Watch this space.

Well done Aaron for 'scoring' the winner. If you don't buy a ticket etc etc.....but seriously that was going nowehere near the goal let alone the top corner....top corner of the Sir Bobby Upper would be more believable.

Don't give a monkeys where it was going, it ended up in the back of the net, no discussion needed.

From my angle from the Sir Bob it looked like it was going in, but the keeper looked like he probably would have had it covered though . . . . . . . . . . . . .. .. . . . . . . one aaron, two aaron, three aaron creswell. four aaron, five aaron, six aaron cresswell. seven aaron, eight aaron, nine aaron cresswell. oooooh aaron cresswell

It matters not whether it would have gone in or nor, what matters young Aaron is that YOU kicked it and because you did, we got three points and Peterborough none, it was a great strike and YES YOU scored a great goal which made us supporters go home very happy indeed, thank you for that.

Great for him.
for me he's been our best player this year, consistant throughout, endless goal line clearences at the south stand end,

He's received some bizarre criticism recently. Very good defensively and has added a fair number of assists plus now a goal for himself. Will probably get my vote.

Sorry, not POTY material.

Lot of plus points - young, hungry, full of energy and improving and personally happy we have players like that in the team but in truth he's currently as much of a liability at the back as any of the defence and can't cross for toffee.

Similar players in every position and you would be watching a reasonable championship reserve side.

As for POTY it's tough this year. No-one has been than consistent. Probably Martin for me.

Vexorg you couldn't be more wrong, what a bizarre comment. Can't cross for toffee??

Was going miles wide! Delighted with the win, particularly as second best for much of the match. But this was an OG!

However, pleased to see Cresswell picking up some form as despite an excellent start he has certainly dipped a bit.

Cressy POTY? Are you mad? He's been cr*p this year, fails to close people down before it's too late and as for his crossing...

POTY has to go to either Lee Martin or Tommy Smith

At what point does a deflection become an own goal.

AlaMahon I'm going to have to ask you, are YOU mad? Tommy Smith? For what, 6, maybe 7 good games?

Funny you say Cresswell doesn't close down before its too late, that's because its naturally more notable as most times that's happened its resulted is a goal. But the numerous times he does close down, stops crosses coming in and clears the ball go unnoticed because he's just doing his job. But, generally, Cresswell's done his job excellently this season, plus he should get extra praise with this being his first experience of this division.
