Edwards the Confessor

Skipper Carlos Edwards is refusing to concede defeat in his bid to lead Ipswich into the play-offs.

He admits Saturday’s loss at Watford, only their second in 11 games, could prove costly but remains upbeat about their chances of a top-six finish.

Edwards, 33, said: “We are obviously thinking positively and while it is a setback — a kick in the face really — after the run we have been on I don’t think it is the end of the road.

“We still have a lot to play for and as everyone knows anything can happen in football. As long as we don’t get too carried away with looking at the play-offs, and not concentrating on getting the points, we can still do it.

“It is in the back of our minds but we just want to go out there, week in and week out, trying to gain the three points in any way possible.”

Edwards recalled the 2-1 defeat at Vicarage Road, when the Hornets trailed at the interval to Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s goal, and added: “We are not making excuses.

“The pitch wasn’t the best but both teams had to play on it and they did a better job. Our mistakes cost us. It has been one of those seasons when the mistakes — silly mistakes — we have made have been costing us.

“But it isn’t going to help looking back. It is what it is. We just have to concentrate on the eight games we have left and try to win as many as possible.”

However, Edwards did own up to his role in Town’s downfall at the weekend, coming up short with his attempted back-pass that enabled Troy Deeney to clinch victory for the home side with just seven minutes left.

An Ipswich victory, which seemed on the cards at the break after an impressive first-half show from Paul Jewell’s men, would have put them within six points of the play-offs and with two home games against Middlesbrough and Barnsley to come this week.

Edwards confessed: “I do have my ups and downs and on Saturday I had one of those moments. We all make mistakes but I did apologise to the lads.”

could have apologised to the fans as well

Very few of the players acknowledged the 1700 travelling fans after the game.

They need to learn to acknowledge the away supporters when they lose, they are more than happy to dance around in front of the fans when they win!!

More stupid play off talk, the table does not lie and we are about where we deserve to be, we will finish somewhere between 12-16th, 60-63 points.

tractoyboy.... would rather the players still had the dream so we get some decent peformances rather than just sitting back and accepting mid table, i pay for more than that im afraid. Carlos would be slated if he came out and said, well after saturday we know we can onlhy reach 12 - 16. cant win!

I'm pleased the players are still aiming high.

Shame they can't defend.

Fair play to him for owning up to his mistake. But that pitch is a disaster. So i forgive u carlos. Also i think even if playoffs would be a miracle at least the players still believe they have a chance,if so we might get some good results. So lets support the lads & hope for better things next season. Imo the future of itfc is bright.

As much Chopra's fault as Carlos'. What a miss.

Be careful what you wish for people...'give the youngsters a game' I hear people cry. If we do that we could, while blooding good young players, have a disappointing end to the season which is the opposite of what we want. Play the strongest team.

I too thought there was little appreciation of the fans on Saturday after the final whistle.

flyingdutchman... not just Carlos. if Chopra had done his job and stuck the ball in the net when he had golden chance things would have been differant. he did make a mistake no doubting that but sadly been made a scapegoat by many. he isnt a RB, he knows that but he is doing is best in the position he is being asked to play in.

Carlos has a bit of class - and not just on the pitch. He also admits to his mistakes. Everyone makes a mistake now and then. It's what you do the rest of the time that counts. Like Blue lady, I too am a fan of Carlos.

The punters on here usually praise the hack for the title when he makes a pun. Not this time, so far.... Perhaps nobody knows who Edward the Confessor was.

For anyone who doesn't know, Edward the Confessor, or 'Steady Eddie', as he was known, was in charge of the England team a few years ago now. Steady Eddie didn't do much and was eventually replaced by a new English supremo called Harold. He was even worse than Steady. He only lasted one match, a home fixture against the French. The English defence fell apart and the away team won comfortably. One in the eye for the French, there. At that point, the English FA went for a foreign coach.

Madness - we don't deserve it. Worst defence in the league.

If we would of beaten Watford we would have a chance. Going to be very difficult to make the play-offs. Win tomorrow night then there is still a very very slim chance. We don't deserve to be there yet, but let's push on and finish as high as possible and try and retain season ticket holders once more and hope next season will be better because at the end of the day it has to be. More pressure on PJ and the players to step up to the plate next season.

I think they're told to make these statements in order to try and get more bums on seats, personally cannot see us winning 8 straight games and that also depends on how other teams fare...most probable another quick end to the season with nothing to play for.

Garv added 21:40 - Mar 26
You get what you deserve. Right now we deserve to be where we are. If we won every game for the rest of the season, we would probably be in the playoffs and would deserve to be there.

You can have the worse defence in the league but if you score even more then you'll deserve to be however high up the league you are.
