Magilton Leaves Melbourne
Magilton Leaves Melbourne
Sunday, 1st Apr 2012 10:28

Former Blues boss and skipper Jim Magilton has parted company with Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory. The Northern Irishman took on the job of interim coach in January but after winning twice, drawing five and losing five his side finished eighth in the table, well away from the play-offs.

The 42-year-old is understood to have been keen to extend his spell with Melbourne but after being informed that other candidates were also on the short-list for the role longer term he decided to move on.

Magilton said: “On behalf of [assistant] Chris [O’Loughlin] and myself, I’d like to thank everyone at Melbourne Victory for the opportunity that was presented to us.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and wish the club every success in the future.”

Victory managing director Richard Wilson added: “Jim arrived at the shortest of notice, on a leap of faith, stepping into a role that he had limited background on.

“We realise that we didn’t ultimately reach the finals this season, which was our goal, but we also believe Jim was unlucky not to have finished with a better record, given we conceded goals in the dying stages of games against Sydney and Gold Coast.

“He was a total professional throughout the three months he was here. His preparation week-to-week was exceptional, his team selection saw the integration of several youngsters and was always in the best interests of the club.

“He also re-shaped a number of processes in the football department with the support of his assistant Chris O’Loughlin, who he brought with him, which will hold us in very good stead as we take our next steps forward.

“In summary, he left no stone unturned, tackled every issue head-on and he will only be remembered in a positive way from everyone involved in Melbourne Victory. We certainly wish Jim and Chris well in their future coaching endeavours.”

I rate JM and thought he was unlucky to lose his job just after beating the Budgies 3-1....we haven't finished as high in the league since he left. Good luck Jim!

Jim was hounded out by certain sections of the football media here who hate British managers, he should have learned from Butcher who found out the same thing a few yrs ago

You're too good to be managing in Australia anyway Jim..they only gave him 12 games!

Still love to see him back here one day.

Best of luck Jim.

I love the way he's sacked with a list of reasons why not to sack him.

he was hired until the end of the season with no pre-agreement of a permanent deal.

They needed someone to tide them over until a proper search for a replacment could be completed.

He wasnt sacked.

... yep, it's a case of be careful what you wish for. Jim no worse than Roy - possibly better and I rate him much higher than Paul Jewell - who will year on year deliver mid-table. That will please some ... but not me!

Further evidence of Magilton's lack of managerial expertise. It is true that the 2 that have followed him have been no better, but that's not a reason why we should have kept him : simply a reason why we need to get someone with a brain in his head, unlike the last 3.

Simply put not a very good manager and had his chance both here and QPR and failed, not surprised he has'nt found success elsewhere.

without doubt better than Jewell and Keane...perhaps the problem is since his management the money or availability of money to spend which this club has never executed very well, he worked on a budget and did pretty well in all honesty.

I figure that people who play with passion for the club (let alone score hat-tricks to take us to Wembley play off finals) should get some respect on this site!

i think Jim talks a better game then he delivers as a manager..... maybe longer term he might come good, i think he needs to go down to a league 2 type outfit and work his way up, he might get the time he needs then to build something...... he was a top captain, that usually means a decent manager given the time....... or a good pundit i guess failing that!

I feel sorry for him, was a great player for us and could pass better than many since. As for managing havent checked but sure we have finished lower since he left and let be honest the standard of football has not advanced. Maybee he should have been given a little more time. RC was a financiall and footballing disaster waiting to happen and did. PJ is begining to get there but with the backing of money spent would Jim have taken us on further?
