Town Face Battle for Keeper Kuszczak
Town Face Battle for Keeper Kuszczak
Tuesday, 1st May 2012 12:35

Town face stiff opposition for Tomasz Kuszczak’s signature with Spurs, QPR, Fulham, Werder Bremen and even Bayern Munich all reported to also be showing interest in the out-of-contract Manchester United keeper.

The 30-year-old Pole, who ended the season on loan at Watford, is understood to be top of Paul Jewell’s summer wish list as he looks to add a permanent number one to his squad ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

At most of those clubs Kuszczak would be the second-choice, as he has been throughout his time at Old Trafford, and the former West Brom man says he wants to play more regularly at this stage of his career: "I have decided to move [from Manchester United] and be a first-choice keeper. I do not want to be a replacement any longer.

"My family like England as much as me," he added. "I think that I know the style of play and I have made my name here. But I have serious options in Germany to consider as well. My agent is working on a possible move to the Bundesliga."

Kuszczak also revealed that he had chances to moved to Aston Villa or rejoin the Baggies last summer.

Birmingham’s Colin Doyle has also been linked with the Blues but was not the keeper Jewell met for talks last Thursday.

Meanwhile, Doncaster midfielder James Coppinger has conceded that he may move on from the relegated Rovers this summer and wouldn’t be averse to relocating to Suffolk if Town renewed last year’s interest: “I think Ipswich is a great club. I have some friends who have played at Ipswich in the past and they speak highly of the club and the place.

“With them being in the Championship and an ambitious club, it is always somewhere you would look to go.”

However, speaking after Saturday’s game, Blues boss Paul Jewell played down the likelihood of Town doing a deal for the 31-year-old, having previously said he’d speak to Rovers manager Dean Saunders about the former Exeter man: “I don’t think so. We’d like good players, he’s a good player, Coppinger, but I don’t think so.”

Elsewhere, former Blues coach and assistant manager John Gorman has decided to retire at the end of the season. Gorman, 62, worked under George Burley and then had a second spell at the club during Jim Magilton’s time in charge. The Scot is currently assisting Karl Robinson at MK Dons.

As usual, lots of negativity on here.

To all the people who say he's overrated etc - why would all these other high calibre clubs be interested then?

And to those who write us off because of the competition - read the bit snout wanting first team football (which we can offer).

Not looking forward to all you whingers after every rumour that appears.

If he wants to play football he will come to us, he wont get regular football at any of the other clubs, they all have International (or retired international) class keepers as their number one's and even as back-up. Tomasz hasn't really featured that much for Poland so I don't think he's up to knocking any keepers out of their number one spots at that list of clubs.
However, I'm sure Bayern could outpay the lot of them where he'd end up third choice (as he would at most of the other clubs as well) and he'd probably earn at least three times as much at most of the other clubs to not even make the bench.
I'm sure he's good enough to be a regular for a Championship club and if he has ambition to play over earning money he'll come to us, having said that if someone offered us, the average person £20k to manage their small business, or some huge multinational came along and said you can't be number one, but you can be second or third assistant and we'll pay you £60k, what would you do? I know what I'd do.

PJ proves daily why he is the wrong manager at the wrong club. He can't sign the players he wants because he can't come to terms with his situation.

There are loads of players out here who would be only too pleased to get the opportunity to play for Ipswich. The difficult job is picking the good ones.

PJ hasn't got the vision, he's stuck in his Prem days of 5 years ago.

Plan B it is then!

Still not convinced about Coppinger - still think we should look for a younger player - we still have several over the age of 30.

Is that not just Gareth McAuley with a keepers top on?

I believe that it was always going to be Joe Lewis as our new number 1. Now that he's been released by Peterborough it' almost a nailed on certainty.

Some say........(and all that, couldn't think of anything and meant to be working anyway)all we know is he's Gareth McAuley's Polish cousin.

Oh well that's that then!
Contracts on offer at ITFC, I think it would have been curtains even if it was the likes of Orient, Colchester and Southend in for his signature.

has to be Lewis surely, a quality keeper, championship experience, used to being a number 1, and avaliable on a free, its no brainer !!! Only released due to a fall out with fergie jr.

Depends whether he wants first team football or premier league wages. If he wants football ITFC would be a good choice (god knows he will get plenty of action). If it's wages he will be off to Germany.
Better choice than Loach or Lewis in my opinion - not seen enough of Guzan to comment.

Urchin, you say you'd prefer Loach, but Kuszczak was recruited by Watford in preference to Scott Loach and what I can make out from some Watford fans is that they don't rate Loach, much the same as many of us don't rate ALB.

Jewell............

“I don't think so. We'd like good players, he's a good player, Coppinger, but I don't think so.”

What kind of statement is that?.
