Lawrence in Squad for Holland Tour
Lawrence in Squad for Holland Tour
Saturday, 14th Jul 2012 09:53

Town boss Paul Jewell has included academy first-year scholar Byron Lawrence in the squad for this week’s two-game tour of Holland. However, there is no place for either Nathan Ellington or Jaime Peters in the party which travels tomorrow.

Lawrence’s inclusion seemed likely after he was left out of the U18s squad for today’s friendly at Kirkley and Pakefield. The 16-year-old made his first-team debut as a sub at Doncaster on the final day of last season.

At the end of last campaign, Blues boss Paul Jewell said Ellington and Peters could move on over the summer if clubs wanted them and talks regarding their futures are believed to have taken place with their agents. Both have a year remaining on their contracts.

New signing Elliott Hewitt travels despite being out of action until the September at the earliest having undergone hip surgery while with Macclesfield, although he is now doing some light running.

Town’s other new addition, central defender Luke Chambers, will make his first appearances in a blue shirt at Helmond Sport on Tuesday and Den Bosch on Thursday (both 7pm local time).

Tommy Smith, who has been suffering with a minor hamstring injury, is absent as he's due to meet up with the New Zealand Olympic squad.

Also missing is prospective new signing Cheick Kourouma who can't officially join the Blues until agreements are in place with his former clubs Sochaux, Real Zaragoza and Genoa regarding training and development compensation which could potentially be due as the midfielder is under 23 years of age.

The Italian club are the hold-up with the English and Italian FAs involved and the player himself having contacted his old club in order to get the paperwork sorted so he can put pen to paper.

Jewell is also taking a look at a couple of trialists while the squad is at their five-day training camp near Eindhoven.

Squad: Ainsley, Bullard, Carson, Chambers, Chopra, Cresswell, Delaney, Drury, Edwards, Emmanuel-Thomas, Hewitt, Hyam, Lawrence, Lee-Barrett, Martin, Murray, Scotland, Stevenson, Whight.

For me, Peters was ruined from the moment he was put at full back, by Keane I believe. He was always relatively dangerous running at defenders, not having wingers running at him and trying to defend! He was never a defender.

Not particularly gifted technically but the effort he put in counted for a lot.

Really sad that it never worked out really. I remember when him and Gio tore Norwich apart at home under Jim.

I was a big fan of peters until I saw him play against Northampton in our 2-1 loss. He couldn't pass or keep possession and was in a word awful. Hopefully he can move on and get regular football elsewhere.

What absolute nonsense orwell12345, I say why spend money when we have a player like Jaime Peters

Peters is most certainly not the worst player we have had, but IMO ,he isn't good enough either.
At the risk of incurring the wrath of h32 I agree with garv, he isn't a defender.
He is a league 1/2 midfielder.
We all like him cos he gives 100% and has had some good games for us, unfortunately I think the Northampton game sealed his fate.
Hope he can get another club, but he certainly isn't the future of ITFC.

Well done Byron, a great achievement to be mixing with the seniors at 16!

as for Peters, he had great potential when we signed him a few years ago but unfortunately he diddnt improve as he/we would have liked. Maybe a a full season in a first team in League 1/2 will bring the best out of him.
He has great pace and puts in a good shift. Never really looked comfortable at this level, maybe a lack of confidence.
I hope he gets a team where he can play regularily. Would be intresting to see how he gets on! Wish him all the best

I find it bizarre that Peters is written off on the basis of the Northampton game, when absolutely everyone was abysmal. Go back to his previous appearance in that competition and Phil's match report describes him as "again excellent at right-back". That was against Arsenal.

Personally, I remember the Norwich game Garv mentions above. Having not played the whole season, he came on out of position at left back (to replace Ben Thatcher - now there's a candidate for worst ever player) and was just brilliant.

He clearly hasn't impressed Jewell - fair enough and it's best for all if he moves on. But let's not forget the very decent contributions he has made from time to time.

Not sure what has gone wrong with Peters he did put in some really good displays but also been poor sometimes. I think perhaps he's a bit too laid back for PJ and maybe needs to play regularly and he's not likely to do so with us, so time to move on.

itfcjay Spot on. I saw that match too. It was a chance for Jamie and he didn't show up. He hasn't featured since.

Interesting that no other club has come in for him, so he can't be rated elsewhere either. Perhaps he is happy to keep taking the money and see out his contract, before having to face up to the fact that his next job won't pay anything like his current one.

From memory I can probably name 20 players worse than Jaime and I like a lot of them; I'll start with current players, ( and this is how they've performed for Ipswich) 1:ellington, 2:ALB, 3:Sonko (now past players) 4: Andy Marshall, 5: le pen, 6: Fish, 7: Finidi (after the first two games), 8: Santos, 9: Bart Williams, 10:diallo, 11:Parkin, 12:ulenbeek, 13:croft, 14:chapman, 15:campo 16: proudlock, 17:Healy, 18:Paz, 19:balkestein and 20:(and I can't believe we ever signed such an utter c@@7) Ben Thatcher.

Geriant williams as well .The part played hundreds of games for us and scored one goal. Peters was much more consistant and I still feel he was not given a fair shot despite 99 games. How many were in a winning side in his favoured most confident position?

Going on a pre-season tour without any goalkeepers sound just about perfect!
Anyone knows what happened to Conor O'Donnell? Trial with WBA, and then what?

Have to agree Jas0999!

Plenty more work for PJ to do in the market as what we have to date isn't good enough in certain areas to mount a good challenge. Chambers is a great signing, that apart, i'm very underwhelmed at the moment, even with some of the links and time is ticking...

With Peters and Ellington potentially on there way, competition is looking quite scarce in some areas too.

Still time though...

Hopefully the liks of Hyam and Lawrence will be regulars on the bench this season now we have 7 subs.

Ellington was free and we still paid too much for him!

well done mate..
and for peters , hes never been good enough, im fine with him leaving

bigolconnor added 20:26 - Jul 14
Sindre you are wrong. Peters has played exceptionally well in two situations. Firstly when he played along with Darren Bent and secondly when we had Gio. He has a touch of class and flare that is only apparent when he has a flarish wingman.

At least ALB knows that he will play two games out of two ... unless Mr Jewell decides to play Bryon in goal!

I would have liked to have seen Jaimie Peters being given more of a chance under PJ. I think he was dropped at a time when he was starting to get into games. He always put in maximum effort and I feel a bit sorry he's going.

Just have to hope one of the trialists-or both-is a keeper

Interesting the split on Peters, whilst he had a few good games never really good enough at this level and his control often lets him down. We have plenty of better options on the wing so hopefully he can get a club more suited to his ability in the lower leagues.
