Tottenham Midfielder Luongo Set for Town Loan Saturday, 21st Jul 2012 22:12
Town are expected to confirm the season-long loan signing of Tottenham midfielder Massimo Luongo early this week. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were targeting the 19-year-old Australian earlier this month.
Sydney-born Luongo joined Spurs in January 2011 after impressing while on trial, having previously played for APIA Leichhardt Tigers in his homeland.
He made nine appearances for their U18s in the 2010/11 season, scoring three goals from central midfield, including one in a final day 2-1 defeat of the Blues.
By the beginning of last season he had impressed enough to make his senior debut — and miss the decisive spotkick in a shoot-out — as a 71st minute sub in a Carling Cup tie with Stoke. That remains his only first team appearance.
Capped twice by Australia at U20 level and called into senior training camps, 5ft 9½in tall Luongo also qualifies to play for Italy, the nation of his father's birth, and Indonesia, where his mother was born.
Luongo is currently with the Tottenham development squad which is playing a friendly against Italian side Calcio Como tonight but yesterday tweeted to a friend: "Looks like I'm heading for a loan."

You lot crease me up. None of you have seen him play. This kid obviously comes here on the nod of Klug, and if he's good enough for him he's good enough for me. Give the poor sod a chance - he isn't even here yet and he's faced with a barrage of negativity. Hang your heads people

I haven't heard this much bleeting since the time my car broke down next to a field of sheep during lambing season! "What's the point of loans, we're just developing other peoples players"....."let's develop our own youngsters, we don't want this loan"......"he's only played one senior game for spurs, how's he going to be good enough" Every club in the land routinely loan players when they are needed, premier league clubs included. Developing other clubs players? Yes........what the fook do you think we are doing when we loan a load of our promising young kids out to other clubs? That's right, they are not going to hold down a regular first team spot for us, but have talent and could do in the future, so they are loaned out and gain experience and regular football. At the same time they are providing valuable input to the club they're loaned to. Why don't we play our own youngsters? We do, but many of them are simply not capable of holding down a first team spot yet, but a squad player for a premier league team is likely to be a better player than somebody sitting in our academy and could well drop straight into the first team match squad, especially when they are clearly highly rated by all concerned (as have been some of our previous loans from spurs that went on to play many first team games for them). We clearly have a tight budget and loans of this nature are a great way of bringing talent into the team, without costing a fortune. However, if we got promoted, there's no reason we couldn't buy a player that had made a significant difference to our team. As other people have alluded to, look at Colback and what he did for us..............Townsend could well have made a big difference too, but of course that idiot Keane never gave him the chance.

Have to agree with Keaneish, what's the point of this? We already have a lot of central midfielders, Look at the last 5 years Loan's haven't go us any where, would rather see a young midfielder from lower league on a permanent, need to build a team, if we had to go for a loan player should have go a winger in, like Townsend who has played more fist team games. We still need another decent center back and I would say another full back and left midfielder oh and a striker not Heskey though! When you look at what other teams like Derby and the players they are going for, can't get excited about this.

Good luck Luongo! I'm not the biggest fan of loan players, but if he can do a good job and help us get to what we are looking to achieve (Top 10 finish) then I'm happy. Whilst it's good that we are getting players in what's happend to Connor Wickhams transfer money we got last year? Just a thought.

Dont know anything about this lad but look at Jewells rubbish loans last season Wabbarra prime example other loans did nothing to help a very poor season I can only see another struggle next season

Sounds promising, and I have no problem with it being a loan deal. Everyone has to realise that our midfield is not blessed with creativity that apparently this lad has, only Bullard can really spot that pass when he is on top form and after last seasons dip in form and Jewell openly saying that Bullard would not play every game, plus add it likely injuries, a busy Christmas period as always and you need a good squad of players. Not mouthwatering on paper no, lets judge the lad once we have all seen him though-maybe he will win a few of you doubters over, especially as over the last few seasons-two loan signings have won our player of the season award-Colback & Bullard anyone!

Nothing wrong with sgning good young players on loan, as long as it's a long term loan & he is not our first choice keeper with a 24 hour call back. I trust Klug & Jewell to have picked up a real talent here, so all is good for me with this deal. What surprises me though is that PJ was only saying the other day we need another physical type player in midfield & this lad appears to be more the silky creative type, so can we expect another CM player yet like Moussi or Henry from last year's wishlist? Hyam, Drury or Stevenson alongside Luongo would sound a bit.lightweight to me.

After all the hype this seems somewhat disappointing. I am not a fan of loanees as it clearly doesn't assist on building for the future - plus we will be giving a Spurs youngster some valuable experience rather than our own youngsters (Hyam etc). However, I do fully accept that Championship clubs need to rely on an occasional loan and at least this one is for a full season - I wish the guy well.

Diamondgeezer... good point, we are a working progress and patience is of the essence. Jewell went for the quick fix last year and we all know how that ended, dont we? This is nothing like Wabara loan, Klug is instrumental in getting this one in, that's good enough for me. And for you negative muppets, what has age got to do with anything? Wayne Rooney was 19 when he moved to old trafford for 25 million and speaking of old Trafford, a 17 year old marked a 27 year old, George Best out of the game, i can just about remember it, who was it? George Burley is the answer. So drop the age argument, The Late Great Sir Bobby Robson said, and i quote " if your good enough your old enough" I cant Believe that so many on here can have such a strong opinion on a player they havent seen play. Not a great fan of loan players but Jack Colback on loan was one of the very few things Keane did of any note, Colback was superb in his first spell. Lets see him play B4 we have an opinion, shall we.....COYB

Whilst I understand the frustration of those with an anti loan attitude we need to be realistic, I'm sure Klug would have had an input on this one and if anyone knows a good young player he does. Fundamentally I don't think the money is available to buy this type of talent (if he's as good as I have heard) and even if there was, would they sign for a Championship club on a permanent deal?

Only one senior game for Spurs eh? Tut tut. Now let me see. Who would he have to out perform? Modrich, Van de Vaart, Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Jenas, Scott Parker. . . FFS. He's 19 for pity's sake!! I have read some stupid comments & criticisms on here, but that really takes the biscuit. He sounds worth a punt to me. We were really lucky to get Gio, but you have to face facts. That was a one off and is not gonna happen again.

dont see the point in this signing. need someone that we know has genuine class and will be a presence in the centre of midfield and at 5ft 9 i dont see it. Dont see why we need him when we have lawrence hyam bullard drury stevenson all playing in his position. hopefully he'll prove me wrong...

Not convinced that we need another cm does this mean the end for hyam hope not as he and durry performances in CM saved jewells job IMO.

People can say it is moaning if they want, however I can't see the point in this type of loan. We can't keep hold of our own 19year olds so if he turns out to be great then we won't have any chance of signing him & go back to square one next season. Look at the other loans we have had, Gio, Townsend, Livermore, Colback - all really good players but no long term benefit to the club as we had no chance of signing them permanently. Where has the Connor Wickham transfer money gone?? And why are the club doing deals on a lemonade budget? Surely we can spend around £1-2m on an experienced midfielder who is not yet over the hill, considering the deals done so far only equate to about 400k? And before people starting shouting, yes so far PJ summer deals look promising & good business - well on paper at least.
StowTractorBoy added 12:13 - Jul 22
I am not against the loan at all just surpised it is for another central midfield player when our urgent need is for a wide left player which to me is more of a priority. The loans of Livermore and Townsend were not beneficial to Ipswich Town F.C. and Townsend was not impressive last season but hopefully this guy will be better than the aforementioned. As many have said on here Klug will have had an input as would Harry so lets just support the guy.

Warkytash, last time we spent good money on experienced midfielders they hardly set the place alight, Norris and especially Leadbitter, both costing in excess of £2m each. I do wonder like yourself why we seem to have no money especially after selling Wickham, you could look at it and say that a club with real promotion ambititions should be reinvesting ALL of that money, however the clubs has operating costs and debts that exceed income and that is where I think you'll find the Wickham money has gone.
Lukeybluey added 12:16 - Jul 22
considering we play more of a 4-2-3-1/ 4-3-3 formation, i think it's probably quite a good signing. He's being mentioned as an 'exciting creative midfielder', which in all honesty, we lack really in our younger player's. I'm quite excited by this and i hope he does well.

Who's the midfield ball winner in our side? Hyam the only natural one who fits this mould. Will he play every game? Not likely! I am excited by this but given what else we need as priority, it looks like we'll be starting the season with holes on the squad at this rate!

Do you know what chaps? I think we all just need the season to start really don't we, so we've got something concrete to discuss on here. A lot of these posts are a bit dramatic, considering that all we're talking about here is a fairly useful looking kid who may,or may not, have some impact this season. I don't think anyone's setting him up as the new Messi(ah). I'm still expecting at least two far more significant signings before August 18th.
ArnieM added 15:16 - Jul 22
Jewell really IS starting to assemble a bloody decent squad here guys. We will be light years better than last season "experimental" 1st season for Jewell. The team will be younger , more vibrant and the squad is consolidating nicely now as one or tow new players are drip fed into it. We just need a bit more brawn in the team now to beef it up a bit. Heskey on season long loan wouldn't be a bad shout tbh
