Davies Bid Was Accepted
Wednesday, 22nd Aug 2012 06:00

Town manager Paul Jewell has revealed that Derby accepted an offer from the Blues for Steve Davies before the striker agreed to join Bristol City on Monday. The Robins are believed to have paid the Rams £750,000 for the 24-year-old with Town likely to have matched that figure having spent months in negotiation with the Midlands club.

Jewell said: “It’s been an ongoing situation. I think the fee was agreed but Steven, for his own situation, he wanted to move quickly and he chose Bristol City. He’ll have his reasons for that and I wish him well.

“We were in the race for him, we would have liked him, we haven’t got him and that’s life. You miss out on some players, we move on to the next.

“He’s not the only player that we’re looking at, he’s not the only player in that position that we’ve been looking at or, indeed, have made offers for.”

The Town boss played down his interest in Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu, who is now a Stoke City target, and wouldn’t be drawn on other reported targets: “Without trying to put you off the scent, [with all] the speculation linking us with this player and that player, we could be here all day talking about it.

“We are in for players and I’ve said we need three players at least and we want to add them to the group. I’m not going to comment on speculation.”

However, asked whether he had any bids in at the present time, he responded: “Yes.”

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Ricardo Fuller has joined Charlton having left Stoke at the end of last season. The 32-year-old was mentioned in connection with a return to Portman Road earlier in the summer.

Still don't know what to make of this saga. But we must move on quickly. Just over nine days left in this transfer window and given the pleasing start we have made to the season so far it would be unfortunate indeed if we were forced to rely heavily on loans to see us through to January. Plus time is running out to sort out Lee Martin's future. The prospect of him walking away for nothing at the end of the season is looking increasingly inevitable as the chances of our selling him for serious money at this point in the transfer window look slim. Following the MacAuley/Norris/Leadbitter contracts PJ led us to believe that such mistakes would not happen again but Groundhog Day is approaching again.

Am I missing something here?

Is it me, or is someone telling porkies and just telling us what they think we want to hear?

Davies says Derby didn't want to accept a bid from us; PJ tells us we had a bid accepted.

McCoist tells us Ipswich have made a bid for Edu - PJ tells us we have not.

Now those statements can't all be correct, can they?

If the fee was accepted and he chose not to come here because he wanted a 'quick move' then it sums this all up, you have to wonder why it took us so long to make an acceptable offer after having chased him all summer, strange.
We have the makings of a good squad and a couple of additions are needed to ensure we have sufficient depth as I feel that given these we could be in with a chance of making the play offs.

First XI looking good but as others have said beyond that, we're thin on the ground. Drury has shown he's a capable player, Delaney can 'do a job' and Scotland is excellent off the bench but an injury to Edwards, Martin, Chopra, Chambers, Cresswell, Loach and we're bang in trouble.

1 or 2 more signings before the window with a loanee following shortly after and I will feel much better about our squad. I think a left sided midfield / striker to replace the hole Murphy has left and a central defender are priorities. Smith and Carson dropping out would be harsh, and the new players would need to earn their places but it would give us a lot more depth.

Having said that so far so good and long may it continue.

Daleyitfc - now that was funny! (strange how you still get -7 for that post). In reality the way things have been going of late in the transfer market it might have an air of truth (good workman like player all the same).
