Jewell: We Showed Character Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 18:23
Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side showed character to come from behind against Huddersfield but admits he is never confident that they are going to hold on to leads. The Terriers went in front in the first half via Adam Clayton then after the break Luke Chambers and Michael Chopra put the Blues ahead, James Vaughan later equalising for the visitors.
Jewell said: “I don’t think we’re ever all set at 2-1. I think the problem with us is that when we get to that winning situation we don’t seem to have that air of confidence that we can see the game out. That’s been the case for a while here.
“I think we showed good character coming back from a goal down. Huddersfield have got a really good hardworking unit. They’re used to winning, they’ve got a winning mentality.
“I looked at the stats and they’ve won 33 of the last 39 games that they’ve taken the lead in. That just shows that they’re used to winning, which is a credit to the management that’s gone before and the manager that’s here now, and the players.
“It’s never easy to come from a goal behind against anyone but certainly that’s the case against a team which expects to win when they go ahead.”
Overall, he was pleased with the performance: “I thought we mixed it up quite well, Daryl Murphy won all his headers. I thought on chances alone in the first half we at least deserved to go in level.
“Again, they’ve had one corner and scored from it, we’ve had plenty and haven’t. Murph’s had a good chance, balls have flashed across the box.
“I thought there were a lot of pleasing aspects to our game. Obviously, defensively we know we’ve got to improve, not just at the back but our defensive-mindedness when we’re attacking.
“I think you can sum up Ipswich by a 10-second passage in the game. We hit the inside of the post then 10 seconds later we got a penalty - that can’t be right.
“If we don’t score the goal and it comes out of the box, we’ve got to make sure that we’re not that easy to play against. That just sums us up.”
Jewell was pleased with Paul Taylor’s debut: “I think he’s going to be good for us. He’s a bundle of energy. He was absolutely out on his feet out there. It’s been a big week for him, it’s a big move for him but we think we’ve got a really good player.
“We think he can play in a number of positions, he’s bright and we’re pleased with him. I thought both him and Daryl Murphy both did very well today.”
The Blues boss was pleased to get a more positive result after the two losses: “I think what the important thing is that we’ve lost two games in a week, one heavily, one against a team in the division below us, and in the manner we did in extra-time.
“The question marks were there before the game and at half-time. I thought we showed plenty of guts, plenty of decent football as well.
“I thought it was a decent game for both sides, honest, trying to win the game. It was end to end, probably too open for mine and Simon’s liking but I thought it was important to get something out of the game.
“Obviously at 2-2 when they got the penalty, we were staring down a barrel and the keeper’s made a fantastic save.”
Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson agreed with his one-time manager at Bradford: “It was an open game, plenty of chances for both teams. We could have won it, we could have lost it, obviously there was the opportunity to win it at the end with the penalty.
“But, coming here, I would have settled for a draw at the start of the game. We had some good opportunities, but so did they.
“Probably about a fair result, entertaining game, both me and Paul were trying to win the game right from the start to the finish and to end 2-2 both managers will be both satisfied to get a point because we both could have won it, we both could have lost it.”

For years now our 'team' have been notoriously unreliable as individuals and today exemplified this.. Loach made some good saves including the penalty but looked decidedly dodgy under pressure. The same could be said of all the back four none of whom looked particularly solid. The midfield worked well together at times but Lee Martin apart there is no pace there and this just increased the pressure on the back four. Murphy and Taylor brought more to the team than Carson or JET but didn't do enough to support Chopra, who with the best will in the world, can't do it on his own against teams like Huddersfield. Until the players are coached to play a more pragmatic game we will continue to be 'up and down' in this league. We got away with it today; Huddersfield shot themselves in the foot by giving away so many niggling silly free kicks. When they moved the ball around we were always stretched and vulnerable. Still, onwards and upwards they say.
PS the set of officials today were the worst I've ever seen.
Moan moan moan! I enjoyed the game, for the first time in several seasons I feel that we are being entertained. We won't go up or down but its more fun than it has been!
We could easily have lost this match and indeed should have done which is disappointing as Huddersfield are not one of the better sides in the Championship but nevertheless played with great enthusiasm. We now all know Smith is not the answer and he needs a rest after 2 years when he has hardly had a break. My worst fears for Ainsley were unfounded as I thought he did quite well. Cresswell continues to disappoint

StanwayBlue I am glad you enjoyed the game and were entertained excellent and I am glad you had fun ,IDIOT I as a TOWN fan want to see the team play well instead of being an absolute shambles I would like to see my club beat clubs like Huddersfield instead of hanging on for a draw . Get rid of this inadequate manager and his useless coaching team JEWELL OUT
A very disappointing result against I believe will be one of the poorer teams in the division. In the end it was a point gained but it was 2 points thrown away when we were 2-1 up and until we get a decent partner for Chambers we will continue to stumble. Smith clearly needs a rest as he has hardly stopped playing over the past 2 years. Cresswell was again disappointing but I thought Ainslie put in a decent shift which was a plus for me. We could and should have been 2-0 up in the first half and how Murphy missed an open goal from 10 years or so is unbelievable. Luongo gets my man of the match and obviously Loach saved us from defeat. Martin needs to learn the defensive part of his game as he was clearly at fault for their equaliser. There is still much work to do but we have been saying that for years now and this league gets tougher every year.
Totally agree about the officials, the referee was the biggest jobsworth we have had here for awhile. No consistancy Couldn't really see what the foul was like that awarded them the penalty, but I'm pretty sure if our player (think it was Cresswell) had played the ball out quicker the ref would have waved play on and ignored the linesman and appeals. Great starts for Taylor and Murphy, and Ainsley did ok Defensivly I thought our midfield were lacking, they walked through us for their second goal. Sad to say that try as he might Tommy Smith is just not up to it.
This is going to be a long season and as a club we have gone backwards in the last 4 years. We struggle to attract talent to PR, we cannot get the deals done or struggle to complete formalities. This is down to SC and ME.
Now under PJ we have shipped over 2 goals per game on average and he has now had 2 full pre seasons to sort this out. We are again in a situation when we will mopping up the scraps that others don't want. We need 3 CDs ASAP as I have stated for over 12 months now that Tommy is not good enough. Where are our leaders, where is the defensive coaching and why has it taken PJ so long and he still hasn't sorted it. Letting Delaney go, is for me, the most idiotic decision that SC and PJ have made to date.
Yes I am moaning, but do not critise me for not supporting the club. I have the best interests of the club at heart and I am hurting - you all should be to.
The dynamic of the Championship has changed out of all recognition, especially in the past 5 years with parachute payments afforded to relegated premiership teams. Our current position, management and structure is not at the level require to compete. Change is needed or the slide will continue with obvious consequences.
IvorFeeling totally agree the results so far this season just show how poor this lot are from Evans down to the coaches are poor in the extreme the whole lot should go before we get relegated
Delaney has been allowed to go because jewell HAS a CB or 2 in the pipe line- initially as loans but with view to buying. He has "made do" with current back four for this game ( "this is not a 1 game season") , and then we have a 2 wk break. Time to allow the 2 CB or defenders anway, to be brought in from a Premiership club. But they wont releas these players until they have finalised their squads.
Get the defence right , and this team has great potential. I am just pissed off it has taken the Club so long to sort the major problem area out. "Build from the back" !
I thought Kuomo and Taylor were outstanding and Chopra again showed what a good player he is. Loachs penalty save was one of the best I have seen down at PR in 25 years and also pulled off some excellent saves so lots of plusses to take out a very entertaining game.
However.....unfortunately what we have all been bleating about on this site has again biten us on the bum. I thought BOTH our centre backs were absolutely shocking!!! It felt like groundhog day watching them team for the last 3-5 years which exactly the same issue, we just cannot defend, full stop!! Simple balls over the top, set peices, even simply knowing when to clear our lines we are atrocious at!!!
This stuff isnt rocket science and why do we always look likely to lose as soon as we go ahead? Its a fundamental lack of confidence in defending. Questions have to be asked why no CB's have come in as they were the absolute priority for at least the last 2 years. Shocking defending but excellent going forwards, we may entertained this season, but we wont be going anywhere I'm afraid guys.
have to say share everyones defensive concerns hurry up pj that aside things are slowly taking shape loach looks good chambers steadyluongo cresswell chopra taylor drury all of these compare very favourably to the likes of priskin healy fulop and other transfer disasters under kean with 2 cbacks and time to gel we can be a top six side attacking wise we looked more potent today than for a long time . anyone know who we are gonna get centre back wise
RetroBlue you seem to know a lot about this all I saw was a poor midfield just look at Hudds 2nd goal and the general defending awful. As for bringing in more loan players Jewell said he would not go down this street again after last season so he must be lying as we have already have 3 loanees this is pathetic JEWELL OUT
