Jewell Has Specific Central Defensive Targets in Mind
Monday, 3rd Sep 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has specific targets in mind as he looks to utilise the emergency loan market to add to his stretched central defensive options. Football League clubs are able to take players on loan for up to 93 days from next weekend.

Jewell is all too aware that with Damien Delaney moving on, he has been left with only two senior central defenders: “It’s an area of the team we need to improve, a blind man could see that. That’s one area, as well as other areas, that we’re looking to strengthen.

“You look around us and one thing which stands out is the size of us. We’ve brought Murph in and he’s been a big help to us physically with his size. We’ve got Guirane N’Daw who we’ve got to get fit. We’re trying to bring a bit of size in.

“I think that one long ball down the middle of our defence is an area where we’ve got to tighten up,” he added. “One long ball can’t cause us as many problems as it does and that’s where we need to improve, not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch with the squad we’re trying to assemble.”

Premier League clubs are often more willing to allow fringe players to move out on loan once the transfer window has closed, they've done all their business and have named their 25-man squads.

The Blues boss, who ideally wants loans with a view to permanent deals, says there are particular players he is hopeful of bringing in, even if he’s loathe to say he’s confident having had his fingers burnt before: “I haven’t just decided we need a centre-half, we’ve been trying to get one in for quite a while but it hasn’t quite happened for different reasons.

“There are specific players. I’m not going to say I’m confident because I said that after the Southend game. I know we need a centre-half and there are specific players that I’m looking to bring in.”

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has said his club would be willing to allow George Boyd to join the Blues on loan with a view to a permanent deal in January, but Jewell says no deal along those lines is yet set up: “Nothing’s in place. I said on Thursday or Friday that I wouldn’t rule it out but obviously we need to improve other parts of the team as well as that.

“We like George Boyd, we think he’s a good player but there’s nothing in place to take him on loan, it might happen, but there’s nothing in place.”

Loan players is not the only option. The Mark of a good manager and the coaching team is to improve what we have; what are they doing to imrpove Tommy Smith's defensive play? What are they doing to improve defensive tactics?

Well loans are now the only option until January so we are stuck with it.

It does amaze me though just how long our defence has been a problem and how many of our recent managers have failed miserably to deal with the issue!

righty - I agree with everything you said. Only a fool would be that confident a loan is necessarily a view to a permanent move. I remember Collins making noises about staying as I think briefly did Andrews. This is not the way forward now, or then, which means Jewell is no further forward.

Listening to the BBC Radio Suffolk phone in after the match, I thought it was interesting hearing comments that Smith and Chambers aren't a partnership as they are too similar. While they are both 'leaders' (for want of a better term), they need a defender next to them who can organise. Until we have one, we won't move forward.

1 year 8 months and 4 transfer windows and we still don't have 2 CB or a RB.

“It's an area of the team we need to improve, a blind man could see that Jewellio has to go."

I think PJ was right to let DD go as we have all read so many times on here that we think he is not good enough . The fault is not to have a better replacement.Loans like we've said won't really be the answer but what else can we do now. Players (signed or on loan ) will only come onboard if the money is right for them but also if they think the ship is sailing in the right direction and not sinking. Who wants to be on board a sinking ship. Collins may have stayed if PJ hadn't played 4 over 35's with no legs across the midfield in front of him offering no protection.PJ doesn't help himself by making stupid decisions. In one quote he'll say we need experience to get out of this division and bring out Dads Army , then realises that ain't working say youth is the way to go. Then loan players don't work as proven last year then low and behold " we'll use the loan market". Make up your mind PJ and instil some confidence in your ability to captain this once fantastic ship in both players and us long suffering fans!!!!!

Are there not any good CB's who are free agents? Am i correct that they could sign at any time?

Doctor_Albran added 11:20 - Sep 3
Anybody still a free agent at the end of the transfer window is either not good enough to attract a club, an injury concern or has v. expensive wages - or in Michael Owen's case, all three!

Selling DD without a replacement was to use the shopping analogy, like arriving home from Tesco with the shopping having been distracted by all the special offers on wines you've not tried before but are "half price" and your wife looks at the shopping and says "that's nice dear.... Now, what did you do with our kids?"

Selling DD without a replacement, is like turning up at work without any trousers on.

I really don't have any kind of axe to grind in terms of whether Jewell ought to be in or out. What I find intriguing, however, is that those who want to support him have self-appointed themselves as 'true' Town fans whilst those who want him out are vilified as 'negative' and not 'real fans'.
I am genuinely interested as to how this situation came about?
On the whole, if you've taken the trouble to comment on the TWTD thread I would have hoped that you have the best interests of Town at heart - but that obviously we'll all see things differently.
In my humble opinion, we really need BOTH sides of the argument in order to have a broader overall perspective of what is happening at Town during this unarguably trying times.
I would've hoped that the mad-clamour to get Bullard here (I admit I was all for it too last year!!) would've taught us that there is no definitively certain and correct way of perceiving things. Most of us were wrong/tricked by the Bullard fiasco.
I genuinely don't know if Jewell is good for Town or not (and, with respect, nor do any of us...) What we DO need, therefore, is open, constructive and honest dialogue so that we can more accurately see what is going on in the hope that we could help to avert errors of the Bullard-kind.
Just my opinion... :)

Town have had defensive issues for YEARS...not just under this current manager.

This CLUB has failed time and agian to sort this problem out. And until they get in, ....wait for it .

TWO CB'S
ONE RB
ONE LB

we will continue to ship goals

FFS Ipswich Town FC, SORT THIS BLOODY PROBLEM OUT NOW !!!

the thing is we have been needing new defenders for a couple of years now the last decent defender i can remember was gareth mcauley and why did we get rid of him if he knows we dont have a replacement, just for example delaney has just gone when he knows we are short of defenders. even if he was going to go get the replacement in first to be sure that you have enough defenders.

I'd like a Bugatti Veyron direct from the factory, today, and in red, no mileage on the clock, a full tank of petrol and a racetrack to play with it on. I've a tenner in my pocket, I'll wait no more than an hour or I'll have a shout 'cos I wont be happy.I'd like Bugatti to want to give it to me and also throw me a party for my services to them. It must never break down, and Bugatti must want to keep me happy no matter how much (or little I give them).

Thats what some fans expectations are like. Just because you want, PJ wants, Clegg or M.E. wants, doesnt mean its that simple, within time-frame, within budget and the player and current club wants it to happen. For the love of Bobby R, cant you get that? If they come, they come, if they go, they go. Believe it or not, us "fans" dont actually know the full story.

Damien Delaney was a shocking defender. FACT. If i asked him to take a bullet for me, he would miss it.

What is worrying is that all you muppets would have him as back up. He is not good enough for that job.

I agree with everyone who has posted it is incompetence not to have a back up defender.

But in your heart, would any of you have been happy to have gone into this period with DD as the only back up. I don't think so. i think getting rid of Delaney is the best thing Jewell has ever done. It is just a shame he goes and messes it up by not getting two centre backs in.

And for all you muppets out there wanting to get rid of Jewell - it is far too early. We cannot waste our money on paying off contracts this early in the season. Stop playing your footie games and get real. Let's assess the situation at the end of October - that is when things are normally settled and we know just howgood/bad the season will be.

@Jewellinthebum don't worry, you'll never buy a Bugatti Veyron. a '98 Nissan Micra maybe (but then you'll only have to worry about saving up for the insurance/tax)

i would imagine in 93 days Jewell wont be here!
i would expect to be hovering around 17th place in 93 days!
in 93 days i would expect attendances to be around 15000 and dropping!
in 93 days Simon Clegg will still be a usless w****r sucking the life from our great club!
Hope im wrong folks i really do

Long ball's are causing us problems but because Smith completely lacks the ability to judge a ball over the top.

Football seems to be in a right old mess in general really, not just our club.

Players just don't seem interested in staying anywhere for longer than 2 years these days..most sign a 3 year deal but you know damn well that once 2 years have gone they're looking after number one and on the search for their next big money move.

Something needs to be done to put an end to all of this otherwise teams are going to end up with totally different line-ups from one season to the next..i'd hate to see us end up like a QPR.

I'd happily see an end to all loan deals ideally and the transfer window closing a week before the season starts.
