Jewell Has Specific Central Defensive Targets in Mind Monday, 3rd Sep 2012 06:00 Town boss Paul Jewell has specific targets in mind as he looks to utilise the emergency loan market to add to his stretched central defensive options. Football League clubs are able to take players on loan for up to 93 days from next weekend.
Jewell is all too aware that with Damien Delaney moving on, he has been left with only two senior central defenders: “It’s an area of the team we need to improve, a blind man could see that. That’s one area, as well as other areas, that we’re looking to strengthen.
“You look around us and one thing which stands out is the size of us. We’ve brought Murph in and he’s been a big help to us physically with his size. We’ve got Guirane N’Daw who we’ve got to get fit. We’re trying to bring a bit of size in.
“I think that one long ball down the middle of our defence is an area where we’ve got to tighten up,” he added. “One long ball can’t cause us as many problems as it does and that’s where we need to improve, not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch with the squad we’re trying to assemble.”
Premier League clubs are often more willing to allow fringe players to move out on loan once the transfer window has closed, they've done all their business and have named their 25-man squads.
The Blues boss, who ideally wants loans with a view to permanent deals, says there are particular players he is hopeful of bringing in, even if he’s loathe to say he’s confident having had his fingers burnt before: “I haven’t just decided we need a centre-half, we’ve been trying to get one in for quite a while but it hasn’t quite happened for different reasons.
“There are specific players. I’m not going to say I’m confident because I said that after the Southend game. I know we need a centre-half and there are specific players that I’m looking to bring in.”
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has said his club would be willing to allow George Boyd to join the Blues on loan with a view to a permanent deal in January, but Jewell says no deal along those lines is yet set up: “Nothing’s in place. I said on Thursday or Friday that I wouldn’t rule it out but obviously we need to improve other parts of the team as well as that.
“We like George Boyd, we think he’s a good player but there’s nothing in place to take him on loan, it might happen, but there’s nothing in place.”

Spot on surco72, what are people really expecting. For people to slate others who are being positive at this stage of the season arent worth listening to. The forum is becoming too much of a slaying and notching site. Ok righty. In your world of pure fantasy, who would you have as manager who is available? For all of the hot air from people who do not want PJ they have not provided a credible name as an alternative.

changingman..... to answer your question, firstl i totally agree with you, opinions from both sides of the argument are needed for a balanced argument, However there are some posters who only post on here when there is bad news, they never comment on good news, these are the posters that get referred to as not true supporters because they barely salute a win and the 3 points that go with it. they will swear black is white to encourage others to want jewell out, this hardly encourages the stayaway supporters back IMO. These posters i refer to get excited when town lose, in the hope that jewell gets the boot, are these people supporters? i have never wanted town to lose a game so a manager is relieved of his post. I cant say that i am a jewell fan or otherwise, but i am a fan of continuity, it is no coincidence we are the longest serving championship club. I remember Wengar saying when keane was sacked, "sacking the manager seldom works", what would happen if we change now ? Come the end of the season, if jewell has achieved a lowly !5th or worse he will without doubt be relived of his post, its that simple, his contract will not be renewed. So until there is movement in the Managerial hotseat i will continue to support the team and the manager. Thats not to say i agree with everything he says or does, because i dont!...... imo its like being a parent, i dont agree with every decision my son makes, but he will always get my support. So for now lets all pull together, stop the hate Jewell campaign and just get behind the lads...YOU never know what that may achieve in the coming weeks......COYB

These comments are far more depressing than anything going on at the club. I am convinced that a lot of these moaners are the same people under different usernames, you can tell by the way they write and the words they repeatedly use to describe anyone trying to be positive (usually by calling them 'idiots') Anyone who wants a proper realistic view, read Dissboyitfc's post above; it is spot on.

Personally, I don't think comments on here will change PJs future and as a general rule I think managers should be given time. I do however find the transfer activity of the club perplexing. I don't think that can be laid just at PJs door. I suspect a few people on here need to relax a bit. No body has died and the club is some way off relegation.... Rome was not bought in a flat pack.

He needs them in asap otherwise we are in the brown smelly stuff. Saying that some people on here seem to think getting rid of pj is the answer, it isnt. Saying that he needs to show real improvement in the league position by Xmas otherwise he will under pressure, we cant keep loitering around 15th/16th/17th constantly, were a better club than that.

Any manager can have specific players in mind to bring to his club but if the clubs they are at do not want to deal or the players themselves do not want to go to that club the manager is powerless and has to accept the situation ! Do any of you realise that when you apply for a job ( with better pay or prospects ) the outcome is in the hands of someone else and they do not give a hoot about your feelings or wishes if they do not wish to deal with you . This is the same with footballers and the club managers ! We do not know what has been happening with prospective signings ( did their clubs not wish to deal or did the players not want to come and until we do we have to accept the situation and back the team to kick on and give us something to cheer with players who want to be with us !

our whole season hinges on now who he brings in deffo 1 excellent left centre half and 1 good right centre half other departments we can compete but this need sorting now difference between top ten + or bttm 8 looking over our shoulders if the maccy boy isnt to feature much this year then deffo a natural right back lot of difference at this level to a made right back to a natural right back and i dont dislike edwards good servant but a made right backits not good for a championship club to do with made and taken seriously

Paul & Barry Chuckle as our new centre back pairing. At least the young fans will be happy. To you, to me, to you, to me.

Everybody keeps talking about 2 cbs how about cover for the full back positions as well? Cresswell has hardly started the season off well and we all know about Edwards defensive capabilities. Ok Hewitt might be fir to play in a months time but no experience at this level at all and might be a tall order. It's amazing we've been talking about strengthening the defense now for almost 3 seasons and look how far we have got! As a few other posters have mentioned it's not JUST about the cbs it about how we attack with the midfield and full backs leaving ourselves vunerable to counter attacks.

After eighteen months in the job has he finally found his white stick. No wonder fans are getting impatient, as the dwindling attendences are proving. Now get some decent defenders in you scouser. And unless you have not noticed we are still in the same mess as when Keane left. Lets not forget the first game he watched sat in the PR stand - we managed a 1-0 win over Arsenal. My, my, how we have improved! Perhaps we should take up rugby again.

Bet all you idiots who keep on banging on about getting shot of Jewell, were the same idiots that held up those pathetic banners telling Magilton to do one.... By the way, wasn't he getting us near the playoffs? Be careful what you wish for

PJ has had more than enough time to secure the services of centre backs for this season, but for whatever reason, that has failed to materialise. Good succesful teams are built from the back (Steve Bould,s influence at Arsenal this season, read the stats). We have no cover for 2 average championship centre backs, that alone is unacceptable. I,ve backed Jewell since his appointment, but his failure to address this ongoing problem can no longer be considered acceptable. God help us if/when Smith or Chambers are either injured or suspended. I,ve always been a positive supporter, but this has tested my patience to the limit.

deja vu - same old Town, going around in circles - i truely dispair of course getting rid of PJ wont help, but he's making no progress with no money & a club that nobody will sign for ... more years of mid table mediocrity to come folks

Yes there: Thomas Varmalen, Ashley Cole, John Terry and Kyle Walker - and that's where they are in Paul Jewells mind!
