Hyam Agrees New Town Deal
Friday, 14th Sep 2012 06:05

Blues boss Paul Jewell has revealed that midfielder Luke Hyam has told him that he has agreed to sign a new Town contract taking him up to the summer of 2014.

On Monday, TWTD revealed that talks regarding the 20-year-old former Northgate High School pupil’s new terms were under way and appear to have swiftly reached a resolution.

Jewell said: “I just spoke to him and he’s agreed an extension to his contract, so I’m pleased with that. I think it’s an extra year.

“I had a long conversation with him this morning and I told him that I think he’s improved and there’s more improvement in him.”

The Blues boss says Hyam, who previously signed a one-year contract on wages understood to be just £650 a week in February, has the right approach to the game: “He’s got a great attitude, he found himself out of the picture last year, nowhere near the first team, and showed what hard work and determination can do.

“Arguably, he and Andy Drury turned last season around with the West Ham game. They were a major part of turning it around for us and we just wanted to reward him with an extra year’s contract, and hopefully we’ll extend that as we go on.

“He knows there are a lot of facets to his game that he needs to work on, he’s out of the team at the moment after injury, but he’s very close to it.”

A couple of recent reports have linked Leeds and Wolves with moves for the academy product but Jewell says that that’s news to him: “No, I certainly didn’t have any contact from them and we’re not looking to sell.”

The Blues manager says he’s not sure of progress on Lee Martin’s contract, talks between owner Marcus Evans and the player’s representative having started last month: “I left it with Marcus and his agent. I’m not quite sure what’s going on with that. We need to sort that out, we’d like Lee to stay.”

Only until 2014??..Can't we offer a bit more to a real talent?

I've got to say, I don't find the reward system such a bad way of doing things. We've all seen the pitfalls with some younger players being given too much to soon. Think they might have stretched the length of the contract a bit longer, although the same logic as wages applies I guess.

congrats on your new deal Luke you deserve it! I Really hope with a lot of improvement both him & Scott Loach become the backbone of our team in the future. Hopefully some of their pride in wearing the shirt can rub off on the other players.

" i think it's an extra year." This is a shocking statement. A local kid signs a contract extension and our "manager" can't even be bothered to find out exactly what the terms were.

It should have been a three year deal and this could be yet another mistake Martin still not signed so we might lose him for nothing next summer

Unforgiveable that Jewell does not know the detail - yet another example of his seemingly never ending tenure of mismanagement. Someone please tell me that Jewell's contract ends soon.

Too short a deal.

Good news, could have been longer though imo. AS regards Jewells use of the words, " i think" its a term he uses far to often, even said that he" thinks " he signed Murphy because there is a lack of height in the team. Of course he knows what the length is.... coyb

Great News, but I also echo the general agreement that this seems rather short. I am concerned this season is going to be a bit of a "Showcase" season for him with view to sell in the of season for a "profit"

However, it's great news the lad signed an extension for sure.

Hopefully they sort out a new deal for Martin ASAP. Showing quality and a determined attitude and work rate at the end of last season

Well done Clegg, we've signed him up for more years that's the main thing here

Another year in all fairness is the right thing to do. He is not a 'real' talent, that is a ridiculous statement. He is an OK young midfield player who still has an awful lot to learn.

And no one knows how much he earns so please can we stop banging on about £650 a week blah blah blah

At 20 years old £650 is a good wage by anyones standards.

Now send him out on loan. It did not do Rhodes any harm!

What, a whole year? Pushing the boat out again.

So in a years time, we'll back right back here again, by which time Hyam will have another 20+ first team appearances and be even more likely to have been noticed by other clubs.

Honestly, what has the lad got to do in order to get what he so clearly deserves? Move to another club looks like the obvious answer.

Good news. Now get some free agents in to bolster the squad, we all know what positions! Two or Three key injuries / suspensions and we are screwed as it stands.
Action not words please.

The deal is far to short this lad is special

If we're not careful I can see a Liam Trotter situation developing here and another championship team will offer him a longer deal to move.

Bah, he's a little t*t-grommet of a lad. We used to beat his like up round the school corridors, the ginger-scrote. Waste of time. Will amount to nothing.

Ipswich are better than everyone!

to be fair suzanna gekkaloys, he may be "a little t*t-grommet of a lad. We used to beat his like up round the school corridors, the ginger-scrote. Waste of time. who will amount to nothing. " as you put it, but hes now a professinal footballer on more money a week than you probably get in a month. who gets the last laugh i wonder?

Well done PJ this boy and a few others kept you in this job and all you can do is reward him with another year and so this time next season we will be in the same situation again IMO was worth at LEAST 2 maybe 3 years on top of his remaining contract.
Happy that he has signed but far from happy over the length of his contract considering how much jewell has wasted on some duffers that are now no longer with us !!!!!

good news - but jewell should work on his PR skills -

Why not lock him into a longer deal. If he doesn't improve he is still a decent squad player who can do a job in front of the defense. He's better than some of the players who have passed through this club in the last few years.
