Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51 Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.
Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.
“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.
“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”
The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.
"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”
Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.
“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.
“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.
“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.
“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”
Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.
Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.
“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.
“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.
“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

I was there, and it was embarrasing, we were dominate for the first half an hour and then the last 20 minutes, disgraceful how we didn't score, and a terrible pass by Drury for the first and terrible defending by Tommy Smith yet again for the second sums it up.

Why does Jewell not communicate with the team? Mowbray was always on the touchline and Jewell didn't look bothered, just sitting down all the time...

And Baldock and Sharp righty, plenty of targets out there who'll start doing the business for respective clubs! Why couldn't we get them? Wages! All for running a tighter ship but in key areas of the pitch, CB, CM and ST you have to float the boat a little as you pay for what you get! Heading to the game Wednesday and I hope there's a turnout of more than a poxy 16+. Big, Big game 6 games into the new season! What a farce. Let's let the club know exactly what we think. But what chant?

I wasn't at the game so I can only comment on what I heard on Radio Suffolk. I am very concerned than PJ has no idea what his best team is. I for one thought that Hyam starting the season as one of the stand out performers along with Massimo who is creative and tenacious. Drury also done well coming off the bench. Why has PJ effectively dropped these two massive players to the bench to accomodate Murphy and NDaw. I anticipated the return of long bvall footbal once Murphy was resigned. We need creativity. Taylor has impressed and is a good signing. We still need another 2 Centre backs and a goal scorer. Alex Mathie appears to be spot on with his assessments. Cresswell should be dropped and Whight given a chance,

We are no way near enough in to the league fixtures to start deciding whether or not jewell should go its only september, sounded like we dominated the last 20 mins and could, and should, of equalised, i can see what people are saying about wanting jewell to leave but to be honest if he did who would replace him?

On paper we have an excellent side. The problem is that football is not played on paper. It is the job of the management to organise and motivate the players and if it can't do that it should be changed. For ages I have been worried about the defence. If we concede two goals a game we will not win many football matches. Mr Jewell has had plently of time and used many different players, but we still don't have a reliable defence and without one we will be in constant danger of relegation.

Sorry if anyone else has posted these stats but stats are always interesting... Burley - 413 games - Won 188 (46%) Royle - 189 games - Won 81 (43%) Magilton - 156 games - Won 59 (38%) Keane - 81 games - Won 28 (35%) Jewell - 79 games - Won 30 (38%) make your own conclusions...

We have a squad that is overflowing with (mostly mediocre) midfield players, and Jewell therefore seems to think he has to fit as many in to the team as he can. We had plenty of midfielders of our own, yet he has still pulled in 3 more on loan (and will be 4 shortly with Boyd). But decent defenders, there are none. And now we don't know where the goal is either. Jewell was thw wrong man from the start (just like his 2 predecessors) and the longer he stays, the longer we stay still (or get worse).

Losing 2-0 at Middlesborough is an improvement over the last bad try up North (ie the Blackpool & Carlisle games). We do really need to win our home games. The team imho doesn't lack a cutting edge it seems to lack steely determination throughout. We can play good football but that doesn't guarantee winning games. Seems we keep making mistakes and getting punished for it. Better team steel & spirit is needed to stop that throughout the team & club. C'mon you Blues get it together with fighting team spirit...Go Town!

Went to the game yesterday, didn't see too much quality except from Taylor who appears to be an excellent signing. But didn't really put any real pressure on the Boro goal until Loungo came on for Drury. How can you expect to create chances Jewell when you play Murphy, N'Daw, Drury and Martin in midfeld. Martin does not do right midfield, Jewell everyone knows that by now. The reason N'Daw, a defensive midfielder was playing was to protect our back four against a poor Boro forward line. If Paul Jewell you had sorted out this defensive mess when McCaulley left we could have used Loungo from the word go and probably easily won the game. Jewell clearly has not got a CB lined-up and is now desparately searching the bargin basket once again, just like a husband trying to find his wife a Christmas present at four O,clock on Christams eve. He then has the front about moaning that there is not enough quality available - surprise surprise! This club has been going steadily downhill since Evans turned up - Is Magilton still available?

People can blame who they like it is the manager who should be big enough to stand up admit he cannot do anything at this club and should resign if he has anything about him. And to the previous post that says Jewell has more points than Keane, Keane had alot less defeats and not the horrendous defeats ie. Peterborough,Burnley and Blackpool
TimmyH added 11:47 - Sep 16
Keane had a lot of draws in relation to Jewell that's why he has a slightly worse win percentage and Magilton too had more draws and less losses than Jewell. In other words Jewell is no better than the previous two managers, certainly worse than Magilton. As regards the Wolves game in mid-week it is exactly the sort of game when the chips are down we generally win, unfortunately as another poster mentioned I too can see us winning possibly 2 of the next 3 games (which takes the heat of Jewell) only to continue to inconsistency further on, this has generally been the pattern for the last 2/3 seasons or so.

Let ME ,Clegg and Jewell know how unhappy we are as town fans against Wolves. Look at stats the last 2 mangers are the worst in years all in Evans reign

........ every decent Manager, at whatever level of the game, will agree that you build a team from the back - our Mr Jewell is still to realise that. But we have had plenty of decent players that would 'fit the bill' at the ground ready to sign (for the going rate) - for it all to fall apart at that point. Agreed, players are generally paid far too much, but until people vote with their feet wholesale, that will remain the case. Until if / when that happens - the going rate, is just that. Just hope The Bean Counter & Co realise it before we drift into total oblivion - no one can ignore the fact that we are pointed in that direction one way or another anyway. Of course we also need a Manager who knows what he's doing.

TractorCam - I think you answered your own question there matey - comparing the two Managers. We saw how committed Mogga was when he was with us - never less than 100%.

Many of you calling for the chop on Jewell and i can agree with you . The CEO and ME are as much to blame as PJ is .Probably more so as they hold the cards to how much we can spend. Honestly though if we sack Jewell whos out there who could do better . Be realistic !! Ill be there Wednesday in the lower Sir Bobby Robson stand . The thing i dont get is when i get to go a game( which is only mid week ones to be honest) no one is calling out for Jewell to be sacked , not like Keanos boo boys .

The most frustrating thing is the same old poor excuses coming from the manager when it is his team and his in ability to put these things right on the training ground!
JimmyBlue added 12:54 - Sep 16
It seems to me that PJ does not have a clue! 1st it was defensive errors costing us a win, now it is "no cutting edge". The excuses are get a bit tiresome. We have a midfield, the strongest combination looking like loan signings, and a strike force that cannot put the ball in the back of the net!! Now at the lower end of the table - needs some drastic changes.

Creswell is as much a liability as Edwards. Chambers isn't that much better than Smith. Div 1 defending.

Getting rid of PJ to bring in Gary Megson, Mick McCarthy or Alex McGleish would be stupid because they will all be very similar to Jewell. We need someone with fresh ideas, new coaching methods, enthusiasm etc. These lot are all managerial dinosaurs from the same era, they bring nothing new and in a year of their tenure we would be in exactly the same position as we are now. We should have got rid of PJ earlier and got Lee Clark or Chris Hughton before they went elsewhere. I would prefer a manager from the lower leagues whose on the up and whose reputation is growing and knows about the transfer market in the lower leagues.

Paul Jewell next manager to be sacked in the Championship? You can get 3/1 with some bookmakers, which are shorter odds than Ferguson leaving Peterborough...

Most annoying thing for me is that we aint that far from being a good side!! quailty centre half who is a big leader a bit more strengh in debth in the squad during the next window and we might have a chance of a play off finish next season. With the right manager of course.
