Taylor Terrific But Trying Too Hard
Monday, 17th Sep 2012 06:00

Blues boss Paul Jewell was pleased with recent signing Paul Taylor's performance during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough but felt the 24-year-old may have been trying just a touch too hard. The former Peterborough man was Town’s main threat at the Riverside, hitting a number of dangerous strikes but all too often failed to test Boro keeper Jason Steele.

Jewell said: “I think he’s a terrific player, he’s got good skills, the only thing I would say is, and I’ve said it to him in the dressing room, he didn’t hit the target.

“I think he’s just trying a little bit too hard. He gets in good situations, he’s made chances for himself, but he’s quite not making the goalkeeper work hard enough. I thought it was an excellent performance not just from him but a lot of players.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw made his Town debut on Teesside and his manager says he will only improve as he gets more matches under his belt: “He did fine. He’s a big unit, it was his first game for some time and he will get better for playing games.”

Despite conceding twice to Boro, Jewell thought his defence was generally more resolute than in some recent games: “What’s happened is that when we’ve come under a bit of pressure, certainly against Blackpool, we collapsed.

“I thought we stood up to the task at Middlesbrough, we passed the ball well, we created opportunities. I’m bored of saying it myself as much as anything, the only thing missing was goals.”

While Andy Drury’s misplaced pass led to the opening goal, the Blues boss felt that even after surrendering possession the situation might have been retrieved: “It was given away, but one ball given away shouldn’t always lead to a goal.

“It was an open game in the first half. Middlesbrough are a good team with good footballers, but I thought we edged the game and we edged the chances that were created without working the goalkeeper.

“Their second goal was a nonsensical goal from our point of view but we were chasing the game and everyone was up the pitch.

"Fair play to the goalkeeper, he thought quickly [to kick it long to scorer Mustapha Carayol] and the lad stuck it in well. The scoreline wasn’t a true reflection of the game.”

Jewell was at Molineux on Sunday lunchtime to watch Wednesday’s opponents Wolves beat Leicester City 2-1.

When Taylor was purchased I seem to recall PJ praising him for his work rate. Now he's saying that he works toooo hard. Daft.

And as for saying we need a couple of strikers capable of sticking the ball in the back of the net, why do we need a couple if he's only going to put one of them in the team?

As a striker i think you can try hard. you might run about a bit more than what you would, tiring yourself out and not playing your natural game. you might try too hard to score by shooting in situations where you would have been better off passing.

Taylor is a good sound player and he will come good scoring goals soon, the trouble is he is surrounded by some very ordinary players, I feel and hope he will start getting goals this week

Crikey there are some idiots here, or maybe they just like being negative for the sake of it.

By saying Taylor works too hard I imagine he means he's trying so hard to impress and look good rather than maybe just getting the job done. Obviously its not deliberate, its natural when you join a new club, but what PJ is saying makes sense.

Taylor is a brilliant signing, said it all along.

how on earth can you try too hard at least the guy is trying more than i can say for others i've said for ages we need a decent striker someone who has an eye for goal and can hold the ball up and bring others into play but they just won't listen lol

Well I think the lads played well enough to win the game against Boro but sadly couldnt find the net...the team looks sharp and the players are hungry...Mogga is right we have nothing to worry about at this point in the season ...however I will say that obviously this trend can not continue and I really beleive it will not we really do need to be confident and I would urge supporters to be patient our time is about to come I would say in the next 5 or so games we should see a huge improvemnt in out position as well as our goal tallys ...PJ is a creative manger but the season hasnt yet kicked off for us as yet be pateint 5 more games and I believe you will all be singing Flying high.....COYB!!!

So you would rather he does not try very hard then?

Jewell has missed the point. Taylor is playing like he should be, its the rest that are underperforming! Putting Murphy on the wing is bad as we need his height in the centre with Jason picking up the layoffs. Marting would also do better in centre behind these two leaving three in midfield. Simple really.

I think Taylor is an excellent signing too Garv but I have to question that price tag!

Paul Jewell - 'Man Manager of the Year - 2012'.

I mean, ffs, is that really the type of mixed message he should be communicating to a player who looks a bit like the kid who gets gang-buggered and then commits suicide in Scum? He's fragile enough as it is...

Why is it that almost every time PJ opens his mouth he says something that sounds really stupid? I just hope the squad don't hear it the same way I do, though it might explain a thing or two.

Many on here have distorted what PJ said i.e. “I think he's just trying a little bit too hard"

Its simples.... horses for courses....Taylor is a striker so play him there. Murphy is a target man so play him there up the middle... Martin is a winger play him there.... Edwards is a midfielder play him there... JET is unpredictable play him behind a front two in free role.... Play these people in the rightful positions and defence would have less work to do anyway. Chopra would be knackered and trying to hard if you put him right /left wing ridiculous!
