Murphy: Mick's Just the Man for Town
Friday, 2nd Nov 2012 15:10

Midfielder or striker Daryl Murphy says new manager Mick McCarthy is just the man to get Town out of their current situation. The 29-year-old Irishman previously played for McCarthy at Sunderland.

Murphy told the Irish Herald: “I had a full season of working under Mick, he has a great record in the Championship and if anyone can get us out of the mess we're in, it's Mick McCarthy.

"We just had a brief chat with Mick yesterday and he took us for training. I think I'm the only player that has played under Mick before [Carlos Edwards had a spell on loan with him at Wolves - TWTD], so it was good to hook up with him again and I think his record is excellent.

"It's hard for Mick to come into a situation like this, a team at the bottom of the table and where confidence is a bit low, but I know how Mick works and I think he has the character to get us out of it.

"Relegation is a horrible feeling and it would be unthinkable for a club like Ipswich Town to go down into League One, so we have to make sure that doesn't happen.

"I have worked with Mick before, he was the manager who gave me my second chance in England as he took me from Waterford United to Sunderland.”

Murphy, who had previously been a trainee at Luton Town, says he was disappointed to see McCarthy move on from the Stadium of Light: “When he brought me over to Sunderland everything looked great over there: Sunderland had just been promoted under Mick and we were all looking forward to the Premier League. But we ended up getting relegated and I was very sorry to see Mick leave.

"He won't have much time to settle in but from Mick's point of view he knows that we can't do any worse than we have been doing in the last while. All the players know that we have to start picking up points and winning games.

"There's almost a six-point gap between us and the team ahead of us, so if we don't start getting some points on board soon there could come a time when we're so far behind that even if we win some games it won't make any difference.”

Murphy, who admits his international career is now over, says everyone at Portman Road will have a blank sheet of paper: "It's a fresh start, everyone wants to try and get into the team, everyone will want to impress Mick. We have a big squad and we need to just start winning games, starting tomorrow.

"We have thrown away a lot of points. In lots of games we have been in front but we can't kill teams off.

"We just have to be more ruthless. We've had chances to kill teams off and not taken them, so Mick can maybe put that right.”

You need to wake up Murphy, you have been one of our worst players this season. Time to buck up. Its all very well talking the talk. We need you to start holding the ball up and be strong.

Don't think he has been one of our worst players- except for last Saturday- do hope he is played up top as he was great when he played there against Charlton for the 15 minutes or so until Clownio moved him.

Not our worst player by a long shot. Has been played out of position nearly all the time.

He seems so lazy when I see him play, but that's what strikers are. Maybe Mick will put you up front Murphy. I can't imagine Mick just having Campbell up top on his own as he is so small!

Most of Murphy's problem is that he is playing out of position. he's not a wide man & should be playing up front, where his strength and height would make him a useful target man.

You are just hoping he puts you up front, Murphy. If he doesn't, I would rather you were on the bench as you certainly don't have the engine, workrate & pace for left midfield. Rather see your aerial threat up top. About time we saw a performance from you - get your finger out!

W,Tash. One thing he def does do is get his finger out!

If he played loach, sent henderson back to hammers it wouldn't be so tricky picking are outfield team with a loanee out the way, becuase he really hasn't made any difference just creating selection probs! With loanee rulings

We apparently all agree that Murph should be played in a central attacking role. Why couldn't PJ realise that?
At least MM will know Murph's best position, and I look forward to getting the best out him now, and let's face it, he's the only player we've got who can win a high ball up front for us.

Rather see Mohsni up front myself. From what we've seen so far he's chomping at the bit and equally as good as Murph in the air.

I'm one of the few who think Murph is fine on the wing but could do with dropping into the box when the ball is out on the other wing more. He does have quite a good cross on him for a big man

Will be interesting to see if Mick goes with Murphy's physical and aerial presence. Could see Campbell partnering him to great effect.

Although he played a target man (Iwelumo) at Wolves, Ebanks-Blake was paired with Andy Keogh almost as frequently the season they got promoted. He then went with Doyle and Ebanks-Blake up front in the Prem.

Then before that at Sunderland he ditched his target man (Kevin Kyle) to play Stephen Elliot up front with Marcus Stewart the season they got promoted.

Send him back. I was a big fan of Murphy who always gave 100% however this loan spell has been his least effective and his presence in the team encourages hoof
ball to the left everytime the keeper has the ball.
Not a goal scorer either. Great servant but ti,e to go as on very big bucks

Murphy has been poor vs Hull and Sheff Weds, very good at Brighton, I think he another one who did not have a pre-season though in this most shambolic of seasons?
Have not seen too much of him up front so cannot comment but think he showed that he understood the Left mid position last year and was a solid performer- Brum away last year? It cannot be easy playing in front of Cresswell - defensively suspect and very rarely makes an over lapping run to create space- sorry if this was an instruction to him from Jewell
Murphy has some useful height in a small team.

To slow for this level of football , has attributes ,however easy to play against.

I have to admit I was one for his season loan after a reasonable spell last season but so far been a bit disappointed and as mentioned really slow when it comes to any defensive/tackling work.
Not surprised he's happy Mick's here as it always the case of patting an old pal/manager on the back and hoping he'll get in his good books!

Looking back at Micks teams from the past i dont think he like to play loan players much but giving all the loan players we have in ithink he will slowly change it thats where some of the youngsters will get a chance if your good enough your old enough and the loan players will find there self on the bench
When the tranfer market open you wont see many loan players in the team
Start off saturday with bringing Loach back in the team
