McCarthy Delighted for Fans
Monday, 12th Nov 2012 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted for Town supporters after they watched their side win at home in the league for the first time since March as they overcame Burnley 2-1 on Saturday. The new manager pointed out that he had had to wait slightly longer having been sacked by Wolves in February with their last win having come early that month.

McCarthy was pleased for supporters, who had watched their side fail to run out victors in a club record 10 home league games before Saturday, but also for himself: “It’s taken me longer than that, I’ve been out of the game for eight months!

“It’s lovely for them. They only want something to shout about, something to support. Everyone who has been here has tried to give them that.

“We all like to feel like I feel now, which is a nice, happy feeling, but I’m delighted for them. It’s a really good club, the supporters are great.”

He admitted he played every moment of the match himself: “I was kicking every ball. I’ve forgotten what it was like, to be honest.”

The 53-year-old says he had a chat with his players prior to the game: “I did have words with them before, it’s such a nice club that you don’t get the same levels of aggression from the sidelines if you’re not playing well.

“There are some clubs you go to where you’re really getting it. The players would be going into the town and getting it, knowing full well what it means to everybody.

“I think just because we get treated nicely here, it should mean just as much, even more so if we’re getting treated nicely because you want to do better for them, and I know Paul Jewell felt that way.”

On Friday McCarthy said that referring to matches as ‘must-win games’ added pressure and was keen to discourage that sort of thinking amongst the squad: “I was trying to stress to them that there’s no must-win game yet, there’s no vital game to win, but it’s great when you do.”

The big tactical move of the day was to switch skipper Carlos Edwards, who briefly played for McCarthy at Wolves during a loan spell, back into his old wide midfield role from right-back.

The new boss said he was very pleased with the Trinidadian’s contribution, which included the cross which led to DJ Campbell’s winning goal: “I was delighted. He’s better there. Maybe it was needs must that he was playing there at right-back.

“We get good things out of him, but that is him, he’s a much better wide right player. You need crosses into the box, you’ve got to have service as a centre forward.”

Agreed. Keep up the good work Carlos. Time to shine on the right. Martin doesn't suit that position anyway.

Have said for yonks he needs to be up the pitch attacking, well done MM.

Sort of agree Carlos is better wide right but with Tommy off on international duty he will be back in defence unless Hewitt is fit and ready for first team action.

Everyone will agree Carlos is no good as a right back we have all been saying it for years. However I didn't like how the 3-5-2 worked on saturday for the first half. Burnley were able to open us up at free will and there never seemed to be anyone free to take a pass off the back line. If we play like we did in the first half against a better opponent we will get nothing from the game.

Some great positives to take from Saturday; performance of N'Daw was highly noticeable, Wellens was like a little Jack Russell, fighting and scrapping for every ball, Edwards finally posting in his best role however, Reo-Coker still hasn't impressed me, maybe he's still not match fit?

Also, will the certain small number of fans that sit close to me in the lower SBR stand PLEASE stop giving Henderson stick every time he touches the ball, fickle noobs!

It's somewhat amazing that in November 2012, & on our 3rd manager, we are still looking for a replacement for David Wright. Carlos has been a good, hard working player for us & I certainly don't blame him, but our defensive weakness at right back has been a major part of our woes since RK took over. Converting Carlos to a full back should always have been a temporary measure, which we might have gotten away with for a few matches, but over the course of a season we just got punished again & again.
Thankfully I trust Mick to get it right. Hopefully Elliot Hewitt will make it easy for him.

Also NickITFC, I disagree.. Burnley are a very good attacking team, and although we were not sound in the first half I'd hardly say they had any clear cut chances.

How long have we been saying that Carlos is not a right back. Im delighted that someone in charge has seen it too!

Although at first it seemed a 3 5 2 formation after about 10 mins it was 4 4 2 with chambers playing right back and after a slow start I thought he did ok.

I liked the formation the slow start was a mix of new formation and nerves after Tuesday but once they settled in it worked. Chambers wasn't afraid to push up the field and put on a half decent cross or two, also Edwards has clearly learnt from playing on defence and was able to cover and and work the overlap with Chambers. I thought edwards started quite shakeup to begin with like he had forgotten what a winger does but he settled into it and unlike Martin or even Carson he does have the end product that killer pass that the strikers sp badly need. Jet played a big part in the goal too what an amazing pass

If Smith is away then put Ainsley right-back. Edwards has to play right mid. I/we have been saying this for months maybe even a year or so! Has to play right-mid.

Moshni can play centre back too can't he!?

Martin doesn't suit the wide right role and Carson suits it even less

Am I the only shocked ans slightly worried by this story....?
"THE FAI would not have to pay any compensation should they wish to secure the services of Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy it has emerged.
The former Ireland manager took over at Portman Road earlier this month and signed a two-and-a-half-year deal. But the 53-year-old had a clause inserted in his contract to allow him leave if his old job became available at the end of this season."
So if he keeps us up, starts to build a team but fancies his old job back where does this leave us??

I think we should be out of the bottom three just after Christmas MM is good but let's not get carried away if we don't go down from the start we had it would have been a good season COYB

Tractorcookie i guess a lot of that depends on how well he feels he is doing at town. if he is loving the job and we have finished in a decent position and he feel next year he can crack on and win he championship that decision would be far more difficult. if however he was getting no support from the Board, next season we were looking at league one football etc then of course the decision would not be as hard. He took over a team rock bottom of the championship who can really blame him for wanting that clause? I imagine it was a take it or leave it from him and boy did we need to take it the mess we were in.

Since when did a manager's contract mean they wouldn't leave? Happens all the time.

The clause suggests that no compensation would be payable, which seeing as we regularly let players leave for free...............

Just watched the highlights on the town website, Murphy was immense up front with D.J Campbell... I'm probably going to watch the highlights over and over again with a big daft grin on my face :)

If PJ had read this site like Mick clearly does then Edwards would have been switched to his 'natural' right wing position much earlier!!! ;) In all seriousness, I thought Carlos was brilliant. Unbelievable pace for a player of his age, looked a real threat every time he got the ball and great delivery for DJ's winner. I would love to see Mick bring in Alan Judge or Matt Ritchie to add both creativity and work rate to the left flank.

It was great to see N'Daw and Reo-Coker in the middle together too. Real strength and energy in the engine room.

At the back Tommy Smith had a great game, probably helped by Higginbotham's experience alongside him and having a 'true' defender at right back in Chambers.

Yep. That was the master stroke. Move Chambers to RB, HigginB and Smith in the middle and Cresswell at LB. I can't understand why PJ never did this!! Also, everyone has been saying Carlos was much more suited to midfield. Come to think of it, I don't remember RK playing him there either. Mick McCarthy walks on water!!

with 30 games left and a total of 90 points to play for , under MMs current ratio of 66% points return we are on target for a further 60 points , giving us a total of 73 points and circa 7th or 8th place finish. Lets be positive, anything is possible......

After the last 2 idiots in charge at last a man who I think will make a difference to this beloved club of ours. You talk sense MM and it's beginning to show on the pitch, we needed to have that 5-0 thrashing last Tuesday, I felt it would be a turning point!

There's still a long way to go but I finally believe we are on the right road at last, it's made me smile again :)

Mr Evans

That bunch of " fickle noobs " haven't got any support in them ! They are like that with most of our players ! It is their attitude which transmits to the players affecting how they play . After the treatment they gave Henderson on Saturday It would be no surprise to me if he asked ( or demanded ) to be sent back ! Their treatment could lead to the attitude of " If that is what they feel why should I bother ! "
