Town Confirm Wordsworth Signing
Wednesday, 30th Jan 2013 16:21

Town have confirmed the signing of Colchester United midfielder Anthony Wordsworth on a contract until the summer of 2015 with the option for a further year. TWTD revealed that the Blues were set to sign the 24-year-old more than a fortnight ago, manager Mick McCarthy having been spotted watching him in action back in November.

The fee is officially undisclosed but is understood to be in the region of an initial £100,000, rising to £200,000 with clauses, with Wordsworth’s Colchester contract up in the summer.

Born in Campden, Wordsworth came through the Colchester youth system and made his senior debut in August 2007.

Since then the central midfielder, who can also play wide, has made 155 starts and 44 substitute appearances, scoring 35 goals.

Last season he scored 13 times but this campaign, as the U’s have struggled near the foot of League One, the set-piece expert has managed only three.

Wordsworth is understood to have spent a few days training with the Blues squad a fortnight ago while the clubs negotiated the deal.

I hanen't seen him, but from what others say he seems to be an excellent buy; it is nice to see a permanent signing rather than all these loans. The only query is the contract length; 2.5 years with an option for another. The implication is that the club has the option, but it isn't clear. Perhaps Phil could clarify who has the option and do we know if there are any terms attached?

Don't know much about him but hope he has the same sort of impact that Matt Holland did!!!

Another excellent signing and a well needed addition to our surprisingly sparse midfield. Really hope he will be the spark to create some chances for the impressive-looking McGoldrick and whoever is his partner upfront. Murphy looking good recently, and looking fwd to seeing Nouble progress.

Well done the Mighty Mac!

Great! Now provide the bullets for McGoldrick.
He's left footed too so it'll be interesting to see if he comes straight into the centre or if he takes Martin's role.

I wonder how Martin would fair playing centre mid?

Well I hope that we finally have somebody who can pick a pass we have been crying out for this for years, it is a long time coming and I really hope Wordsworth is the answer from what a few posters have said it seems he also delivers a wicked corner and also can score from free kicks! Get in!!

From previous comments from people who do watch Colchester (of which I am not one) he's very lazy but quite useful when he can be arsed. I just hope he's not a poor man's Darren Currie. I will ofc reserve judgement until he's had a few games.

Perhaps I'm being a curmudgeonly old s@d, but could someone please ask these signings to dress up a bit? Is it really too much to ask them to put on a blazer and the club tie (that's OUR club tie by the way) rather than this endless succession of hoodies? There must be a branch a half decent tailor somewhere in Suffolk ...

Further to my last post, when wearing a blazer and tie, it is usual to wear a shirt as well ... and some respectable trousers ... proper shoes not trainers.

Walberswick you really are a t#*t! I get that u only venture that opinion to get others to bite - like me! But Jesus your life must be exciting where u have to fill it by criticising every decision, signing and result the club you supposedly support makes! I'm assuming you are an ITFC supporter and not a rival supporter trying to cause trouble so for gods sake make a positive comment!
Personally I'm looking forward to seeing what our new signings can add, securing championship status and kicking on next season!
