Town in Hunt for Winger
Saturday, 18th May 2013 21:23

Town are battling an unnamed Bundesliga side for the signature of free agent former Wolves midfielder Stephen Hunt, according to reports in Ireland. TWTD revealed that Hunt was on Blues boss Mick McCarthy’s wish-list back in November.

McCarthy took the Irish international to Molineux from Hull City for £3 million in August 2010 and the 31-year-old was a regular in his side for the next two seasons.

The ex-Crystal Palace, Brentford and Reading man missed much of the 2012/13 season due to calf and hernia problems before returning to action in March but couldn’t prevent his club from plummeting into League One.

Hunt is understood to be keen on a reunion with McCarthy, however, the Blues may not be able to match the terms on offer elsewhere with the Laois-born winger’s next contract likely to be the final big payday of his career.

Wolves told Hunt and two more of McCarthy’s signings, striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake — who is currently sidelined with a broken leg and an ankle ligament injury - and centre-half Christophe Berra, that they would not be offered new contracts earlier in the week.

Another of McCarthy’s former Wolves players, 32-year-old midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, was released by Hull on Thursday. The Nigerian impressed while on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the final two months of the season.

Meanwhile, we understand that loanee striker Daryl Murphy is still to learn whether the Blues will offer him permanent terms. The 30-year-old’s Celtic contract is up at the end of June.

He is past it and doesn't have a good disciplinary record. Why can't we sign some younger players and not Wolves has-beens/rejects? MM is doing a PJ!!!

Manager going back for old players shocker. Transfer rumours maybe, but only confirms that Mick is heading in the wrong direction IMO

Why is it that so many fans who comment on these stories can't work out the difference between tabloid tittle tattle and solid fact?
"Sort it out, Mick"
"Just like PJ/Jim/Keane..."
Erm, no it's not, it's idle paper talk until proven otherwise!

Yes please. This would be fantastic if Big Mick can pull it off. I feel we are going to have a good summer with players coming in!

“People talk about the quality in their squad, but they're getting relegated by the looks of things,” said the Yorkshireman. “Yes, they've got good players, but that doesn't mean I'll go tripping back there to sign them.

“Who's to know what they are going to cost and what wages they are on anyway? I'm not thinking that's my fishing ground at all. Not at all.”

Come on folks it is only paper talk "From reports in Ireland" for goodness sake. I admit to being depressed when I finished reading the article so went back and reread it and now feel better. IMO MM has only put one foot wrong so far - Scotland.

While mick is away on holiday we are going to be short on genuine news and developments so a few stories like this are all that can be 'reported' on

Its a no from me Too old If Wolves don't want him why do we? If he's not good enough to get them out of League 1 why would anyone think he's good enough to get us into the PL?
Young, quick and hungry is what I would like to see please.

We've had enough of 30 something signings under PJ...if he was a couple of years younger than probably a yes but he has to be past his best...to me this is a pretty important position we are now looking to fill as we are quite devoid of creative players so I'd defo say 'next one'.

I dont care if hes likely to want a 'final big pay day', make an offer that doesnt break the bannk, and if he rejects it then we move on.

I doubt this has any mileage. We will have to comply with FFP and paying high wages for him seems unlikely.

He was a very good player and if last season was a blip with regards to injury and the wages are right then i would certainly sign him up. Everytime i have seen him he always gives 100% something we need in that division. he will have a point ot prove as the disappointment of relegation twice in two years will be weighing on him.

Agree with everyone on here about young players. That is our future but we do need a little experience blended in. We could do worse than make a bid for the Bradford winger - a lot of potential and huge amounts of pace.!!!

I'm looking forward to when we can sign some players, not just be linked to every man and his dog like we always are.. In my opinion we need some young players, like Hyam and Cressy, who want to succeed mixed in with the experience also to steady the ship. But Hunt, steer clear from him.

A good player. But his recent injury record is a real worry. It will surely be a while before SEB plays again.

As for Murphy, well I know MM and a lot of people on here like him - and yes his effort and physical ability is excellent. But as a goal scorer, it hasn't been prolific. Would be worth a contract, but on a lot less money than he earns at the moment (rumoured to be £18-20K per week).

Would rather sign his brother.

Harry Forrester for me, turned down Ajax to go to brentford as wanted to play games. Fast, tricky winger and only 22 so plenty of improvement to come. A better option than hunt who would only be short term solution. I would take ebanks-Blake from wolves though, free transfer and just 27 so hitting his peak, always scored goals at this level and from area (ish) (cambridge) Know he is out for a while but worth risk IMO.
Without doubt MM knows what he is doing. Best manager the club has had in years.
