Grant Confirms Town Talks
Friday, 28th Jun 2013 16:11

Winger Joel Grant, who earlier this week agreed to join Yeovil Town on a free transfer with his contract at Wycombe up at the end of this month, has confirmed that he held talks with the Blues before opting to move to the Glovers.

Grant, 25, told the Western Gazette that he recently spoke to Town boss Mick McCarthy, TWTD having reported the Blues' interest a fortnight ago: “There’s been bit of interest, so I’ve heard from my agent. I was lucky enough to meet Mick McCarthy and he’s an excellent manager.

“But at the end of the day Yeovil have shown a keen interest right from the beginning of the close season and it’s one that I have decided to take them up on.

“I know it’s going to be tough for everyone but we will all give it a good go and that is something I want to be a part of — trying to keep Yeovil in the Championship.

“It was the work ethic of the team that attracted me, as well as the fact they earned promotion last season and the manager [Gary Johnson].

“Speaking to him he reminded me of Gareth Ainsworth at Wycombe Wanderers because he’s strong on work ethic and it’s something that I have improved in my game in recent years.”

Elsewhere, former Blues midfielder Ian Westlake has agreed to join Ryman League Needham Market for the season ahead. The 29-year-old left his previous club, the Montreal Impact in the MLS, in February 2012.

I think he realises his limitations and he would soon get found out if he joined us.

Now lets move on.

h32 you may revel in constantky underminng our club but to be honest you can tell from his statement that he knows for well his own limitations. Most ambitious footballers would prefer a tilt at promotion rather than playing for a limited team that is only in this league to make up the numbers. I say we dodged a bullet!

Big fish in little pond syndrome as far as I can see now , assuming his comments are true.

Despite the usual gloating from scum fans, no up and coming player worth his salt would turn their back on Ipswich Town FC in favour of a smaller , newly promoted club such as Yeovil ( no disrespect intended to them at all btw), whose remit is to avoid relegation back to League One. When Ipswich Town under MM are clearly aiming for promotion to the PL either this or next season. Id say Joel feels he cant handle the step up to ITFC. Thats fine , good luck to him at Yeovil. But he might never get another chance like the one offered him by MM.

Strange he talks of work ethic as a prompt to go to Yeovil....what is MM teams most renowned for again?

Fair play to him. Actually sounds pretty sensible to me. Ipswich are obviously much bigger than Yeovil but he seems pretty sincere in explaining why he chose them (manager, long term interest etc). Good luck to him.

JWM - you may well revel in constantly seeking excuses for everything - I choose not too.

And remember - 'the proof of the pudding is always in the eating' - therefore I would be careful at this stage, with your predictions, and putting other teams down.

Wait and See !!

Shame about Westlake, always liked him as a player, just goes to show in football you have to enjoy the moment, sometimes they don't last long!!!

For gods sake people, get over it.
I've never known such a non story to run so long and get such a reaction.
A player we've never heard of does'nt want to sign for us. Wheres the drama?
I would be far more concerned if Richard Stearman was signing for Yeovil.
Lets concentrate on the bigger fish.

Interesting decision , but its his to make. I suspect there would have been pages and pages of people whining at Clegg for this had he still been here.
h32 - you seem to be slipping back to your old ways, just when i had hope for you !

Work Ethic??? when you compare Johnson against Big Mick there is no comparison. Methinks he felt that Mick would find him out sooner rather than later, and may be he would become son of JET??

Bobblehat - It's called REALITY - seeing / saying it as it is - perhaps you should try it !!

What's the big mystery? Seems pretty clear that he chose Yeovil because he will probably play every game, whilst MM wasn't prepared to promise him that.

Jay Tabb, David McGoldrick, Cole Skuse, Darryl Murphy; all quality players who chose us.

MM will pull out even more great signings soon and this non-event will be soon forgotten, except by those who seek to criticise all the time, even when it's not warranted.

Sorry h32... I forgot that your opinion is the only one that counts!

I forget, why did Westlake leave in the first place?

JWM - ..... you know what they say about sarcasm ...... don't you ?

And anyway I've said it many times before : My opinion is as good as anyones - and better than none.

Where I am different (and proud of it) - is unlike some, I don't go thro' life making excuses for everything.
Maybe you could try that.

As I said, Johnson gave him the 'important player' speech, 'young, hungry, dynamic squad etc...' And Mick said 'you'll need to earn your place, no easy rides etc...' And he had a better feeling about Yeovil!

Now, why on earth you'd want to be in championship relegation battle when you could be knocking on the door of the prem only he'll know. Maybe he's looked at it and figured that teams coming up have a lot of momentum and under a decent manager in Johnson they'll be safe. Either way, no big loss.

I make no excuses about being a positive supporter of this football club. Come on mate we both support the Town and I have no axe tp grind with you. The big difference between us is that my glass is always half full, maybe you could try that,

anyone who honestly thinks that Yeovil could have offered him more money than us, is kiving in cloud cuckoo land. a club that until now have never been above lge 1 status, a much smaller club with smaller crowds than us. where you all think theyre money coming from? do u honestly believe that a clubthat, while of course they'll be trying not to, would certainly contemplate that they could end up back in lge1 again at end of the season, would splash money that they can ill afford with the ffp? maybe im wrong and they are doing that, but I suspect that they were offering guaranteed 1st team football while mm told him hed be a squad player here. either way, im not that bothered that he not signed, as, like I suspect, the vast majority of town fans had never heard of him until he was 1st linked with us. h32, while I don't agree with ur 1st post, ur right with ur 3rd that there will be some wholl give him stick. and I don't understand why. might have been different if hed said hed sign then changed his mind but hes made a choice that suited him. totally his prerogative. also have heard that Wycombe fans think hes fast, and that's about it, so a bit like danny Haynes then, a headless chicken.

no h32, u don't go making excuses, and if you read other peoples posts correctly nor does ne1 else. just because thir opinion is different to your constant whining and negativity you assume thyre making excuses/ really don't understand why u bother supporting this club if they disappoint you so much. in fact, its fans like you this club can do without. I try to be realistic with all my thoughts but I wont just whinge for the sake of it. maybe you should try it sometime. used to think jas0999 was the most negative poster on here but you make him sound totally positive
