McCarthy Delighted With Point
Saturday, 26th Oct 2013 18:23

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with his side’s point from their 1-1 draw at Bolton, but admitted that it was an under par performance.

“I’m delighted with a point because that’s possibly our worst performance away from home,” he said. “The game wasn’t particularly good.

“Downstairs I used the words awful, dour and dire in different interviews and that was probably what it was.

“But then we’re away from home, we’re 1-0 down, we get point. I’ve got to be delighted with that.”

Ryan Tunnicliffe was close to putting the Blues in front in the first half and McCarthy had praise for Bolton keeper Andy Lonergan: “We had the best chance certainly.

“Give the keeper a bit of credit, it’s a magnificent save. Tunners comes in and he puts it straight back on target and you think he should score. But you know what, the keeper, I thought was magnificent, it was a terrific save.”

The Town boss was pleased with the way his defence coped with Jermaine Beckford and David Ngog: “I thought the back four last week against Danny Ings and Sam Vokes were terrific and again today, against really tough opponents, I thought they were great. They were prepared to run in behind and they were a handful. I’m delighted with our back four.”

Despite right-back Luke Chambers appearing to take a knock near the end, McCarthy said everyone is fine: “He’s all right, nobody’s reported to me that they’re injured.”

Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman was disappointed that his side couldn’t claim their first home win of the season having gone ahead: “I felt that it was a very hard game, we were very dogged today. We showed organisation, we showed commitment and had enough chances to win the game.

“We got ourselves 1-0 up and I felt that we’ve let ourselves down because we conceded again too quickly and that’s not acceptable.

“So, all in all, we’re disappointed with the result after being 1-0 up and looking quite determined to win the game.”

He was pleased with scorer Medo Kamara: “It was a great freekick. I thought Medo did well, he was put up against an Ipswich team which was very dogged and we matched that, we showed our qualities.

“I thought Medo’s passing was very good today. He isn’t renowned for his freekicks as yet, but he does practice a lot of them. After the game he told me he needs to take more!”

Strange supporting Town at the moment especially away, we play reasonably well we get a point or none, play cr@p and we still get a point - has anybody told Mick if we score more than the opponents we can get 3 points?

Pip50 - you may want to check your maths, 69 points is on the cusp of play offs...

Dozzells bobblehat - thanks by the way. It seems like sensible fans who can see the wood for the trees, do basic arithmetic and understand the game are few and far between on this forum! I think some think the championship is done and dusted after 20 games!

A bit like missing the plane to the carribean and saying you're delighted to be in Brighton. Imo

If you read what McCarthy actually said, rather than just the headline, he's delighted with the point *considering how badly we played* and *having gone a goal behind*. Not the same thing at all as being happy to draw from the start.

Keanie and Boobie here are the workings clearly you don't have enough fingers.
Home 6 games 12 points average 2 x 23 equals 46
Away 7 games 4 points average 0.57 x 23 equals 13
46 plus 13 equals 59 equals mid table not top six.
Accept things can get better not under Mick one point will do.

Wish i had played under MM ,how ever well you play good or bad you will be selected the following week as long as you are fit . Thats a great incentive to all the squad ,which is why we are so average .
6 points from last 18 is not playoffs ,with 4 games against bottom half teams and two bottom 4 .Its no good being unlucky and losing against the top sides if you cannot beat teams at the bottom simple as . Mid table most we can hope for with this squad IMO

how come everyone is happy with a point? Mick, the fans, we're all happy with a point and we slip down to 14th. we're all happy with mid tables?

are you all on anti-depressants?

At last MM has noticed that Hyam has been poor lately and subbed him after another poor performance. Hopefully he will stick with Tabb on Friday.

Surco72 & kalypso.
You're both right, why is everybody happy with a point. Playing bottom of the table sides and being happy with a draw shows no ambition. Lets take a leaf out of Southampton's book and go out and try and win every game. If the players hear McCarthy saying he is happy with a point every week what chance of we ever got of having top flight football back at Portman road?

Pip 50 - your workings are so far , the point Keanish and I were making was the average we would need over the season , at no point did we say we were on target , but a point away as an average is a decent return .

If I recall, we were serving up dross for quite some time leading up to that game, and GB had clearly lost the plot.
You are probably one of those clowns who are caught in a time warp and would have ex players back like Talbot butcher mills kiwomya mariner mathie who were great on the pitch, but no good behind a managers desk.
