Cresswell Signs New Deal
Wednesday, 11th Dec 2013 16:46

Left-back Aaron Cresswell has signed a new contract with the Blues, extending his terms to June 2017.

The 23-year-old has been repeatedly linked with Premier League clubs, West Brom were said to be watching him earlier in the week, with manager Mick McCarthy believing he is the best left-back in the Championship.

The former Tranmere player told the club site: “I had about 18 months to run on my contract so obviously I’m delighted to have extended that.

“I am really enjoying my football here. There is a good feel about the place and it’s enjoyable coming to work every day.

“I feel I have progressed as a player and like any professional, I want to get to the top and that means playing in the Premier League. Hopefully I can do that with Ipswich.”

The Liverpudlian, who is 24 on Sunday, joined Town on July 1st 2011 at the end of his contract with Tranmere. A tribunal set terms which eventually saw the Blues pay Rovers £420,000 after a number of top-up clauses were triggered. The League One club are entitled to 20% of the profit Town make on any future sale.

Good news - won't effect in the slightest when he leaves, but it does protect our asset and makes sure we can command a decent fee for what is a very talented footballer. See Connor Wickham as an example of exactly this, signed a new deal then we flogged him for a fair bit.

Otherwise we run the risk of him waiting until the summer and then with a year left on his deal we're in a nervy position.

Good stuff., but lets please have a go this season and not sell him in Jan, I'm not sure people realise just how much he brings to the team.

The thing I quoted in an earlier comment has been removed, but it's from his twitter.
What I meant is that I hope he stays, and hopefully beyond this season:)

Even if he is looking to be off in the long run, it says a hell of a lot about the state of the club at the moment that he wants to sign a new contract meaning he'll be harder for other teams to sign. If he goes, so be it. I'm taking this as a vote of confidence for the current manager and for the current ownership. COYB

Unfortunately contracts do not mean that he is bound to stay until 2017, but it does increase his value. Anyone wanting to buy will have to pay a good price now in order to tease him away

This is bloody awesome!!! It shows that cressie is happy at the club and the fact he wants to help us push on and get to the premiership. Also puts us in a better position if we do end up having to sell him at a later date. Well done cressie and the town!!! Blue army

Let's give a bit of credit to Paul Jewell. With young Cresswell his judgement was perfect.

Well said 'minesapint'. Jewell couldn't get things right on the pitch, but he did sign some decent players. Unlike the Dark Lord.....

Great news, as has previously been said it won't make any difference with regards to when/if he goes, but certainly shows we are learning from past contract mistakes, well done ITFC.

Excellent news, with the improved results and now this news the last few weeks have been great being a Town fan. A positive result at Forest draw or win will set us up nicely for Christmas, keep up the good work all at Town. Extra positive now would be a couple of thousand more at home games.

Given that Ipswich are going to WIN this league THIS season he'll be playing for Town in the Premiership 9 months from now.

Great News ... Some really positive intent from the club.

Maybe they're a tad bored with this league too.

Good news but I imagine there is a release clause triggered should a bid of a certain amount come in.

No we can't say that he can't go. The only problem for some club wanting to buy is that they will need 20 million cash
