Berra: Cox Should Have Gone
Monday, 16th Dec 2013 09:44

Town centre-half Christophe Berra believes Nottingham Forest striker Simon Cox should have been shown a second yellow card for what he felt was a dive during the first half of Saturday’s 0-0 draw at the City Ground.

Cox took the ball past the advancing Dean Gerken and went to ground with replays showing there was little if any contact with the Blues keeper.

Referee Scott Mathieson waved the Forest protests away but took no further action against the Irish international, who had already been booked for a foul on Frank Nouble.

"I think it was a dive. I think he should have been sent off,” Berra said afterwards. "If the ref doesn't give a penalty, it has to be a yellow card.

It was a dive, I was looking straight at it, but they never got punished for it. That's football for you - the referee has the hardest job on the pitch."

The Scotland international was pleased with the draw: "I think in the long term it was a good point for us.

"They are a tough team and they have a big budget. They've spent a lot of money, so this is going to be a tough place to come for anyone.

"Our keeper made some excellent saves but then again their keeper did as well. We started off well but they came back and put us under pressure.

"The last 10 minutes we were on top, we were pushing for it. We're on a good run and we need to keep plugging away."

The "penalty" is a difficult one for me. 9 out of 10 referees would have given it, so credit to the ref as Cox was on his way down before any contact was made (looked to me like there would have been a little due to momentum). With that said, strikers know if they don't go down, they don't get the decision. That's the culture within the game, right or wrong, and until referees start giving the ones where the striker stays on his feet, nothing will change.

An honest pro and one of the main reasons we have improved so much.

You've got to take his word for it, although MM stated the opposite about a second yellow.

Have to praise the referee on Saturday as 9/10 would have given that to a home side. You could say that there was contact but he blatantly went looking for it. Wouldn't be surprised to see Simon Cox on the next series of Splash with Tom Daley.

Berra is a good, honest pro, but should he really have displaced the effective chambers/smith centre back partnership?? Had we signed stearman in the summer id have been interested to see if we still went in for berra. Doing a good job so must commend him for that

To answer your question Jimmy, yes Smith and Berra are the best 2 centre halfs at the club and Mick would love to sign Stearman in next window, if at all possible.

Bet chambers and smith was a great partnership and its clear chambers is less effective at right back but is doing a job for the team. Wolves are trying to get stearman tied down to a new contract, so would say thats prob a no go

Absolute agree with Berra it was not a penalty and that to the letter of the law Cox should have had a second yellow for simulation.

I was behind the goal and think the referee got it right (which is hard for me to admit when I'm and out-and-out ITFC supporter!)

Agree that it probably wasn't a penalty, however I'm not sure it should have been a yellow card. I don't agree that if it's not a pen then it should definitely be a card - say two people just happen to trip each other up in the box off the ball, the ref doesn't have to make a decision one way or another then. Someone explain why it should be different in cases like these?

Well he's definitely the best looking player we've ever had anyway.

Well said Christophe!!! Cox did dive, he was on his way down before Gerken made contact. Making contact does not mean a Foul!!!!!! Stan Collimore speaks a lot of sense on this subject on TSport. Cox should have been sent off & Davis should have been sent to the stands for his pathetic rant!!!

Spot on Christophe!
Having viewed it in slow motion from the TV highlights you could clearly see that Cox was already on his was down before Gerken's slight touch on him. It was not a penalty as Cox had knocked the ball so far to the left that even if he hadn't gone down it was not a goal scoring opportunity. (Despite what Steve Claridge said!)
So if its not a penalty it must be a dive = 2nd yellow = OFF!

I think he didn't get a second booking because his first one was a little harsh. He didn't touch Nouble and didn't affect his run so the ref probably took that into consideration.

Just as the ref has to be positive it's a foul in order to give a penalty, he also has to be positive it's a dive in order to give a booking. As SamWhiteUK alludes to above, it's quite possible for him to not see a foul or a dive and so wave play on.

chris makin. as usual from you, a totally wrong post. was dead in line with the penalty incident, and it was as clear a dive as you will ever see. he was on his way down before gerken got near him and there was no contact whatsoever. and while i some on here are suggesting it was his momentum that sent him to the floor(rubbish, why when you going round the keeper why would ur momentum make you fall over, unless you decided to go down), the fact that he chased after the ref, and was still complaining to the assistant ref a minute or so later, made it worse. berra is spot on.

Berra is completely right, referee would have sent off Cox if the incident had taken place later in the match. Cox was heading down before any contact was made, therefore it is a dive! From the away end it was clear to see he was going down early, therefore it's a dive and Cox is trying to con the ref. Also Lansbury should have got a red for his cynical foul on Cresswell and putting his head in too. Cresswell got a yellow for it so why didn't Lansbury get two?

supported town all my life but come off it-it was a pen if that was a town player we would be saying we were robbed and should have had a pen.cox went down lightly but there was contact he got the ball beyond gerkin and he brought him down.
we should be happy we got away with it and got a point not talking rubbish about how it was never a pen-take the good luck graciously when it comes

...... Referees take a lot of stick, often justified it has to be said - but this one got it 'spot on' in this instance - excellent refereeing.
