Cresswell Ignoring Speculation
Tuesday, 7th Jan 2014 06:00

It may be one of the most used football clichés of them all but Town defender Aaron Cresswell makes no apology for using it in response to questions about his future.

Those queries will only grow in volume during the January transfer window but the left-back is sticking doggedly to his standard one-game-at-a-time reply.

Liverpool-born Cresswell said: “I’m just getting on with my football, taking every game as it comes, and whatever gets said is out of my hands.

“I’m happy here at Ipswich and I’ve just signed a new deal. I’m as committed as ever, which is why I signed the new deal about a month ago now. I love it down here. At times my form could be better but overall I’m generally happy.”

Of course, should Town receive and accept a bid for the player reckoned by boss Mick McCarthy to be the best of his kind in the Championship, the situation will dramatically change.

That is a scenario not too difficult to imagine since Cresswell has performed consistently well over the past year or so and is known to have been eyed by a number of Premier League clubs.

Long-time admirers West Brom, Fulham and Southampton were once again represented at Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Preston, along with scouts from Hull City, Stoke and Tottenham, while Aston Villa made an enquiry in the summer of 2012.

For what remains of the transfer window the transfer speculation is set to continue, especially as McCarthy has admitted that the new, more lucrative contract until June 2017 to which Cresswell recently added his signature was in part designed to ensure Town receive full market value in the event of him being sold.

For the time being Cresswell is only too happy to talk about playing in the Premier League even if the transfer window comes and goes and he remains a Town player.

He added: “If we were to get promoted it would be one of the best days of my life. Every player out there wants to play at the highest level they can. For me it would kill two birds with the one stone.”

Can't see him being here at the end of the month. Seems too many clubs are interested, and £2-3 million isn't too much for a premiership club. If he does to, MM needs to be given the cash to replace and strengthen.

5 as a minimum, Mings will step in. Would rather him at least see out this season though. Especially as we are having a positive season with potential. If we was bottom half he would go. Being 6th will hopefully tempt him to see what comes of this season.

@alexsmith111 - be under no illusions - Cresser would be impossible for us to replace.

Whilst Mings might be more than able - there will be no one who can offer and deliver what Cresser does for us. He is currently fulfilling two roles. He's a very able and capable left back and is developing this side of his game well but he is also delivering the role of a winger as well - getting forward, delivering balls into the ball, assists and support play. Mings will not be able to do this and nor do we have a really decent wide left player that can pick up that slack if Mings is playing (Hunt aside, we are yet to see him play regularly).

A player like Cresswell who is both defensive and attacking in equal abundance is impossible for a team like us to replace.

Given our lack of creativity it would be a huge blow to lose him in January - if we have any (albeit feint) hope of grabbing a play-off place - it simply won't be possible without Cresswell.

Re: alexsmith... Have said it before on here and been 'down marked', but I'd be very surprised to get 5m for cresswell. Yes,.the prem clubs ave far more money than us, but the fact is that he remains unproven in the premiership and still a young player. Whileany have reportedly come to see him in recent months, how many have actually made bids? This to me suggests that he's perhaps not quite as much in demand as the scaremongers might believe.

Good news for us: I hope we keep him for years to come!

Can't see him going the only thing would be the wages a prem club could offer.
He is happy here the club is doing well and a big possible that we may be play off this year or even better.

End of season and still in the Championship then I think it's very possible he will go

You have to wonder... MM mentions Cresswell so often that it appears he is trying to court interest. I suspect MM has a grand plan (without Cresswell).

I would be reluctant to let him go for anything less than £5m given our current position. Yes we are in the play-offs but just about. If we lose such a valuable player for just £2-3m we will struggle to maintain our position.

Don't think MM is trying to court interest - it would not be in his interest, I think he is just giving recognition where recognition is due!

£5M at least - hahaha! (one of the above posts) - let's be realistic here, is he worth that? No should we try and get that for him? Yes, probably the worst defensively of our back 4 but we all know he has a good left foot and likes to get forward. Have to say the last few of his performances have been under par.

I think we need to cash in, in my belief i think he's overrated.
Fans that went to the Preston game would have seen that he didn't cross the ball once, and gave the ball away in the final third more than any other player.

Also on this point, i believe that Mings has the potential to be a midfield player.

Is he worth £5m? Probably not, but the club shouldn't let him go for any less. Good money for us, but peanuts for the majority of premier league clubs. It would be a blow to our promotion hopes if we were to lose him, with his goal assists in particular, creating more chances than our midfielders. Mings looks very promising, but don't think he's quite at the same standard as Cresswell.

in other news, I see our old friend Chopra is creating enemies for himself already at Blackpool... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25637583

I know we shouldn't care now he's gone, but it proves that MM knew what he was doing transfer-wise here. Hopefully he'll show the same nous over Cresswell!

Cressy's a big part of Town, wouldn't want to see him on the transfer list.

Forget about Chopra he isn't our player but ftb Cressy is.

Would prefer to see our manager saying we want to keep our best players and add to them to enable us to reach the promised land.

I hope the invisible man feels the same but we will never know.I would think however that Marcus realises that for the first time since he took over there is a realistic chance of him recouping his investment, especially if he were to allow Mick to spend money in the transfer window to purchase a classy midfielder as Woody hasn't'cut the mustard'so far in the Championship, although to be fair a player needs more than one game which he hasn't been given unlike Nouble Tabb or Anderson.
I hope Mr Evans still harbours the dream of reaching the Premiership along with the supporters;as the only other ways of recouping his outlay is to sell part of the training ground as building land,or selling the club!

He seems to have real passion for the club, and every week he delivers. The great player that he is, he will always cause transfer speculation, but the way town are performing in the championship this year makes me think he will stay. Hope I'm right!

....... let's just forget all this talk and let Cresswell live up to his so called reputation, and the team get some more wins on the board - shall we ?

Cresswell will be going nowhere unless someone comes in for him anyway, and after a mountain of hype and speculation that to date still hasn't happened.
In my opinion he is not irreplaceable , and I would question 'the best left back in the Championship' tag MM seems to have attached to him for some reason !

For all the talk he won't 'leave' unless someone wants him = we watch this space.

Stick with Mick Cressy: we are top six without even playing well; you are part of one of the leagues best defences; you will have a great winger in Hunt playing in front of you soon; strikers like SEB, Dids and Murph feeding off your crosses; and when the right creative midfielders become available we will have a very strong team capable of promotion!

One of our better players, but a little overrated. I think anything over £3m would be good business. I was impressed with Mings on saturday. If he does go then I am sure that Mick could improve the overall quality of the squad...assuming he is given the money to spend

Anyone willing to bet if Evans is offered 1.5 million he will snap their hands off.
