McCarthy Watches Palace's U21s
Tuesday, 21st Jan 2014 12:31

Town boss Mick McCarthy was spotted watching Crystal Palace’s U21s beat their Bristol City counterparts 2-0 at Tooting and Mitcham’s KNK Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Amongst the players that McCarthy, whose family home is not too far away in Bromley, will have caught in action were former Blues midfielder Owen Garvan and one-time Town keeper Neil Alexander.

Garvan was left out of Palace’s 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season and is believed to have been the subject of interest from unnamed Championship clubs during this transfer window.

Ex-loanee Tyrone Barnett was in action for the Robins following his recent loan from Peterborough, McCarthy having made an enquiry regarding the striker prior to his switch.

Would always fancy garvin to come back lazy player but has got the attacking threat from midfield we are missing

I dont think Garvan is lazy, he just has a lazy style of play. I'd be happy to see him back rather than Bramble!

I would say there is more chance of hell freezing over than us signing Garvan

This is the team from that match, out of those i'm assuming he was watching McCarthy (no relation) believe he didn't play all last season because of a groin injury but obviously now fit!

Palace: Alexander, Gordon, Dymond, Boateng, McCarthy (Croll 79), Chambers, Gray (Allassani 82), Garvan (G. Sow 60), Wilbraham, Jonny Williams, Kaikai. Subs not used: Gregory, Tieku.

Alexander sorely missed. Apparently his mrs never settled in ipso. Hopefully she's settled in South London. She's welcome to it.

I'd like to see Garvan back. Our midfield hoofing balls up for Shittu to head away was an absolute embarrassment the other day. We need someone who can pass the back into the feet of McGoldrick, Taylor etc.

We will get a centre back to help defend a 0-0

Whilst garvan has vision and can pass the ball he is also slow and too lightweight and would get knocked off the ball too easily, plus would be nice to get some goals from midfield and dont think he scores too often. Did well before for us though, just dont know whether he a mick type of player

Garvan played a big part in Palace's promotion last season, I can't see why he couldn't add that extra bit of class in our central midfield that's been missing.

My Palace mate was gutted that OG was not in the 25 - He offers something our midfield dont - a forward pass - plus ipswich24 , agree - they rate Jonny Williams - a class act

Love the slow, lazy, lightweight comments! Was good enough for a promotion winning side and did very little wrong in the game at selhurst park when they ripped us to pieces!

Just a few bullet points.
You cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear!
Wasn't keen on Mc Carthy as knew would get dour entertainment, although was right man to keep us up last season.
For over 2 years from when he took over(Oct 2002),Joe Royle didn't spend a penny but we got entertaining footy.
Royle and Robson gave youth a chance which MM doesn't.Bring back Marriott and Hewett.
Mc Carthy says his priority is a defender when the fans want a creative midfielder.
No width in team play Hunt and Taylor,or are they too attacking for MM?
Dont persevere with Tabb and Nouble as you havn't with Woody as none of them are good enough.Jury out on Tunnicliffe and Anderson for me.
Dont play Berra every game as you havn't any other player.Move Chambo back in middle with Smithy.
Surely manager doesn't tell his team to play hoofball all the time, why not try playing out from back sometimes and run at defenders,as you wont score many goals otherwise.
Finally the Club should try and attract punters.E ticket system putting some off I know, and its not that easy.Reduce matchday prices, take away matchday surcharge, and BRING BACK TELEPHONE PURCHASES.
Thank you,I am going to have a cup of tea now !!!

We are linked with old cast offs from other clubs, send our kids out to help others, get linked to players we got rid of and they played their best footie at theses clubs.Story of this club whats happening with board and managers here every season.

Garvan with Hyam and Skuse doing the ugly stuff. Yes please.

essexboy added 18:36 - Jan 21
Why do we want cast off's,when we are sending out kids who should be given a chance now. They are no worse than what we already have.We are never going to get promoted this season so give them a chance NOW.I get really fed up with my club associated with every 30 + player available? This is not the way this club should be going.Because of the new rule system we will not get any money to spend this season so we might as well blood the kids.COYB

Seasider. Spot on mate - let us start speaking out loud. Essex Boy. I agree too but while I think Evans is a major problem the not giving the younsters a chance is solely down to you know who!
