McCarthy Hoping to Make Deadline Day Addition
Friday, 31st Jan 2014 14:51

Town boss Mick McCarthy is hoping to tie up a signing to replace the departing Ryan Tunnicliffe this afternoon, with Leeds midfielder Paul Green understood to be that player. McCarthy currently expects no exits from Portman Road before tonight’s 11pm deadline, dismissing claims of Swansea interest in top scorer David McGoldrick.

Tunnicliffe’s loan has been cut short with Manchester United selling the midfielder to Fulham and McCarthy hopes to have his replacement in the squad for Saturday’s game at home to Bolton but is unconcerned if he has to wait a little longer.

“We’re trying,” he said. “I’m actually trying to get somebody in today, if that happens, brilliant, if it doesn’t there’s not a great deal I can do about it and the [loan window] opens in a week’s time.

“In fairness, he could be involved tomorrow, maybe not, so it’s not make or break. We could take him for 93 days if we took him when window’s shut.

“It’s just a matter of getting an answer really. The player wants to come and it’s fine. Depends whether they allow him to leave. So I don’t know in terms of a percentage, but I’d like to think it’s a good percentage in our favour that we’ll do it.”

Asked whether that player was Paul Green — who Leeds boss Brian McDermott has confirmed is the subject of an offerfrom an unnamed club — McCarthy was remaining tightlipped: “I tend not to talk about the players I’m trying to get in because I think it’s unfair to the parent club.

“If the parent club and says I’m looking at somebody from Manchester United, Manchester City or Leeds then I’ll be happy to talk about it. It always just leaves it open for other people to get involved as well, so I prefer not to.”

The Town boss confirmed that Tunnicliffe is joining Fulham and wishes him well: “Fulham are signing him, as far as I’m aware. I thought it was a fait accompli that one, a done deal.

“He won’t be coming back here. There was some suggestion he might go to another club, that they’ll loan him out, but I think if Fulham signing they’ll want all hands to the pump, do everything they can do to make sure they stay in the Premier League.

“I’m delighted for Tunners. I said to all the players that if they play well here, if they want to progress and you go to the Premier League, then fantastic, we’ll get somebody else in.

“Tunners wasn’t our player but he certainly came in and played like that. If we’ve helped to get him a Premier League move, I’m delighted.”

McCarthy believes the 21-year-old is ready for the top flight: “I do. Ability-wise, he is. I think there’s more to come from him, he can do more at times.

“I’ve said to him I think I had more belief in his ability than he had. But I think they’ve got a really good young player, who if he does the right things in his career, he’ll have a really good career in the Premier League.”

Aside from extensions to Elliott Hewitt’s loan at Gillingham and Freddie Veseli’s at Bury, McCarthy expects no one to be on their way out of Town before the 11pm deadline: “At the moment, no. There was an enquiry about one of them, but that’s as far as it went. I’m not going to [say who it was].”

Asked whether he wanted to knock down claims Swansea were set to make a £4 million offer for McGoldrick, he joked: “I’d want to knock it up, to be honest. I’d want to try and up the bid a bit!

“If they are [about to make a bid] they haven’t been in touch with me. I can categorically say I haven’t had any discussions about Dids with Swansea, or anybody else for that matter.”

Speaking about having seemingly kept hold of his best players during the window, he hinted that the enquiry may have been for one of the lower profile members of the squad: “I haven’t had any enquiries about them, which surprises me.

"It delights me actually because Tunners leaving has slightly destabilised it a bit because he’s played most games and he would be playing tomorrow if he was here."

McGoldrick, who is understood to have been interesting Crystal Palace, trained with the rest of the squad this morning.

McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn on reports earlier in the week claiming he had had a loan bid for Wolves striker Kevin Doyle, who is set to join QPR, rebuffed.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Frimpong has joined Barnsley on a permanent basis from Arsenal, having been linked with the Blues on a number of occasions since Mick McCarthy, who he spent time playing for during a loan spell at Wolves, took over at Portman Road.

Wolves striker Björn Bergmann Sigurdarson, linked with Town earlier today, is reportedly set to join Norwegian side Molde.

I think any paper or news company that reports and a false story to unsettle a player or make something happen should be fined.

Frimpong to Barnsley is an odd one. Perhaps he fancies playing against his old mate JET next season.

Doesnt mention Marriot going back out on loan though? So is he staying? Or has he already gone out on loan

Totally underwhelmed if he is the player to be coming in. Not any better than what we have and certainly doesn't get the pulse racing. Complete lack of interest, backing and ambition from evans. Pathetic especially when we are doing well this season

I think people are being unfair on Paul Green. I have always thought he's a decent hard working lad and I'm not surprised MM is looking to bring him in. He is very similar to LH and CS but that's the way we play and it's working. There isn't a top creative midfielder available who would come to us for free atm. Maybe drops Dids in, with Skuse holding and play Murphy and Nouble/Taylor/Ebanks Blake up top if he wants to try something different.

although got to agree Jimmy86. It would be nice to see ME give MM serious funds seeing as we have a chance this season.

Has Tunnicliffe signed for Fulham? Sky sports isn't mentioning him, nor does any website? Would be silly as they have just got Holtby? Anyone know?

Not a Paul Green fan. Hopefully if he sign's he might prove me wrong. If he comes in i will support him like the rest of the squad.

Poor ol M.E spent a fortune on garbage backing managers who couldn't find a footballer anywhere gave away couple golden nuggets I would imagine he's biding his thoughts did I you not see notts forest the other night look at what they brought on to change the game get a life boys smell the cookies it takes loads a money or a few years to build a squad mick I think your doing a grand job

There was talk of Wordsworth going out on loan, but i now think we should play him along side skuse as he would add height and some athletism as Hyam is a bit small in that respect. Green would give us another option in our small squad, and if McGoldrick does leave then we have a replacement in Taylor who has shown he has scored bags of goals at this level and works hard which is important.

Spanishblue forest have got a good squad coz they have thrown money at it big style coz of the moaning whinge bag that is billy davies, who hasn't ever stopped moaning about backing from the board and investment to improve an already good squad. They have game changers on the bench, we have no one who can really change a game. Yes he backed keane and jewell to no avail, but mick is the sort of manager he should give some money to. We are 7th and 4 points off the play offs. All we have been able to come up with is a leeds reserve who cant even get in their team. Uninspiring to be fair

When Mick says, "I can categorically say..." you tend to believe him - unlike about 98% of other football tycoons. Hope we keep McGoldrick. I'm optimistic. Maybe we'll get a loan in somewhere too.

Can't say i'm that impressed with this month's business.
We're all crying out for some creativity & cutting edge but all Mick's done is bring in a pointless right-back & a journeyman midfield workhorse.

I'm relatively happy with the job Mick's done in stabilising the club but surely there has to be more to us than this?.....

I'd rather see some of our kids given a chance ahead of next season.

Not a mention of Tunnicliffe on Sky Sports.

totally agree with Lightningboy

i dont think mick values creative midfielders as we dont really play through the midfield in the way that proper footballing teams do.
its hard for fans like me as on the one hand mick has saved us from relagation and got us competing in the top half but on the other hand he is playing a style of football I hate and loaning out young players to bring in old has beens

Not posted for a whilst but not sure what all the fuss is about, Green is a direct replacement for Tunnicliff and I am quite happy with this, and whilst people on here whinge about a lack of creativity in the side we are 7th in the league and are one of the highest scoring teams in the division.
Yes, we would all like to be able to attract high quality players here but Mick knows what he is doing and Evans is trying balance the books, looking at Portsmouth and many others I have no problem with this approach. We clearly needed a RB, we now have one, young players on loan are developing, and when they don't get games Mick sorts it out.
Given where we have come from over the last few years I think the future is looking good. Onwards and upwards

Why all the minuses for my first post??? Sorry if my opinion differs from gour blue tinted, blind follower views. We have had a really bad transfer window, having only signed 1 player on loan, whilst other teams including the likes of bournemouth, barnsley and huddersfield have all strengthened. I dont have any gripes with MM or the team. My gripe is with evans, who isn't remotely backing his manager. Mick seemingly doesnt do creative, flair players and prefers hard working grafters and this has achieved results, I for one expect more ambition from the club and that starts at the top.

Well said Saffron. I really do not know what people expect. We cannot spend heavily because of FFP and our gates are much lower than they were hence turnover will be lower once again, and so it spirals down each season. Mick is doing an fantastic job yet some on here are still not satisfied. Paul Green - it is true lets give him a chance.
