No Deal Before Deadline
Friday, 31st Jan 2014 21:15

Town will not now be signing the replacement for departed midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe before tonight’s 11pm deadline, we understand. Leeds’ Irish international midfielder Paul Green is believed have been the target with the Yorkshire club currently in a state of chaos, manager Brian McDermott having been sacked earlier this evening.

Earlier this afternoon, Town manager Mick McCarthy said he wanted to make the signing today, but otherwise would wait until the emergency window opens.

“I’m actually trying to get somebody in today, if that happens, brilliant, if it doesn’t there’s not a great deal I can do about it and the [loan window] opens in a week’s time.

“In fairness, he could be involved tomorrow, maybe not, so it’s not make or break. We could take him for 93 days if we took him when window’s shut.

“It’s just a matter of getting an answer really. The player wants to come and it’s fine. Depends whether they allow him to leave.”

The situation at Leeds is somewhat in a state of flux at present with a takeover ongoing and with former Middlesbrough defender Gianluca Festa set to be appointed the new boss by the incoming owners.

Meanwhile, Tunnicliffe's move from Manchester United for Fulham is expected to be formally confirmed by the Cottagers before the window closes at 11pm.

Elsewhere, former Blue Ed Upson has joined Millwall from Yeovil for a fee believed to be £100,000. Upson effectively replaces another former Town player Liam Trotter, who has joined tomorrow's opponents Bolton on loan.

cant believe there are people whinging about this as if its our fault this deal didn't go through before the deadline. but then, maybe the usual suspects think its mes fault that McDermott was sacked ay exactly the time we were trying to sign one of his players. but as others have said, the likes of jas0999 have finally got something to whinge about, even if unjustified. and just when I thought jas had changed his ways and become fairer with his posts. but no, hes back to his old best.

Ok this has not been the most exciting transfer window, but I think a lot of people on here have very short memories. We have already signed 2 good players shortly before this transfer window opened with Hunt and SEB. Although free transfers, they still would have cost loads in signing on fees, agent fees, wages etc. ME is still investing in the club but has his hands tied with the FFP rules, we are moving forward, let's get behind the team tomorrow, COYB!

Jas0999 You are right to moan as am I. The smallest squad has just got smaller. The so called smaller clubs have boosted their teams for different reasons and we have been left behind again. The only guy we were in for his manager gets sacked the same time sums up our usual transfer day .Very disappointed today as the loan window of 93 days if we were in the playoffs we would lose those players.

Whether you think people are moaning or not the fact remains we have the smallest squad in the league, FFP or not common sense says we should have brought 1 or 2 new faces in to bolster the squad especially with 3 players out on loan and Tunners leaving.
I think Micks hands are tied, the summer will be interesting, i dont think Mick will accept scrapping around for free transfers again.
Evans stubborness may cost us the stability Micks given us.
I hope not but Mick will want to push on next season and he cant do that with cast offs again.

I cannot believe the misery of some of our so called fans. Are many of you forgetting we did our smart business before the window opened with hunt and seb. This vanity of having to spend money to bring players in does my head in as well. The money is being spent on wages not transfer fees. Wise up and give the owner and manager some credit where it's due

NoelThe Dub-I would be prepared to have the inconvenience of not being able to field the loan player/s who will only be able to play for 93 days if we get to play offs.
Not sure if is the 93 days run from 1st Feb or when player signed as this could make a difference?
Am pleased that club has only lost Tunners in window as I was worried that we might have lost McGoldrick,Cresswell or Berra, who I think are our best players,to a Premiership club or an ambitious Championship club;so look forward to a good win especially as Hunty and Anderson would appear to be going to play on the wings.
Would also like to see Taylor played up front with McGoldrick playing in a slighly withdrawn roll or vice versa, and would also like to see Woody given a bit of time on the pitch;but have to trust MM's judgement.

.... this is all very well - but I can see attendance figures will continue to drop, some people will continue to condone whatever the Club serves up, and in the process 'knock others and tell them to go elsewhere' - while the Club slowly slips gracefully to whatever.

Is it too much for the owner of this Club to make some kind of statement / commitment to what his ambitions / aspirations for our Club are ?? ...... or is it too much to expect ?? ..... only asking !!

Oh, there will be a 'few' words of intent no doubt before the Season Tickets go on sale for 2014/15 of course.

In the meantime onwards and upwards !!!!

Oh well, disappointed we couldn't add a bit of creativity to the squad, but deep down I don't think it was going to happen this Jan.

At least Dids is still here.

Good luck lads, 3 points v Bolton tomorrow please.

Blueboy1981 - good point. Absolutely no word from ME this season at all. It's all gone quiet now his mouth piece Clegg has departed. At least when he was there we had some feedback/news. Most fans thought that if MM got Town knocking on the play-off door by Jan, ME would back him in the tfr window to go for a real push, but instead NOTHING. I appreciate that ME is funding the club, but he needs to come out & state a plan, now that we finally have a proper football manager in charge.

no blueboy, just stating the facts. people are saying we should have made 1 or 2 signings? well , wew were trying to make 1 which was scuppered by mcdermotts sacking. no1s fault. tho people like you will continue to blame ME for this. the facts whether you like it or not are, after giving the previous 3 managers £12m each to spend he will no longer just throw money at it, like somr clubs are. these clubs are risking there existence, and good luck to them. the fact is our club committed themselves to the ffp from the start and while it may not sit easily with the fans( I too btw would love us to spend on getting players in), but in a couple of years when it really kicks in we could have a distinct advantage over those clubs who are taking risks right now. for instance, if qpr should now fail to get promoted, they will be in big financial trouble. we cannot afford to get ourselves into this situation again as a 2nd administration could actually spell the end of the club completely. as it is, whether you think weve spent nothing or not, the fact is that we have spent loads this season already, with agents fees, signing on fees and wages. remember, theres no such thing as a free transfer. all that term means is that no transfer fee is paid to the players club for his services. as I said earlier id love us to spend bigger, but I for 1 will support the club in whatever they decide in regards to the signing of players, not because im comfortable with it necessarily but because I am a loyal fan of the club and wish to have the chance to continue to be so for the rest of my life. and before anyone accuses me of being overdramatic look at pompey for the perfect example of a club that spent big, only to regret it.

Actually agree with Jas0999 - we do have a thin squad. All it takes are injuries to our key positional players and we are down to the likes of October and Marriot. Let's hope MM bolsters the squad during the loan window. We are still short of a healthy, willing playmaker - we have too many workhorses; what we need is a star!

Guthrum added 02:12 - Feb 1
Surely the Manager is showing faith in the squad which has got us in and around the play-off places, by not buying in replacements for them.

It is this strange idea that, if you're doing well, it's necessary to spend a lot of money in the January transfer window to continue doing well. How does that work? You can understand the relegation strugglers looking to improve their squads as they fight for safety. But if you have a tight-knit, functioning team, why break it up?

for once walk the wark, I agree with you. tho maybe not for the same reason you think it. you , unless im wrong are just stating the negative comments you usually make. I, however, believe that we have a decent squad of players who have improved our position from previous seasons considerably. but, I never at any point have believed that we could go from a team that have finished in around 14thj or 15th place for the past 3 or 4 seasons to seriously challenging for a top six spot. the fact we have a chance to do so is an achievement in itself. the fact is weve made great strides this season and I am hopeful; that with a few decent additions in the summer we may indeed be in a position to challenge more seriously next season. but ne1 who really thought we would get a top six place this season was deluding themselves. of course, if things go our way, and with 1 or 2 loan players brought in it could happen but certainly not expecting it to anymore now than I was at start of the season.

People calm down! At lest we kept dids! By far our best player. The league table doesn't lie, we must at lest have a team capable of challenging for the top 6 otherwise we wouldnt be 7th.

BE POSITIVE!!!

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!!

Poor? Why is it poor that we didn't rush out and spend money we haven't got on players no better than what we have, which, it seems to me, is what lots of teams do at this stage of the season as panic sets in. I believe that the amount of money sloshing around in football has harmed the game immeasurably and FFP, which lots of people seem to think doesn't apply to us, is a long-overdue necessity. If it wasn't for Marcus Evans the club would be flat, Stoney broke, just like so many others. And in case people forget, we did get some players in recently: Richardson, Ebanks Blake and Hunt.
Transition doesn't happen overnight or over a season. If Mick can push us a few places further up the league every season then that, to my mind, is progress. And so far he is doing so much better than that. I don't mind watching the team win 1-0, it's much nicer than seeing a game full of goals, like some of the thrashings we endured only a season ago.

This was definitely a "glass half full" last transfer day for me in that we didn't lose anyone really significant. Sure, I'd have preferred Tunnicliffe to stay, but we'll get over that. The fact that we didn't get Paul Green is obviously due to the turmoil Leeds are in at the moment with their latest takeover. No-one there is going to sanction anything in that situation until they've got themselves sorted out. Expect Paul Green or someone else to arrive on loan in a week or two's time. In the meantime, I am beginning to like more and more Mick's "small band of brothers" approach. COYB!

I do not think MM should have started SEB on the 4th Jan. but eased him in as the game went on, say 15 mins. because now he has been out for a month and not even back in training yet ????? another month to get his fitness back, so possibly see him back on the pitch say March, that means we have lost him for approx. 2mths. this season ???
He did look keen what short tome we did see him.
