Town Closing In On Green Friday, 7th Feb 2014 18:14
TWTD understands Town are close to completing the signing of Leeds midfielder Paul Green on loan. The deal looks set to be confirmed over the weekend with Green, 30, available for selection at Barnsley if the paperwork is completed before noon on Saturday.
However, speaking on Thursday, manager Mick McCarthy said he didn't expect the player he was looking to recruit to be in his squad at Barnsley.
Earlier this afternoon, TWTD revealed the Blues had renewed their interest in Green having pulled out of a deal a week ago, the Whites wanting Town to pay too great a proportion of his wages.
Speaking last Saturday, the Blues manager didn’t rule out making a new attempt to sign Green on a 93-day emergency loan, but said he would also look at other options.
Former Town man Owen Garvan was amongst those eyed, although his ongoing patellar tendinitis may have meant that move was viewed as too risky, while an agreement regarding wages may again have been difficult.
Green was previously linked with the Blues during Paul Jewell’s time as boss, the former Town manager having signed him during his spell at Derby.
Pontefract-born Green started his career with Doncaster Rovers, joined Derby on a free transfer in the summer of 2008 and then moved on to Leeds in June 2012, signing a two-year deal. He has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring once.
The 5ft 9in tall midfielder has made 42 starts and four sub appearances during his time with Leeds, scoring four goals, one in last season's 2-0 defeat of the Blues at Elland Road.
Green hasn’t played a first team game for the Whites since October, having suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty in November but returned to training in January.

Another donkey, more neck-ache. Should fit in well. Not surprised as he fits Boring Billys style well. I am sure McGoldrick will be over the moon at the service he is going to get
Gotta say slightly uninspired by this however will cheer him as I do the others and wish him the best of luck - low expectation may lead to an unexpected return :-)
If we're so desperately in need of a "creative attacking midfielder", how come we're scoring so many goals? And McGoldrick can hardly be complaining about the service when he's bagged 15 goals already this season.
What you lot are actually saying is that you don't like the style in which we're scoring goals, winning games and climbing the table. After the last few seasons, I feel that's being overly picky.
thebeat - Yes, would love to see a good attacking midfielder come into the squad myself, certainly echo your thoughts on that one, but I don't think it will happen anytime soon. We really need a "class" player but can we compete on the wages front with other clubs, it's going to be interesting to see what if anything happens to the clubs that flout the FFP rules. What is the point us sticking to the letter of the law if other clubs don't and they get away with it.
A lot of McGoldrick's goals have been solo efforts and penalty's, I wonder how many more he would have got with a little extra service, and lets not forget how many tmes he has been asked to play that midfield role when needed to this season. That's not being picky wanting to have better players in the side, it's a desire to see us doing better. Best of luck tomorrow at Barnsley.
My first post…wished it was on something more exciting than the prospect of some ginger never-was signing for Town…BUT…in Mick I trust. He adds depth which is a minor bonus.
I think this is a pretty good signing. He's won all of his 20 caps for Ireland recently and he could be a solid signing for us. Let's not give him grief before he's even kicked a ball. MM has done excellently for us so far; if it wasn't for him we would be fighting for promotion from League 1. http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/trap-paul-green-can-be-our-gennaro-gattus
Looks like a hard working midfielder who does the dirty stuff well and can sniff out danger, i know this is something we already have but by the looks of it he also has an eye for the odd creative pass.
