McCarthy: Mings Frustrated By Lack of Games
Thursday, 6th Mar 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says left-back Tyrone Mings is "a little bit frustrated" by his lack of first team opportunities and would ideally like to send him out on loan to play games.

Mings, who signed from Chippenham Town in December 2012, has made five starts and eight sub appearances for the Blues this season, in addition to his full debut at Burnley on the final day of 2012/13.

“Ty’s great but Ty’s a little bit frustrated because he’s playing behind the best left-back in the league,” McCarthy said. “He can’t get a game, he’s busting his gut to play.

“He trains every day, he’s just getting a little bit frustrated. I’ve had that conversation with him. It’s hard for him.

“And I don’t have another left-back so I could send him out on loan somewhere to get some football, some meaningful football. We can’t do it.

“I’d love to be able to do it for him because he deserves to be playing in somebody’s team. But while Cressy’s around and playing like he is that’s going to be increasingly difficult.

“When it comes to this time of the season everybody starts asking what’s going to happen. There are 10 weeks left, but it’ll be gone like that and then we start again, and who knows what will happen.”

McCarthy believes there would be plenty of interest if he were to make the full-back, who skippered the U21s in their victory over QPR on Tuesday, available for loan: “I think we’d have plenty of takers for him.”

The Town boss sympathises with the one-time Southampton trainee: “There are times when it’s hard.

“I love the kid, he’s great, his attitude, everything towards him being a professional footballer, and I would love to say to him ‘Go and have some games’ and I’ve got somebody else who can fill in for him, but I haven’t.

“We’ve got seven games this month and six the following one. They’re going to come thick and fast, so maybe he will get his chance purely and simply because I’ll have to put fresh legs in, hopefully nobody gets injured. There’s every chance everybody will have to play.”

Earlier in the season Mings, who celebrates his 21st birthday next Thursday, extended his Town contract until the summer of 2015 with an option for a further year.

His presence would make it a little easier to accept a, say, £4m offer for Cresswell, assuming we don't have a stellar March and remain in the Championship.

Cue the mark downs!

If, as I expect, we are out of the play off picture by this time next month, Mick should give him a run of games. Bet he wont though.

I'd play him, IMO cressy been below par the last couple of weeks.

@Wickets

Agree with you on that. I think Cressy could do a really decent job a left midfield, and it gives Ty a chance to get some games under his belt at left back.

Ty clearly needs to realise he's not going to get ahead of cressy, Mick has gave him the chance of a lifetime taking him from non league and he's already complaining about lack of games in the first 6 months. I think he's going to be a really good player for us one day but he's got to be patient

Gerkens Beard - Mings hasn't complained to the press. He has complained to MM, which is a different thing.

It shows he is ambitious and keen and doesn't thing he has made it, just because he has signed a professional contract

I think that this is more about putting Cresswell in the shop window rather than anything about Mings

Been saying for a couple of seasons at we should play Cresswell on the left of midfield..now that we have Mings at left back this seems a no-brainer.

Mick tried Cresswell in midfield during pre season, without much success. Cresswell and Mings are both left backs and should be played in position. Trouble for Mings is that cresswell is the better player at the moment, which is unfortunate for him, but good news for us. Two good left backs! Whether cresswell is the best left back in the league remains to be seen though. He's good no doubt, but the best?

...... should think he is dissapointed - another youngster with much potential who should be given his chance - HERE.

Sadly, yet another young un' that may well leave the Club - and succeed elsewhere.

....... behind 'the best left back in the League' - decent / good, but the tag is questionable in my opinion.

Be overated doesn't help him either .............. !! Cresswell that is.

Couldnt we loan him out with this 24 hour recall clause that for example Hendo had when he was here on loan?
He is a decent talent and his attitude seems right, so its a shame that he doesnt get to play. I reckon Cressy will move in the summer if we dont go up, if thats the case then its time to shine Ty.

Yeah and someone mentioned it, Cressy would make a decent left midfielder. Strange that we've never tried it before? Maybe it hasnt worked in training. I dont know.

I don't think he has "complained." He might have expressed an opinion to MM, but to say he has complained puts him in a negative light, which seems very unfair. Judging from his past behaviour, he seems the model of a decent young man. He's just showing commitment and ambition, and I hope that in the long run we find an outlet for those at ITFC, not elsewhere, although I do understand MM's decision at present.

All thasts happened is the kid has shown some desire to play, any footballer should want to. I imagine a toys out the pram situation here. I say good and I hope all those that are bench warming feel the same

Sindre - I'd think the reason we don't loan him out with a recall clause is that he's good cover on the bench for both LB & CB. I agree he does seem to have the right attitude which I guess is why MM is talking about him so that he feels valued at the club.

....... would be a real shame to lose this lad - a real potential success story this one is.
