McCarthy: No Wholesale Changes at Yeovil
Monday, 10th Mar 2014 10:48

Boss Mick McCarthy says he could look to freshen his side up at Yeovil on Tuesday but has ruled out making wholesale changes. Anthony Wordsworth is again set to miss out with a back injury, while Frank Nouble is a doubt with a minor hamstring problem.

“There’s a thin dividing line between freshening it up and having too many players in the team [short of match sharpness], like in the League Cup when you’ve got five or six in who haven’t been playing,” McCarthy said. “I’m not about to start doing that. But there’s the potential for freshening it up.”

The Town boss says Wordsworth is likely to miss out, while Nouble aggravated the injury which forced him off just after half-time a week ago: “Woody’s been struggling with his back and still is, he’s got a very sore back. Frank has got a bit of a hamstring, I think from the Birmingham game.

“He played the 45 minutes [on Saturday] and it didn’t look like it was bothering him then, but maybe sitting on a bus for five hours coming back’s caused a problem with it, so he’s got a tight hamstring this morning.”

He says centre-half Christophe Berra is fine despite requiring treatment for a foot injury following a solid challenge with George Friend at the weekend: “Surprisingly he’s OK, it was a real crunching tackle. Nothing in it, by the way, it was just a physically tough tackle and he’s fine.”

McCarthy says striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is now up to be included from the beginning of a match - “Yes, he’s ready to start” — although as usual was keeping his cards close to his chest regarding his team selection.

He confirmed that 17-year-old midfielder Teddy Bishop would again travel and that skipper Carlos Edwards would be making the trip having been left behind at the weekend: “He’s coming, so he’s got a chance [of being involved].

“That wasn’t so much me leaving him behind as him asking to stay behind to train. It’s not a nice trip if you’re not playing but at least he trained, otherwise you don’t train and you end up doing a little Friday, nothing Saturday, a little bit on Sunday. Fair play to him, he wants to keep himself sharp.”

The squad will undergo cryotherapy after training this morning before leaving for Somerset at lunchtime.

Meanwhile, McCarthy laughed off claims in one of this morning’s national newspapers that he had been told his budget must be cut by £3 million.

.......... Do we really need to change anything ??? - some people think we are doing just fine, and well content with the team selection and the way we play ........ !!! - music to Mick's ears that.

I suppose the 'travel curse' will come into tomorrows game if we lose - maybe a couple of miles too far this one to expect too much in terms of a result ........ !!! - let's fit in a tea break, it may help.

Maybe playing players in there rightful position - would really mess us up ....... !!! - best not do that.

Keep the faith Sindre94 - we'll get there one day - but when I'm not too sure.

mm was the managerial choice to save us from relegation. we will never be promoted under his management .this season is over now anyone who thinks differently is residing in cuckoo land , and until we appoint a manager who is capable of bringing through young players and more importantly DEVELOPING them , we will get nowhere . Players like Elliott Hewitt , jack Marriott , Byron Lawrence etc etc should now be brought through into the team and assessed on their ability at this level . Under this manager they will not be given the chance to progress .

I still am happy with the job MM has done and is by making us hard to beat and have now got a couple of bits of quality (Taylor,Williams) but I have to say I was astounded with the team that started the second half Sat. Tabb, Skuse, Hyam, Green in midfield. Was like going back to the Jewell days with 4 CM's in midfield and especially considering we were 2-0 down second half when we needed to chase the game. Absolutely baffled me, but going by Micks comments I would expect this team to start tomorrow

Gerken
Richardson, Chambers, Smith, Cressie
Hyam, Skuse, Williams,
Taylor, SEB, Murphy

My reason for this is that MM keeps banging on about geography so will look to give Berra and Nouble who picked up knocks at the weekend a rest before Wigan Saturday, Green had a shocker Saturday and will probably be tested as well as Tabb allowing the more creative Williams a game as MM has stressed his desire to play him and was set to start against B'ham last sat. Can't take Taylor out with how he's playing and has said SEB is ready to start. That for me is a team which he will most probably put out and wouldn't be a bad one either

Dontunderstand why we haven't gone 352. That way you can still play Chambers, Berra and Smith. Cresswell and Richardson as wing backs, Hyam and Skuse holding midfield then give Taylor a free role behind the front 2 of SEB and Murphy, then at home switch Hyam for a more attacking midfeilder. Also its now time to switch the keepers. Gherkin made yet another mistake at the weekend. In recent weeks he has made far too many and Loach vot dropped cor less. Loach had 1 chance and put in a man of the match performance against Blackpool.

This is an interesting game for our progress theorists on this site. Yeovil certain to get relegated won 4 at home all season and score less than a goal a game. Looks like a banker to me!!

'Wholesale changes' aren't Micks philosophy anyway, how ever bad we play he likes to keep the core of the midfield as we all know workman like and fairly defensive. So even though this is against Yeovil (who have beaten Forest at home) you can never underestimate a Championship struggler but what is on our side is that you very rarely get a team struggling near the bottom getting back to back home wins in a few days - so going by this I fancy we might just get a sneaky win even if Mick plays his ol' favs Tabb and a partially injured Nouble.

This is what i would like to see (in a 442 diamond):

GK: Gerken
RB: Richardson
RCB: Chambers
LCB: Smith
LB: Mings
CDM: Skuse
RM: Anderson
LM: Cresswell
CAM: Williams
ST: Murphy
ST: Taylor

Chambers at right back just isn't working for me. He is a CB and his partnership with smith last season was great. I think Berra has been great but as he is a left footed player there is no place for him as I cant replace smith.

As for left back and left mid..... We do not have a LM who can last a full 90 mins. Hunt is a great player with lots of energy but tends to loose energy later on in the game, he can be a great impact player from the bench. If I could I would duplicate Cresswell and put him in left mid and left back but we cant.

Just an idea...

itfc_leggett, that's a decent side. Like the idea of Cresswell in midfield.

Don't care who plays so long as Hyam is not in the starting 11. Offers nothing!

Gerken
Chambers, Berra, Smith, Cresswell
Anderson, Skuse, Williams, Hunt
Taylor, SEB

I would play my favourite formation which is a 4-1-2-1-2.
Gerken
Chambers Berra Smith Cresswell
Skuse CDM
Anderson Hunt-RM,LM
Taylor-CAM/CF
Ebanks-Blake Murphy

Coey118 so you mean a diamond formation?

thebeat added 22:31 - Mar 10
For me its not hard. Anderson, Hunt and Williams in for Tabb, Green and Nouble. Williams as the playmaker with 2 wingers and Skuse mopping up with Taylor and Murph up top. SEB to come on last half hour.
This is Yeovil we are playing, theres no excuse for not playing an attacking team.

But then again who am i kidding, Mick would have a heart attack if he saw that team and formation.
I heard when he plays chess he has 2 rows of pawns.

@WickedBlue As far as I know Berra is a left-sided CB who has been playing as right-sided CB, because our only right-sided CB has been playing RB. Tommy hasn't done anything wrong, it's just that in defence we've had if not square than oval pegs in round holes with Chambers as RB and Berra on the right side. Tommy is, in my opinion, our third best CB, although margins are very small..
