Liddell: Players Will Come Back Fit
Wednesday, 25th Jun 2014 14:17

Fitness coach Andy Liddell expects the Town squad to return to Playford Road in good condition ahead of their 2014/15 pre-season programme. The players are due back at the club on Thursday and Friday for tests with pre-season training starting in earnest on Monday.

Liddell gave each member of the squad a fitness plan to follow during the summer, while some, such as Tyrone Mings and Frank Nouble, who are currently on a course run by Michael Johnson Performance at St George’s Park, have put in additional work.

“The programme is tailored to the individual but basically it’s two weeks’ rest, then building up exercise through the rest of the break,” Liddell explained to the club site.

“Some will do it, some will do their own thing but the players are a good group and I’ll know they will come back fit.

“They will do bleep tests at the end of this week. Last season when we tested them, they ran right through it. The gaffer asked me if we could get the balls out straight away and I said ‘yeah, look at the test results’.

“They came back as fit as I have ever seen any team and that is testament to the players, the manager and TC.

“When you look at the stats last year, we were one of the top three teams in the Championship fitness-wise.

“The manager and TC demand high standards from the players and Ipswich Town run for 90 minutes and beyond, in training and in games.”

The Town squad will be spending a week training at the Carton House hotel in Ireland's County Kildare prior to playing their first friendly against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Dublin on Saturday 12th July. Details of Town’s other pre-season games can be found here.

Meanwhile, Charlton have confirmed that defender Michael Morrison, who was linked with the Blues last week, has signed a new two-year deal at the Valley.

Sounds promising. Am hoping that McGoldrick is 100% fit and has kept his shooting boots! August 9 isn't far away.

Pretty good effort on the drill sergeant look there from Mr Liddell. Throw in a camo uniform and copious cursing and I'd give him at least a B+.

Its a pity then that the league isn't won on fitness levels

The financial situation is what it is, there is no hidden pot of money. The club are doing their best with what they have and if they players are fit that is a good thing. I'm sure we'll see a few new faces come August and a few youngsters making the grade. Mick and TC are doing a great job without spending loads, it's the future and the future is blue and white!!!

Get used to it!

Stretch I am simply channelling my inner moaner, I feel the language used is an accurate reflection and covers all angles, I also feel it makes about as much sense as some of the comments on here (calling other posters natural born losers etc) Now I have said the inevitable everyone can discuss the story and I can listen to a different track ;0

God the moaners on here! Everybody is complaining that we can't have players here and now,do you really care about the preseason friendly with gillingham? Just bear in mind that our top 3 in the SUPPORTERS player of the year award were Mick Mccarthy signings. Rant over

Is anybody here not a troll?

Really encouraging to hear that Mings and Nouble are going the extra mile. Fitness and work ethic are two vital ingredients in this division, it's clear we have plenty of both.

Football has moved on so much in the last few years. Players look after themselves on the most part in the close season and then come back for prr season ready to hit the ground running.

Good to see mings and nouble exploring different avenues to improve their game. Now with frank we need an end product, a goal, or at least a shot on goal that makes the keeper work. Big season for him, as running around aside he doesn't do enough for me.

Not a case of moaning, but for me the lack of activity so far in the transfer market is alarming to say the least. All well and good holding the moral high ground and strictly adhering to FFP when others aren't, but we are standing still whilst others are moving forwards. FFP will only work if the people that are in breach of it ( most notably QPR!!! ) are punished, otherwise we have spent the last 2-3 seasons, preparing for it in the first instance and then following it religiously for no reason at all

This is certainly promising news. I like the desire and have no doubt that the management will have an excellent plan for pre season in place.

But would really have been good if new recruits were available to join in training at the start of pre season. After all we had some new recruits already in place by this time last year, regardless of whether it came into effect on 1 July or nor. The players like Skuse and McGoldrick were there from day one. I seriously hope we become active in the transfer market soon. The last time we left it late and also relied on loans, was the ill fated Jewell era and we know how that ended. Thought ME had learnt from that. Perhaps not.

For F^)K Sake - we are not a wealthy club. We do not have mega millions available for fees or wages. We almost went bust once not so long ago. Yes we all want to be in the Premier League but the good old days of having a genuine equal chance with all the other clubs in the 2nd tier of getting into the top division are long gone. Those coming down should go straight back up if money were all that countered and we know that doesn't always happen so we have to rely on the man in charge and trust he knows what he is doing.
I would be far more concerned that the business side of the club are looking like they will still be charging over the odds for tickets for casual supporters meaning there will be the usual loyal season ticket holders at each home game (no offence intended to those who would love to be there but can't afford a ST or get to Portman Road).
The only thing we supporters can affect is the atmosphere inside the ground on match day the rest is up to MM TC and ME

It goes to show just how little money we have. Let alone us wanting Mick to spend money on transfer fees which we obviously don't have. But mick has come out and said that we don't want to bring players in whether it be on frees or loans before the start of the season as the club we don't want to pay a player 2 months wages before he even plays. For me that is very alarming and if we do sell the likes of Cresswell I can't see that money being made available to Mick but instead going back into the club.

Will be relying on the likes of Tabb, Skuse, Hyam, Wordsworth to show endeavour this season.... Were very average last term...

the reason why we showed to be one of the fittest teams last year was due to the stats, and this was we spent most of the time chasing the ball, rather than retaining it and passing it, we cetainly didnt run with it, defo need some new additions but we need to act fast, and would rather get a few up and coming players in league one than loans from championship clubs, because if they aint good enough for them then they aint good enough for us, but a young prem player on a season long loan would be handy,
