Town Renew Interest in Garvan
Tuesday, 22nd Jul 2014 14:45

Town have renewed their interest in former midfielder Owen Garvan, whose time at Crystal Palace seems certain to come to an end this summer.

In February, TWTD revealed that the Blues were targeting a loan move for the 26-year-old Dubliner, but the proposed deal broke down as the clubs were unable to agree terms regarding the player’s wages.

Now the South London Press is reporting that Town are one of a number of clubs to have shown interest in Garvan, while the former Ireland U21 international has been spotted around town in recent days - one tweeter apparently selling him a new pair of boots on Sunday - and there are further claims that he has been at Playford Road this week.

Garvan came through the academy at Town - he was a member of the 2005 FA Youth Cup-winning squad - before making his debut in August 2005.

After making 134 starts and 40 sub appearances, scoring 15 goals, he moved on to Palace for £250,000 in the summer of 2010 during George Burley’s spell in charge at Selhurst Park.

Contracted until 2015, the Irishman has made 71 starts and 15 sub appearances for the Eagles, scoring 11 goals, but played only three games for Palace last season, all in the opening month of the campaign.

Having been left out of the Eagles’ 25-man Premier League squad, he joined Millwall late on in the season and made 13 appearances. If he were to join the Blues, Palace would either have to settle his contract or continue to pay a large part of his wages and allow him to move on loan.

Garvan was due to play for Palace's development side at Beckenham at the weekend having been left out of the first-team trip to Austria. However, he missed that game due to an ongoing problem with tendinitis in his knee, but wasn't expected to be out of action for long.

Town currently have several players on trial including French frontman Achille Campion, Hungarian striker Bálint Bajner and French-Mauritian midfielder Kévin Bru, while former Reading, Middlesbrough and Swansea frontman Leroy Lita, 29, is also understood to be with the Blues this week.

Boss Mick McCarthy may choose to give some of them a run-out in either tonight’s development squad friendly at Braintree (KO 7.30pm) or Wednesday’s senior game at Colchester (KO 7.45pm).

I for one didn't think we should have let him go in the first place, but that was the Dark Lord for you.

Still I do remember the posts on here when he went. Along the lines of good riddance I believe. Can pick out a pass but too slow, can't tackle, doesn't get forward enough, doesn't get back quickly enough and doesn't score enough goals. Strange how so many people are welcoming him back.

I thought for all his frailties his ability to pick out a defence splitting pass was something we missed after he went and probably not had since. (Bullard loan period apart)

He is a lot more experienced but I guess he hasn't got faster and his tackling/defensive qualities have probably not improved much. I can't see him being the type of player MM looks for.

Not for me thank you. Injury prone, he can't run, cant tackle, can't head a ball but I agree he can pass. Wouldn't have thought he was a MM type player but whatever I will support any player in an ITFC shirt.

Mick, I am appalled by such comments and would expect as manager of our club you would be bigging up the happy clappy brigade who are largely supportive of your methods ;)

On a separate note who would win in a fight between you and Keaneo?

Very much a yes from me to Garvan. The kind of creative central midfielder we need, still quite young, knows the club well and is likely to settle quickly. If the terms are agreeable then what's not to like about this one?

Yes please. Was gutted when he left for so little and he's done okay for Palace. They actually started stuttering during their promotion campaign when Garvan got injured.

Only concern would be that knee.

Certainly better than any of our other midfielders.

According to the EADT (greenun) Lita plays for us against Braintree tonight

As regards Garvan's fitness maybe we could play him in home matches when we're looking to be more creative & attacking with Hyam/Skuse in the away games?

I don't fancy Lita at all. He has failed to reach his potential where ever he has been. As for Garvan my heart would like to see him back at Portman Road because he does have that bit of vision we seem to have been lacking. My concern is his physical state of health. Only Mick and TC can make the decision and I have no doubt they will gather all the evidence and information before making a serious offer to him or Palace. In theory at 26 he should be at the top of his game.

No to Garvan. No better than those currently at the club although better than Hyam.

As for Lita he has the experience especially with both Murphy and McGoldrick not fit - especially McGoldrick who really bothers me as to whether he will be fit enough to even kick a ball!!!

Mmmmm gotta say interested with Garvan but agree with earlier poster that alongside skuse they could be similar and one dimensional but we need to add to limited options in the middle of the park..........lita.........journeyman??? Kinda rings true but if he doesn't want silly money to sign his record at championship level speaks for itself.......looking at Garvan I've been trying to think of an ipswich 11 of former players still playing in the premier and football league......got as far as Jon Walters and Gareth mc cauley, spose cressy could be involved in that now but can anyone help????

As you can guess it would be a definite yes for Garvan from me ,already mentioned it today on the French striker link . Exactly the passing player the team is crying out for who can take the pace out of the game when we are leading ,can create and take set pieces which we have struggled with since he left . Would be another MM step toward undoing all the f**k ups Keane made , how about getting Rhodes ,Mick !!!

Main problem is his fitness for me - has the ability to add something different - we now have natural width and pace so could be good and will def have passion for his original club .
As far as Lita goes - I am concerned about Dids fitness - going to a specialist was an alarm bell - not sure we will see him for some time . Lita - not for me

Certainly not against signing a creative minded midfield player and although I appreciate it's not always the case, but generally speaking in recent years it hasn't worked out with old players returning to their previous clubs. Scowcroft, ambrose dyer and Kuqi spring to mind. Having said that, I would by no means be against a player like Garvan joining us. Doesn't have much pace though and surely concerns over injuries?

Not sure about re signing Garvan tbh....but then again I wasn't sure about Lita either until I saw his goalscoring record from the past 2 seasons, not a bad one (11 goals in 32 apps) could be better and with Ipswich improving on last season he would probably get into double figures :)

As long as he doesn't ask for £20million a week then I could see something happening ;)

NO NO NO . neither Lita or Garvan . Are you honestly telling me this is the best we can do with the cresswell money. ie spend it on has beens and never were's wages . Let them get their pay-offs elsewhere, we have played the benevolent retirement home quite enough over the past few years

AbsolutelyTabbtastic added 18:42 - Jul 22
He would be better than who we currently have in centre mid.

blueboy1981 added 19:09 - Jul 22
Hope it doesn't happen but Garvan is a typical early retiree due to his apparent ongoing knee problems.

A fit Owen Garvan would definitely be a bonus to our midfield, and certainly add a bit of creativity (with a simple telling pass) which we seriously lack - I would have doubts on two counts about this :

1. Fitness.
2. Being industrious enough for MM.

Much talent - but all very debatable - so I sit on the fence with this one for once.

blueboy1981 added 19:13 - Jul 22
............ BUT - surely we wouldn't sign him if there was doubt about his Fitness - Would we ??

His knee is a worry and even though I like the lad I cant see him fitting in to this team, To get the best out of Garvan, he needs time and space on the ball. He is not an all action player and he can slow the game up when ball comes his way. Not the type of player for counter attacking- Wordsworth is a better option.

In fairness to Garvan and any other midfielder we are linked with, they will be compared to Joniesta.

I've never been a fan of his, awkward running style and hasn't got pace.
Only plus with him is he can strike a dead ball and that's about it.
(Might as well enquire about Tommy Miller) he's looking for a club!

That Mauritian Kévin Bru looks to have more to his game (Seen video) and no question marks of being injury prone

Please God no! Never impressed with him and nor I was with Dozzell. Both highly overrated. Both marmite players. McCarthy would never put up with Garvins work ethic!

Would love to see Garvan back but cant see it happening,if we do get him and Lita in we have a really good solid squad that should challenge and its up to Mick to get the best out of them
