Town XI Win at Sudbury
Tuesday, 5th Aug 2014 22:07 by James Ager

A young Town XI recorded a 4-2 victory over AFC Sudbury at the Wardale Williams Stadium on Tuesday evening with Darren McQueen, Jack Marriott, Paul Taylor and Matt Clarke all on the scoresheet. The Blues side included trialists Patrick Antelmi and Richard Bryan.

Free agent Australian Antelmi, 20, who played on the left of midfield despite primarily being a striker, joined Wigan on an 18-month deal last December following his release by Leeds when Charlton, Blackburn and Wolves were also reportedly interested. He was released this summer and recently played for Crawley on trial.

Born in Perth, Antelmi, who is yet to make a first team appearance, was with Portsmouth’s youth set-up prior to his spell at Elland Road.

Central defender Bryan, also a 20-year-old free agent, came through Aston Villa’s academy before being released in the summer of 2012.

A Republic of Ireland international at U16, U17 and U19 levels, Bryan spent time on trial at Leeds last season.

Mark Kennedy's side took the lead after 17 minutes when Marriott forced keeper Alex Archer to produce a good save, but McQueen was quickest to react and slotted the ball home.

Within two minutes the hosts were level when Ryan Henshaw powered Lee Flynn's corner past Michael Crowe.

Marriott put Town back ahead on 56 after finding himself one-on-one with Archer, before Taylor beat a number of Sudbury players and hit a 20-yard shot into the bottom corner seven minutes later.

Within a couple of minutes, skipper Clarke had headed home the fourth from Teddy Bishop's left-sided corner.

The hosts pulled a goal back on 77 when Lawrence Yiga bundled the ball in from close range after Town had failed to deal with Flynn's free-kick.

McQueen thought he'd added another for Town late on with another precise finish, but he was flagged offside and the final whistle came soon after.

Neither Bryan or Antelmi particularly stood out during the first half in front of watching boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor and both were replaced at the break.

Transfer-listed Taylor looked lively but appeared to pick up a knock in the second half, while youngsters Bishop and Clarke impressed throughout.

Town XI: Crowe, Robinson, Wyatt, Bru (Willbye 72), Bryan (Sowunmi 46) Clarke, McQueen, Bishop, Marriott (Patterson 78), Taylor (Galvin 66), Antelmi (Lawrence 46). Unused: McDermid. Att: 718.

Looks like Taylor has found his level. Probably similarto Belgian second division.

Don't know how Taylor can be bothered. He must be desperate to get away. Don't blame him. Last time he started at home got a standing ovation and MoM. Dropped for next home game.

I wish MM would tell us exactly what he doesn't like about Taylor. Looking at our squad we need him desperately for creativity, each time I watch him I only see good things....what is going on in training!?

looks like the u21 is going to be frees loans and trialists, what has happened to the youth policy at Ipswich?

Why should Mick lower himself to that level! I'll quite happily lower the tone for Mick thou and say that Taylor is clearlu an A**hole as his ability isn't in doubt! Surely we all get this now!!!

Exactly I can't understand the feud he has with Taylor, at the end of the day it's personal between him and mick and they should just put that to the side and do what's best for the team and play him, alongside McGoldrick he is our most creative player, can play a number of positions, and when he's played he's been one of the hardest working out there and constantly tracking back for the team. MM always highlights that he doesn't work hard when every one else can see that he does.

How did the trialists do? another Centre half would be a worthy addition as someone said in an thread earlier

For gods sake stop going on about Taylor. He's on the transfer list. Who cares why MM doesn't rate him. I have seen him play a few times. He is very ordinary and just not big or strong enough for Championship. Lets move on.

Christ on a bike, Taylor could have scored 7 in a 7 nil win and he wouldn't get a sniff.

Mcarthy hates him, he must be a real arse.

why on earth did we pay £1.5 million for Taylor?

As said above, Taylor has ability. But the guy is clearly not fancied. I've seen him out on the lash (last season...) He obviously has little respect for the club or MM... Annnnnd he doesn't pass/isn't a team player! Mick has gotten rid of all of the bad apples, the ones with attitude, like Chops, Martin and the rest - gone. MM likes honest hard working pros who all get on well with one another.
Give Marriott some game time this season.
Bring on Saturday.

I care why McCarthy doesn't rate him. And I care why McCarthy doesn't rate anyone who isn't a talentless, hard working donkey. He doesn't know how to work with flair… Which is exactly why we will see dire mid-table cr*p again this year. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! Mick out ASAP

I used to work with a Scot, the biggest p_sshead on the planet, would come to work smelling like a brewery, he stunk! he was an out and out arse, but christ he was good at his job, the best welder i have ever seen, could cut and shut any pipework as if it was second nature and it was!. As a fitter to work alongside i would pick him everytime!
Now we have a player, he has bags of skill, flair, can create something from nothing, twist and turn and put defenders in all sorts of a mess, just what we are crying out for.....
Transfer listed!! nuff said!

It makes you wonder if Taylor thinks he's too big for the club without ever doing much here partly because of his injury, he always seems committed and works hard in games,at colchester I thought he passed it a lot, played as a team player and was very unselfish which is what most assume is mm reason for not liking him! I have no problem with him getting rid of taylor. But when we are lacking creativity and have jay tabb competing for a spot on the left wing, I feel it is unnessacary if it is indeed personal. I know Taylor can't play on the left wing but he can play on the right and Anderson or henshall could play on the left. I defend McCarthy with the majority of his decisions but I think he is wrong on this one, with the lack of quality competition available for our budget.

Taylor has done nothing for us , i fail to see a team player , he has individual soil but cant pass or wont pass. He is a div 1 player

I've seen some stupid posts on twtd.... but bring back chopra? I do hope this was a joke? The bloke is utterly over-rated and not the sort of role model or even player we need pulling a blue shirt on.

Please stop going on about Taylor. He is on the transferlist, he won't play for the first team again, every time I have seen him play he plays for himself and not for the team and the sooner he is gone the better. He is the kind of player who makes one really good move in 25 and get a lot of people excited about that, but then makes the wrong decision the other 24 times.
The bottomline for me is: he isn't good and consistent enough to be in the team. And that's without taking anything else than his football into account.

Walk_the_Wark - McCarthy REALLY hates creative players. Never ever started Jarvis, O'Hara or Kightly when he took Wolves up. And they have had a whale of a time since Mick left them.....

Idiot

Taylor ain't anything special, so all of you fanboys can shut up and leave the issue well alone now. Starting to get a wee bit boring. As for the complaints about style of football? Would you rather pretty passes and 7pts off of anyone else á la Paul Jewell, or organisation and functional football that had us challenging the playoff spots?

Binner added 08:41 - Aug 6
Yes, Luka.

MM did a terrible job when he took Wolves up. They should've sacked him right there and then...

Wussingwhiteboots, what a stupid comment, I rather think this is the level MM should be working at

It's a shame that a lot here seem to prefer style over substance.

Bryan was captain of Leeds reserves and has recently been on trial at Bradford. Seen him a couple of times and while he looked ok not sure if he's Championship first team level yet

If you sling enough mud at a wall, some of it must stick. If you try enough trialists, maybe one or two might make it?
