McCarthy: Good Win Against Good Team
Saturday, 13th Sep 2014 18:56

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted to see his side get back to winning ways with a 2-0 home victory over Millwall.

“It was a very good win against a good team,” he said. “We got away with one that hit the crossbar. I think they're a good team.

“Somebody asked me why we started slowly, but I didn’t think we did, I thought they were good.

“But we grew into the game and when we got the goal I thought in the second half we were by far the better team.”

McCarthy felt David McGoldrick’s opening goal in first-half injury time couldn’t have come at a better moment.

“I keep saying I’m not so sure there’s ever a bad time to score, but it certainly changed the dynamic of the dressing room,” he said.

“I wasn’t unhappy with the way were going about it but I was a lot happier when we went in.

“Ollie would have been having conceded because they were the better team in the first half, certainly for the first half hour.”

He added: “I wouldn’t say I was happy [to sit back in the first half] but because their two full-backs rampage forward there’s always room to catch them on the break.

“We trained accordingly this week and we actually did catch them on the break because they were having a corner and we’ve speared them from their corner kick.

“If they’re very attack-minded, which Ollie’s teams are, they can leave themselves a bit bare at the back but nevertheless it was still a very good, well-worked goal.”

The Blues boss was pleased with Daryl Murphy’s second just after the hour, having been less than impressed with Town’s set pieces up to then.

“I was livid at half-time about our corner kicks because if you keep chipping them into the keeper’s hands you can’t score from them,” he continued.

“And actually, it wasn’t a great corner kick, but it didn’t go in the keeper’s hands and strangely enough we scored off it, somebody got a header on it.

“I was none-too-pleased with our freekick and corner kick delivery, the keeper kept catching them. That proves it, doesn’t it? If it doesn’t go in the keeper’s hands you can score.”

Neither McGoldrick nor Tyrone Mings showed any signs of sulking having been denied Premier League moves on deadline day, McCarthy felt.

“Tyrone was different class,” he said. “I’d had a nip at his ears about him playing safe because he was, but he wasn’t safe today, was he? He was rampaging up and down.

“Their full-backs are particularly good at doing that and I said to ours that I wanted them to be better than theirs and I thought Tyrone was the pick of the bunch. His back had stiffened up, we’ll see how he is. Hopefully he’s OK.

“[David McGoldrick was] another one that played properly despite the disappointment. I keep being asked ‘How is he?’. I keep saying ‘He’s great, he’s fine, he’s trained really well’ and that proved it today, he was excellent again.”

McCarthy admitted it was difficult leaving out Tommy Smith - “very much so” - and also Luke Hyam: “That was one of the hardest decisions leaving him out because he’s been a stalwart in the team, but he took it in the right way and he was excellent when he came on.”

Millwall manager Ian Holloway admitted that Town deserved to win the match and was disappointed with his team’s second half performance.

“We weren’t as good as Ipswich today,” he said. “At the end of the day it didn’t look like our team, did it? You’ve got to give credit to Mick’s team, how difficult it is to break them down.”

Holloway revealed that he had only six subs on the bench as keeper Tom King was inadvertently missed off the official teamsheet with referee Carl Berry refusing to allow his late addition to the list, much to the Lions’ boss’s annoyance.

He added that his squad had arrived 15 minutes late at the game having travelled from their hotel 20 miles away as his team-talk had overrun.

Have to say that although we won 2-0 and secured the 3 points I thought milwall were good on the ball and moved it round really well, as all ollies teams tend to do. If we could add that to our game it would bring fans back through the gate. Love ollie to bits, such an infectious character and passionate bout the game. Would love it if he'd have got the town job instead of magilton, but hey ho

He picked the team didn't he,? including bishop, i know he is a good prospect but continually saying he is the best thing since sliced bread may not be the best thing for the lad, he needs to keep his feet on the ground.

Sorry I thought we were poor today, we were lucky we scored when we did, as Millwall passed off the pitch first half. The problem is Skuse, and Tabb are not up to it. Should be Henshall and Hyam in Tuesday, I would play Stewart when fit as Anderson isn't much better!
But as we know Mick plays his Favourites. Least He stuck We Bishop and Mings also played well.

Really excited about bishop. He wasn't mom today but so comfortable on the ball and always positive. Would hate for a Williams type loan player to come in & restrict his playing time. Big thumbs to mm for playing him & mings, future could be bright.

Have to agree both Tyrone Mings and Bishop did make a difference on the pitch and that Tabb and Skuse were awful. I would like to see the youngsters getting a chance. It gives them confidence and it also gives the other youngsters in the academy the motive to work harder and see that there can be a reward.

while I agree wholeheartedly that mings(mom) and bishop stood out, anyone saying tabb, skuse, Anderson were rubbish, is talking rubbish. no, they may not have contributed a lot to the attacking side of the game)other than Anderson, who provided a few decent crosses and runs), but the defensive work they got through, particularly tabb, was tremendous. skuse wasn't great 1st half, but better 2nd half(but then same could be said for the team in general)/ and Anderson ran himself into the ground, was absolutely shattered when he went off. I know that kind of thing isn't always appreciated by many but it is a very important part of the game, and vital to achieving 3 points. does seem that some people just cant post on here without criticising some1 and I don't feel that overall there is any cause to do so about todays match. okay, yes, the football wasn't scintillating(and wont br while mm is the manager). but all in all, a decent performance and a great result. and that's all that should matter.

Whosroundisitanyway you're talking waffle fella. Cant ask for anything more than a win and 3 points!!! I was merely remarking, as others have done, that milwall were good on the ball and passed it well. Mick is doing a great job with what he's got. I also rate holloway as a manager, why does that warrant you telling me to go and support milwall??

dont quite know whats wrong with whosroundisitanyway telling people to not bother commeting and go and support millwall.
I hate mcarthy and his long ball negative style but i dont tell his supporters to go and support somebody else or stop commenting.
it is possible to win 2-0 and still have been able to do some things better. there are alot stronger teams in this league and that performance would not have been good enough against some of them.the better team we play the more they will punish us when they have the ball and we give possesion of the ball away too cheaply.its a good home 3 points but we need not get carried away as we should expect to beat millwall at home

Sorry but you had nothing good to say about Town in that posting,
just singing the praises of a side & manager that we beat 2-0 !!
How about some of you people making positive comments about Ipswich Town,
their players, & more importantly their manager???

Much better team yesterday and a good balance. Two full backs who can get forward, only one holding player, bishop attacking down the middle and making things happen, Tabb playing really well again, goals from both strikers... just so many positives.

How anybody who watched the game could be negative about us goodness only knows, either they didn't go or they are so used to whining that they can't break the habit. No we weren't sublime, but the way we have played in the last two games has been a massive step forward. If we keep playing this way we will only get better. Finally we see Stage 2 from Mick, real hope now that we can break into the top 6.

Interesting that Mick has broken the Chambers/Smith/Berra defensive unit up and I have wondered when he would do this with the introduction of Parr this summer - in the long term this might well benefit Town, Parr is pretty solid and Mings adds that bit more flair on the other side. Personally feel the position of Skuse is most in doubt currently and would like to see Hyam come in for him on Tuesday.
As mentioned above in another post re: Millwall - I would expect us to beat them at home, they have started the season reasonably well but their not a team with a lot of well known players, Holloway has got them playing quite good deck football but we have the odd quality player in our starting 11 they don't have and I think that's the difference.

Whosroundisitanyway I said the most positive thing of all and that was that we won 2-0. Im a town fan, but appreciate good football, no matter who its played by!!! Take the time to read my post on the actual match report, believe you me that is more than positive

Plus if you read the original post I actually said that mick is doing a great job with what he's got, surely thats positive towards our club and its manager!!! Mick also commented on the fact milwall were a good side andwere better than us in the first half, which was evident. We improved inthe 2nd half and deserved to win 2-0 which is all that matters. Dunno what your problem is. If ya gonna call me out, read my posts properly!!!
