Williams Set for Town Return
Saturday, 27th Sep 2014 20:36

TWTD understands that Crystal Palace’s Jonny Williams is due at Town on Monday to formalise a second loan spell with the Blues.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful stint with Town towards the end of last season, scoring one goal in 11 starts and two sub appearances.

While manager Mick McCarthy played down the likelihood of a further addition to his squad at his post-match press conference, earlier in the day, speaking Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch, MD Ian Milne hinted that a deal was close.

“Watch this space,” Milne said. Pressed further on whether a new signing could be on the cards, he added: “Just wait and see, but, yes, I think so. I’m not going to say who.”

Williams was left out of Palace’s 18 for their 2-0 home win against Leicester today, having played the first 80 minutes of their Capital One Cup defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday.

The midfielder has been tipped for a loan move to the Blues or another of a number of interested Championship clubs since the summer, but new manager Neil Warnock had been keen to take a look at the Wales international before sending him out for a spell.

Outside the transfer window Championship clubs are permitted to take players on loans of up to 93 days.

Warnock has confirmed that Williams’s long-term future is at Selhurst Park with his contract running until the summer of 2018.

great (potentia) signing, especially considering many fans (including myself) were bemoaning our lack of creativity in the middle during the summer. Hyam, skuse, collison, williams and (hopefully) bishop are all quality players for this division. Full faith in our management for the first time in a while and we have striker that actually score goals! :P Interesting to see how our wide players (anderson, henshall and stewart etc) will fit in to this side but I'm not complaining! I definitely thought that town fans had this kid of unhealthy obsession with a player who'd never come back (like another dos santos) but you really can't disagree with the idea to bring him back.

That said, we're flying right now. If I was MM, I'd leave Williams out for the first couple of games, let Teddy Bish know he's for a chance to keep his (deserved) place in the team.

all we need now is a 4th striker - Bajner is NOT the answer!

Am I the only one that thinks Bishop will keep his place anyway? I think MM will drop Sammon to the bench, Murphy & McGoldrick up front, Williams playing just behind? :)

Adding Joniesta to what we currently have will give us a squad very capable of challenging at the top of this division. Well done to all concerned

Wow, Williams playing in central midfield would be a great addition. Midfield options looking good! Tabb and Anderson may well be worried.

This is fantastic news, Williams could be the last piece of the puzzle (up until January that is) and alongside a fully fit McGoldrick, a Teddy Bishop that's on fire right now, Hyam that's in good form, and more, we have such a spark and potential 'it' factor. Times are good right now in the Portman Road camp, lets keep it up!!

Amazed people say we don't need Joniesta, granted we'll have an Arsenalesque number of midfielders but really Bru/Anderson etc over Williams - you're having a laugh. Could be the final part of the jigsaw along with the revamped back 4. If he can strike up a partnership with Didz the quality football will be back at PR.

I'm beginning to like the season more and more ....

It's all falling into place. I just hope it happens and he is here for a long stint.

Regarding Bishop however, Mick said that Teddy wont be playing 40 odd games a season, if Williams comes, they might do a game about, OR we can drop maybe Sammon and play Williams behind Murph and McGoldrick. There's lots of things we can do with him

MM knows what he's doing and Teddy Bishop will never be far from the team I would think he'd be on the bench most games. This could be an amazing season. COYB

Reading this news, I am an ten-year-old again. I thought we had lost the chance to see Williams and McGoldrick play together in the same team. I am overjoyed at his return.

After years of muddle/incompetence/struggle/mediocrity I'm starting to feel happy again. This is a very good day.

Okay, he did brilliantly for us while Mcgoldrick was out last season, and I'm sure that he'd do well for us again. But we have Wordsworth we can call back, Hyam (who is now becoming an attacking yet solid midfielder), Bishop, Bru etc, and they are all ours. So surely we should play our own players and talent? Like Bishop, he could be a brilliant player, yet we are bringing in other teams talent?!
Even though he's a good player, our players should be priority.

thought bru was awful today. all sideways backwards and lightweight, he did nothing but skuse has been poor. williams is the real deal.

Bru and bajner -what did mick see in them

some real moments of class from Williams last year- Excited by the thought of him teaming up with McGoldrick

Hope he has learnt to stay on his feet a bit more

Been waiting to hear this. Joniesta not playing. The silence was deafening. When it all goes quiet, you know something is happening. i

As has already been said on this site - a few games ago I would be very excited about this but my fear now is that Bishop will be sidelined just when he is showing real class. I have no doubt some will disagree with me and I accept Bishop is young and needs nurturing and looking after and all that stuff but he is one of our own and Williams for all his class and ability will not be here next season - in fact if Warnock decides he wants him back he will be gone.
Given how MM & TC have got the squad playing recently I put my trust in them I just don't want to see own own players disappear through lack of opportunity, particularly one as obviously talented as Bishop
