McCarthy: Feels Like a Defeat
Sunday, 5th Oct 2014 18:54

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted that the Blues 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest felt more like a defeat but says that it will seem like a better result once he’s further away from the heat of the action.

“It’s one of those draws where I’m usually proud of the performance and was thoroughly deserved,” said McCarthy.

“If it comes at 35 minutes and ends two-all we come off thinking ‘What a great point’. But coming in injury time if feels a bit like a defeat.

“But it won’t when I sum it up in my head, which I’ve already started doing. We’ve got 19 points, in the last seven games we’ve had four wins and three draws, it’s a great return. Would I have taken that from the last seven games? Absolutely, of course I would.

“It’s lovely. It’s a good run of form. I’m very pragmatic about that. Would I have taken that? We’ve beaten Wigan, we’ve drawn at Derby, we’ve had points off some of the good teams.”

He says he would have taken the point going into the game if it had been offered to him beforehand: “I wouldn’t have bothered getting on the bus, I’d have taken it if they’d said ‘Don’t bother, we’ll stay where we are’.

“I think there’ll be a lot of people who will see these as somebody who could win it, champions elect. Certainly promotion elect.

“These will be looking at the top two with the squad they’ve got and the money they’ve spent. I think they’re capable of it, to be fair, when they get everybody back.”

McCarthy wasn’t happy the Blues conceded two goals from set pieces: “Of course, but Stuart will be disappointed that their full-back gets done and Murph comes and slams it in the bottom corner and he wins a header.

“I’ve never come off yet and thought ‘That’s a nice goal the opposition scored’ and it doesn’t feel any different now.”

Regarding Murphy he said: “Two great goals from a striker who is in form and probably playing as well as he ever has in his career.”

He says Jonny Williams was tiring when he was replaced approaching the hour mark: “Jonny ran out of gas a bit. That’s because he’s not been playing.

“Let me tell you, that game was played at a helluva pace that game was played at, physical and tough and demanding.

“You can’t just come from being a sub [and play 90 minutes]. If you come in there you end up with cramp, you end up knackered, that was played at a helluva pace for both teams.”

Luke Hyam went off in the first half but the Blues boss isn’t yet sure of the extent of his injury: “I don’t know if it’s his hip flexor, which he’s had a bit of niggle with, or his hamstring, I don’t know.”

As for Paul Anderson, who missed out having suffered an injury in training on Friday, he says his problem isn’t serious: “His hamstring just tightened up.”

He added: “Overall, I’m very proud of the performance and pleased with the way we’ve played. It’s just when the goal comes. It’s happened, I can’t do anything about it now.

“So, I’ll wipe my gob, take the point, be delighted with it, go home, have a break like the rest of the lads and we’ll start again next Monday.”

Forest manager Stuart Pearce thought his side might have claimed all three points had they scored an earlier equaliser: “We had a game today where Ipswich came on good form, four victories and a draw in their last five games.

“They’re a well-organised team. Anyone Mick is in charge of you know exactly what you’re going to to get.

“I thought it was a real blood and thunder game that swung from end to end. I’m disappointed it took us so long to get the equaliser because I thought we’d win it, certainly on the chances we created in the second half.

“But their goalkeeper made some outstanding stops and when he wasn’t there, defenders scooped things off the line. It was a real cup final of a Championship game.”

Town are 17/1 to win the league.

Went to the game today and although it was gut wrenching to concede so late on I think we really made them work for it. Murphy is in the form of his life and is far out shining Mcgoldrick, who tried to hard today against his old team and didnt have a good game as a result. Mings was brilliant in the first half, but needs to learn not to always follow the ball, as got caughtout a few times when forest upped it. We will be there or there abouts come the end of the season though for sure and the progression we have made is outstanding. Drawing 2-2 with a decent side with massive playing budget is not a disgrace. Shame we couldnt quite get over the line, but certainly proud to be a blue!!!

Two great goals scored, two scruffy goals conceded, both from corners? Still a brilliant performance by a Town team that is at last making us supporters feel proud. Just as a coaching note regarding defending corners, surely it is better to have a proven scorer like Murphy standing on the halfway line, it would then normally see two defenders having to stay back and then give us a numerical advantage to defend the kick?

Very well done Mick and every player, of course we're all very disappointed with that late goal, it's such a pity, however we can see where our main weakness lies, we must concentrate on defending those corners, they are costing us, get that right and we'll have a massive chance of success this season.

went to the game.
great atomosphere and support from fans.
mings immense first half.
didz was poor throughout.
murphy wiht 2 great goals.
shame williams went off.
whole team gave their all but sloppy goals and painful to concecde so late.
the thing is we seem scared to carry on attacking when we go in front, i know forest are a good team but for the 1st 55 mins we totally bossed it.
we invited pressure and it was inevitble they would score.
regarding skuse can anyone tell me what he does? im not saying he doest give effort but a centre midfielder has to do more, he hasnt scored yet, barely creates a chance let alone an assist, cant shoot, doesnt take people on, if we had another williams standard centre midfielder then we really could go up.
just my view peoples!

Oldegold I completely disagree with your negative views on the game and indeed our performance! Can you please explain to me how we invite the opposition to attack us! Do we give their Captain a written invitation or could it be that our players have worked so bloody hard that energy levels are bound to drop during the last 20 minutes!

Shows how far we have come, away to probably strongest side in the league and we are (understandably) disappointed at a draw.
If we can keep going for another month like this we could be part of a group of 7-8 teams who are already beginning to break away from rest. Then if we can push on, who knows where we can end up?
Saturday's other results were amazing- 5 of our rivals dropped home points v lower opposition.
Next up i think only us of top 8 are at home.

JWM..If you read my view on the game you will see that I thought we played a very good match and considering that we outplayed Forest, overall, my point was that it was going to be completely predictable that MM would send everyone in defense to defend the lead in the last quarter o an hour and pass the initiative to them rather than boss the match as we more or less did. We should have put the match beyond their reach but MM had to rely on his time-worn tactic of defending the advantage. That was my point and to take nothing away from a fine performance.

Gutted to concede with virtually last kick of game, but would have definitely taken a point before kick off as good as we are playing. After the Norwich game I didn't think we would be in top 6 six games later the way we played,so it can be only positives - playing well, scoring, not conceding too many....... The future looks bright.COME ON YOU BLUES.

At the moment we only conceed goals from corners, it's not like it's the aspect of our defending that needs the most work, it's currently the only aspect that needs work! I'm not sure if records are kept on this but I make it (Assuming an average 95 minutes of play per match) that we are 8 minutes short of 11 hours since we last conceeded in open play. Back against Derby if you can remember!

"Forest manager Stuart Pearce thought his side might have claimed all three points had they scored an earlier equaliser"

you mean when you got the 1-1 and went on to go 2-1 down
