Leeds United striker Billy Sharp has revealed that the Whites were willing to allow him to join the Blues when Town made a loan approach for him last month.

However, the 28-year-old didn’t think he’d play regularly if he moved to Portman Road with Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick firmly established as the front two.

On Saturday, Sharp came on as an 87th minute sub and netted a dramatic final minute winner to hand Leeds a 2-1 win at Huddersfield.

“Leeds said I could have gone [to Ipswich] but I don’t want to leave,” Sharp told the Yorkshire Evening Post. “I’m settled here. It’s a great club and I want to score goals for Leeds.

“Ipswich have two good strikers and I wouldn’t have played much so I didn’t want to leave. But I am a professional footballer and I do want to play more.

“I’ve not scored anywhere near as many goals as I’d like to have done. I have not played as much either. But the fans have stuck by me and that one was for them.

“I’ve scored a few goals in my career and I fancy my chances of getting in the right place at the right time. I’m buzzing that I helped win a game.”

To be honest, we've ended up with Sears instead - a much cheaper option I would imagine, he's ours permanently, and I can't really imagine there would be that much between them in terms of quality (Sharp's experience will be balanced out by Sears' hunger).

SouperJim added 10:41 - Feb 2 Despite what Sharp says about wanting to play more, if he won't swap a club languishing at the wrong end of the table where he is surplus to requirements, for one challenging at the top end of the table who actually want him, then he clearly lacks ambition and isn't the kind of player we want here anyway. Surely the club who actually want you are likely to play you more? We want players who will jump at the chance to claim a place in our team and perhaps be playing premier league football next season. I don't mean to judge Sharp too harshly as he has a settled family and is clearly a northern lad, but we had too many "comfort zone" players under Jewell and they get you absolutely nowhere.

Murphy and Sears, with McGoldrick just behind, and Bishop passing the ball to them, would probably work well. Not the style though, we have to workers to stop the opposition before we consider them worrying about us. Starting with Sears and Bishop on the bench on Saturday was a big mistake.

blueherts added 11:41 - Feb 2 Of course Leeds wanted rid, he is on big money. Plenty of examples of clubs 'risking' and gambling Bournemouth are a club on the up. We are a club punching above our weight and MM loves it. I still think we will get JW which will be a huge boost for all. Sears Stewart and Bishop need to feature though as they have the added ability. Go unbeaten in Feb and happy days

My worry has always been that we've got poor midfield and stats prove that we can't keep the ball long enough to control the game. Murphy has ben great but without him MM tactics look rubbish so the addition of JW would be great BUT....... I'm beginning to feel that ME lacks ambition and would off-load Town if good offer came along. He must see what's happening and given the position we're in surely he would want to give MM the means to push on.

blues1 added 12:42 - Feb 2 some people need to think before they start criticising sharp for this. he wants to play more so why would he move all the way down here(albeit prob staying in a hotel neway), just to sit on our bench. especially as he says, he is settled there. sure if he thought hed paly regularly hed have been here like a shot. and bluefeast, he would have been paid the same money if hed come here on loan so money nothing to do with it.

He would be a very useful player to have in the squad, but the reality is he as likely to get as much/more game time with Leeds as he is with us. The Sears deal was going through anyway, plus Noel Hunt (he's a striker Jas, sometimes has been played on the wing, but definitely a striker) has arrived & is doing well - so it's not just Murphy & McGoldrick that he would be vying with for a starting place.
