Quiet Deadline Day Expected
Thursday, 26th Mar 2015 09:41

Deadline day is expected to pass quietly at Portman Road with manager Mick McCarthy not thought to be looking to add further to his squad. Football League clubs have until 5pm today to bring players in on emergency loans.

Town will announce the extensions of Luke Varney and Richard Chaplow’s loans until the end of the season, the pair having initially signed for a month with a break put in their spells so that they could remain at the club until after the play-offs.

The South London Press is reporting that the Blues, Fulham, Wolves and Watford have made enquiries to Crystal Palace regarding former loanee Jonny Williams, but the Wales international is not expected to rejoin Town today.

As previously reported, the Blues would have been able to re-sign the 21-year-old for the period of his previous loan spell which was remaining after he got injured if the Football League had given dispensation - and the club have confirmed that they did seek clarification that this was the case - but the midfielder only returned to first team training recently and the Blues are understood not to have pursued their interest.

McCarthy has brought in Varney, Chaplow and Chris Wood on emergency loans in the last few weeks, while Luke Hyam and David McGoldrick are close to returning from knee and thigh injuries respectively and could be involved in the squad for the Bournemouth game on Good Friday.

It is possible that there could be moves in the other direction with fringe players such as Alex Henshall available for loan.

Already this week winger Cameron Stewart has joined Barnsley and keeper Michael Crowe Woking.

Elsewhere, Arsenal defender Semi Ajayi, who was on trial with the Blues and played a game for the U21s in January, has joined Cardiff City on loan. The 21-year-old is set to leave the Gunners in the summer.

Midfielder Jack Collison, who spent a short spell with Town earlier in the season without making a senior appearance, is again reported to be set to join the MK Dons.

Watford sign Williams? - He could visit Ekstrand in hospital.
By the way, we sometimes dismiss the opposition view as completely blinkered but this match report that a Hornet's fan friend of mine sent me is outstanding, both for the quality of writing and the sensible, perceptive analysis of the game on Saturday. Even the comments have value - something we could aim for?

It's a pity we couldn't sign a top young player to underline our seriousness about a real push for promotion, but at least Chaplow and Varney's stock has risen after their Watford performances.

We cant sign him ,so off to wolves he will go , i have to say i really hope not ,he is a player who would make a significant difference in the play off race , but we have spirit and fight , that may well just get us there. COYB

To be fair he may also go to Derby , they have not quite gone bankrupt just yet so another 20k per week may just do the trick

So in other words.... Marcus Evans lied about spending big money on a loan if we stayed within the top 6. I hope we do sign someone though

Have you considered the very real possibility that Mick has decided not to bring anyone in and to stick with the players he has for the last 7-10 games?

Bitterly disappointing. Wish ME would just release a statement to clarify the situation. It's pretty obvious we have a small squad and injuries, yet despite in with a shout of promotion, there seems a reluctance to top the squad up. We only have a handful of defenders, and still lack a creative spark in the midfield. A Williams type player, or a Pacey winger.

I'll be disappointed if we fail to sign players again, especially after a lack of activity in January. Do the club want promotion? A midfielder a must. Also, ME reported to only spend if we are still in contention. We are. So where is the backing Marcus?

If I am right in saying ME was only claimed to have said this by a certain paper, which many doubted at the time to be correct - as what would be the point in him saying it?

Also, why would he spend money on a squad which is currently in 6th with a handful of games left. Surely the argument is the current squad have got us in this position, so why shouldn't it keep us there. I will be delighted if we did bring someone in, but won't be gutted if we don't.

jas0999. if u read the star you will find that ME was willing to release money for a loan signing but MM has decided against it, and to go with what hes got. and it has to be said, our squad is no smaller than the majority of squads in the division. yes, weve had a few injuries, but most of those have now cleared up, and we now also have Hewitt back for the rest of the season too.

With Hyam, mcgoldrick and elliot Hewitt all returning, the need for anymore signings is reduced significantly.

Can people stop citing that bloody newspaper article about Evans only releasing funds based on whatever or whatnot. There is no truth in it, as the club have already said.

Mick could still surprise us;but have added 9 since turn of year to replace 9 that have gone out either on loan or transferred/paid up;so still a smallish squad but not paper thin.

Extensions of Varney and Chaplow's loans say to me that we will not get any further players in - hopefully some how we'll get Jonny again (but I doubt it). 'quiet deadline day' has become the norm at this club for the last couple of seasons.
