Cardiff End Murphy Pursuit
Monday, 22nd Jun 2015 14:11

Cardiff City are reported to have ended their interest in signing Blues striker Daryl Murphy.

The Bluebirds were previously said to have the Irish international at the top of their summer wish list but now, according to Wales Online, they are turning their attention elsewhere with the Blues said to be asking more than £4 million for the 32-year-old.

Town's 27-goal Championship top scorer has been the subject of much speculation since the end of the season with West Brom, Leicester and Norwich all linked on Sunday, while Stoke manager Mark Hughes is also understood to be weighing up making a move.

Earlier this month, Championship Middlesbrough were claimed to have had a £2.5 million offer turned down.

Newly-relegated Burnley and QPR as well as Fulham have also been mentioned in connection with the Waterford-born frontman, along with the other demoted former Premier League team Hull City, who were previously linked in January.

Manager Mick McCarthy and owner Marcus Evans have both said that they are determined to keep hold of the Blues' key players this summer, while Murphy has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of leaving Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk.

Whether that would change should any of the reportedly interested Premier League clubs firm up their interest remains to be seen.

The former Waterford, Sunderland and Celtic frontman signed a new contract with Town last July, which has another year left to run with the Blues having an option to extend it for a further season.

Meanwhile, Southend manager Phil Brown has confirmed that midfielder Anthony Wordsworth, who was released by Town at the end of the season, is amongst the players he wants to sign this summer.

“It's true that [ex-Leyton Orient striker] David [Mooney] and Anthony are two of the players we're after,” he told the Southend Echo.

“I think they are exactly the type of players we need here and hopefully we can bring them in.”

This story is gonna run and run, he will be linked with lots of clubs yet as will Mings and probably McGoldrick. I hope they all stay, we get another striker in and a couple of attacking/scoring midfielders and go 1 step further next season! #weareIpswich

It will be impossible for Championship teams to sign Murphy because we're in the same league. Our only threat would be the mid/relegation teams in the Prem like Stoke and West Brom. However, I am 99% sure Murphy will stay.

Good. Hopefully a week of positive stories. Maybe a couple of signings and a few more clubs dropping out of the running. That would suit nicely.

What a non story this has been. Cardiff reportedly end interest in a player they were rumoured to be looking at.

We need to give Murphs an improved deal so we can put this story to bed once and for all.

They ended their fictional interest.

If Norwich are serious with their interest I can't see Murphy turning them down, he has nothing to be loyal to us about giving the abuse he received from many before his turn around in form and he wouldn't have to move his settled family.

I don't think he was ever going to go to Cardiff anyway. I doubt we'd sell to another Championship side. I've said all along if we get £4m+ then I'd probably accept it though. I just hope he can maintain the same levels as last year. At least we have Sears for the whole season and hopefully McGoldrick will stay fit and find his form again to take away some of the burden from him.

If a Premiership club offers £4m I think he might go. Last chance for him to get a big contract & signing on fee, plus he might feel it's his last chance to play in the Premiership - we can't be we so arrogant to assume we'll go up this year.
He already owes us nothing given his performances, especially last season, so a fee of £4m would be quite a bonus.
I see Chris Wood is linked with a moveaway from Leicester today. He took a lot of flak on here last year, but I still think he is a good player and worth signing if available. He clearly wasn't fit when he arrived, but he did improve & his final game for us was pretty decent. IF Murph was to go he would be a very good replacement and is proven at Championship level. A run of games is all he needs to get his sharpness back.

It dawned on them (Cardiff) that murphy wouldn't want to take a step back in his career to a mid table championship club!

Elliott Hewitt Released
Jack Marriott Released
Paul Taylor Released
Anthony Wordsworth Released
Paddy Kenny Released
Paul Anderson No offer made
Stephen Hunt No offer made
Noel Hunt No offer made
Richard Chaplow Loan ended/No offer made

Are we going to replace anyone or just make do with what we've got minus one or two of our big names?

Chris Wood plus £5m and that would be a decent deal
Tommy would still have his target man to aim for - his old Kiwi mucker
I think a player plus deal makes sense . Woods is a decent Champ player , got some years in him and I thought just as he was getting fit again he was recalled

Let's hope we retain our best players, but if they are going, better now than on 31 August, where there is no time to bring in a replacement. Interesting to see plenty of teams are signing players today. Early business is best. I'm looking forward to discussing new signings rather than players who we may sell!!

I assume this means we've also ended our interest in Harry Kane.

Elliott Hewitt spent most of last year on loan and nowhere near the first team squad.
Marriot same
Taylor no where near first team all least season on loan and no contribution for 2 years.
WW spent most of last year on loan and nowhere near first team squad.
Kenny signed as short term cover due to injury and to all Crowe to goon loan.
Ando. Actually a first team player. Needs replacing, note reported agreement RE Aresnal youngster.
S Hunt.
N Hunt both squad members one only added after xmas last year
Chaplow as per N Hunt.

So not to great an impact on 1st team. A couple of youngsters will be closer to the furst team covers Marriot and Hewitt and we see the club is clearly looking to bring players i.

Just a bit of perspective.

not saying we dont need players but lets not panic yet hey? Seasons barely over.

blue and true So we'll make do with what we've got. We only need 16 if no one get injured. ITFC the definition of ambition.

"Cardiff interest"; why does the term "load of plonkers wasting everyone's time" spring to mind?

Surco72 added 22:14 - Jun 22
Squad was too small last season after we released more than we signed and we ran out of steam after Xmas which many predicted . Other teams are signing good players to challenge for promotion already , we need to do the same as August was a right off last year due to late panic deals

because we shop in the bargain bucket and for people everyone else has forgot about we have to wait until September to do our deals. MM such a professional.

This is all the same stuff that came out this time last year. Then we had our best season in a decade. I conceeded we need players my point is thataactually apart from Anderson all those released were on the periphery or rotation players at best.

At least half the list is over 30. I

In spite of having an average squad age of under 27 past year apprently we have too many so the aging, if not quite dead wood has been cut. That should please many given recent comments. People want youth, well if you want youth to come through you must offer opportunity and make space.

We need players but the right ones. Mick proves again and agaun that he's canny and he will be again. Just saying, dont panic. We dont have to nake do with anything at the moment. The season hasn't started.

+ don't forget the release of Sowunmi and Wyatt, and Varney, though with us, will be out for a long time.
12 players out so far. Shouldn't be an issue though. We have plenty of time still to replace these players (these 12) and add to the squad
