Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday Linked With Murphy
Thursday, 9th Jul 2015 13:25

Norwich City are reportedly considering making a move for Town’s 27-goal Championship top scorer Daryl Murphy, while Sheffield Wednesday are claimed to have made an offer for the 32-year-old Irishman.

According to the Irish Sun, the newly-promoted Canaries are weighing up whether to make an offer for Murphy, with whom they were previously linked last month.

Town are said to be “wary” of doing a deal with their greatest rivals and play-off opponents.

We understand that there is something in Norwich's reported interest in the striker, although whether they follow that up with a bid remains to be seen.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail reports that Sheffield Wednesday - where Murphy spent time on loan in 2005 while a Sunderland player - have made a £4.25 million offer for Murphy. Town are said to want £5 million for the frontman.

Although not one of the many Premier League and Championship clubs previously mentioned in connection with Murphy, we understand that the Blues have received interest from the Owls, who were taken over by Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri earlier in the year.

The Blues recently turned down a £4.5 million offer from Middlesbrough for the Irish international.

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy reiterated his intention to keep the Irish international at Portman Road: “We don’t want to sell Daryl Murphy, we don’t want to lose Daryl Murphy.

“He’s still on a break because he’s only had a couple of weeks [off since being away with Ireland]. That’s what I’ll be telling him, and his agent - we want to keep him.

“He was the outstanding striker in this league last season and it would be difficult to fill his boots. We’re going to try and keep him.”

Murphy has said on a number of occasions he that he has no plans to leave Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk.

The Waterford-born frontman signed a new contract with Town last July, which has another year left to run with the Blues having an option to extend it for a further season.

Considering Van Persie (7 months younger than Murphy) is going to Fenerbache for 4.5mill, Id say its a decent price for Murphy...

Tim ... they like Boro have offered less because the players reps have released that he is open to a move which is different to a club just wanting a player who is happy to stay

Fine, if thats how it is. £5m to everyone who wants him except scum. If they want him, they pay us £10M!

Is the Irish Sun in line for a commission from the sale of Murphy? They don't half seem to be pushing stories of bids (were the original source for all the Boro stuff).

If we get £5m for Murphy, then let him go. I know he's good, but he's 32 years old so he can go to Norwich and I doubt he'd do nearly so well for them in the PL. We already got £8m for Mings which is way too much if you compare the quality with Cresswell, so MM will have loads of cash. Also just 'cos he hasn't spent anything yet, doesn't mean a thing. The last thing we want is for him to go wasting cash on nobodies like Priskin for example. I trust MM to find a good younger replacement for Murph.

All I'm seeing at the moment is rumours about our players being sold. I also see other clubs, similar in stature to us, spending money and putting in big bids for players. We don't seem to be interested in signing anyone. Said it before and will do so again (despite it not being popular on here), we are currently NINE squad players down on the one which finished last season. I see no point of selling Murphy or anyone else, as we will only replace one of our players with another clubs player on loan, a free transfer or not bother to replace at all.

It is good in some ways that interest is being shown in our players once again, and that they are worth something in the transfer market;but hey aren't we,and hopefully Messrs Evans and Mc Carthy still harbouring hopes of reaching the promised land.As JAS says wont do that by selling all your best players.

Unlike some, still think Mick might tie up a couple of deals for players to come in, before the kick off or window closes as plenty of time yet, although was a bit concerned to hear Mick seeming happy with squad he now has, saying 22 was about right.

Not sure how many of the youngsters he was including in this figure;but he is a crafty (silver)fox, and with his previous dealings, they often come out of the blue.

Like JAS however feel that should have a bit more ambition to show Murph and Didsy that ITFC are serious in their quest for Premiership football;because I think you can only go so far with loans and freebies and need to pay out occasionally to buy the players that will get us over the line.

Absolutely spot on BacktheBlues.

It's not about money it's about replacing what we have and we couldn't get anyone better for any amount of money.

I believe this could be our year, everything is falling into place nicely and we only need a few more players to complete Micks master plan. COYB

I am kind of expecting one of the strikers to be sold thus proving to the other we cannot or will not invest and they will follow. Splashing the cash on new stars us not the only way to prove ambition but I doubt the club can do enough to prove it at this stage if a decent offer is made for either.

Think the one thing that could put this all to bed is if we offered Murph a new improved contract based on what he did last season!! Yea he's 32 and going to turn 33, but he's deceptively quick for a big guy, fit as a fiddle and really does lead the line so well. He is settled at the club and in the area, offer him a 2 year deal, he would no doubt retire here if given the chance. With better wingers he will recieve better service and could score 20 next season at least again!!! Show faith in Murph and we will reap the rewards

Give Murph a contract extension unless voices a desire to go.
He's earned it either way, but I personally would love him to stay. He'd be a great senior player to have for the next couple of years. Bags of experience to pass on.
Try only to sell if he wants that fairytale last chance (whatever his reason) that much and thinks he'll play, pluswe get the same money as Mings, and he goes to a Prem club. Nono account to a rival in the Champ. That's madness.
Mick is shrewd and as I've said before, does some great business.
Whatever happens with individuals, I think Mick and Terry will be plotting their next moves way ahead of our speculations.
Keep Calm And Carry On, Blue Army!

......... Murph' wants a move - SIMPLE. Get used to the idea, because sooner or later it's gonna happen.

And the only people who don't know why - are those who don't want to acknowledge the truth

Guess you all know what an Ostrich does with it's head - some have been doing it long enough.

jas0999 ........... totally share your obvious frustrations - but are you REALLY surprised at the current goings on (or not as the case is/maybe) ??

This is OUR current ITFC - and sadly, perfectly satisfactory for far too many.

Murphy doesn't want to move his family. Probably true.
Would he like one last crack at the Prem, whilst in the fitness & form of his life? Probably true.
Would he like a massive pay rise? Who wouldn't?
Do Town fans want him to go to Norwich? Most definitely not.
Would McCarthy receive massive stick from Town fans if he sold him to Norwich. Deservedly yes.

Why if we sell either Murph or MacG, did we even entertain selling Mings? That's not building a team to win promotion! Yes, sell the older stars if you must, but keep the young ones!

I would sooner sell him to Norwich than let any of our Championship rivals have him.

Same goes for Didsy

When I was down the pub with Murph and Didz and they were telling me that they wanted to leave and why, they also asked if there was anyone that used The TWTD site that I could recommend to take over the running of a Championship football club.
I said that there was one person in particular that seemed to know exactly what was happening or was going to happen so they would seem ideal.
We left it at that but I said that I would put that persons name forward should any vacancies arise.

Yes have to agree...starting to get the feeling although we've got £8M for Mings that we're not going to see a lot if any spent on transfers and again relying on a relatively thin squad and picking up some freebies AND loans (saying that though Pitman hopefully will be a very good one).

So Norwich beat us 3 times last season and then consider bidding for our talismanic star striker..? AND SOME PEOPLE ARE OK WITH THIS..??!! Beggars belief...

I despair supporting this club sometimes. Yes, he's 32. This is 2015 - thanks to modern medical science and training techniques players can be competitive into their late 30s. Yes, his contract expires next year and he could go for free. SO WHAT! He arrived on a free! Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Murphy won't score 27 again next season - he's still good for 16-18. And did anyone see the range of goals he has in him? Left foot, right foot, headers, tap-ins, 25 yarders. His hold up play, dashes towards goal, flicks and touches. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush...

As Mick McCarthy has already said - THE SQUAD IS BASICALLY COMPLETE. Didz and Murph stay. Didz drops into midfield. Sign one player - a right back - and we've got strength and depth. Wake up, fer chrissakes...

Slambo,

Agree with most of what you say, but the squad is far from complete. As jas009 has already said, we are 9 players down from last year (and when push came to shove we didn't have enough players last year). We need to replace these players.

Way way; they won't give us Hooper. It would be Ricky Van Wolfswinkel or Jamar Loza. Maybe MM could get Van Wolfswinkel back to his best, I don't know. But we wouldn't get Hooper. They might try and tempt us with a left-back of course (Bassong would be the obvious one there as he's bound to go out on-loan this season).

Ideally we need to keep our strike force. Murphy, Sears, MCgoldrick, Pittman and (as back up when he comes back) Varney are a good combo. As good as any strike force in this division. Lose MCgoldrick and Murphy though and things will look very different up front.

We need to start hearing rumours about us being linked with full-backs.

Slambo added 14:46 - Jul 10
PJewellisaGod - no, you're right, we are still a few players short. But I would say (with the exception of a starting right back) the CORE of the squad is complete. The 9 players we've shorn were squad players (apart from Mings, of course). These empty spots in the squad have almost been replaced, or could easily be absorbed by players currently at the club - let's not forget that Connolly, McDonnell and even McGoldrick are practically new signings this year...

Speculating on strikers grabs headlines, but it's detrimental if it's a settled area of the team. I just feel like it tempts fate if people entertain the idea of Murphy or McGoldrick leaving. Silly really. But yeah, a left back and a right back and we are sorted. And the left back only needs to be a squad player, as far as i'm concerned, or even a youth player...
