Hearts Defender Linked
Tuesday, 28th Jul 2015 10:36

Town are reported to be considering making a move for 19-year-old Hearts defender Jordan McGhee.

According to the Scottish Sun the Blues are set to make a bid for the East Kilbride-born central defender or right-back.

McGhee came through the ranks at Tynecastle and has won Scotland caps with the U15s, U16s, U18s and U21s, who he captains.

Having broken into the Hearts first team late in 2012/13, McGhee has gone on to make 32 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

McGhee has already attracted interest from Premier League clubs and in 2013 Juventus were reported to be keeping tabs on him. In January he signed a new Hearts contract which runs to the summer of 2017.

Town boss Mick McCarthy has said he is looking to add to his defensive cover with 18-year-old Matt Clarke set to join Portsmouth on loan.

Seems quite an experienced lad for 19. Would welcome this addition as a right back, but left back is still a problem area that needs sorting!

Add last we are linked with a RB! decent amount of game time under him considering he is on 19! must be a decent player to be playing at that age

Go for it, we do need a right back. I love chambers as a player and as a person but he is not a right back.

This boy is really highly rated in Scotland and could be a great signing , hope there is some truth in this one . A Scottish right back , now that takes me back ...

Personally i would of rather seen Clarke kept and been first reserve for first team, BUT this lad looks experienced and can play on the right so he sounds like good cover

"Central defender or right back" - do we know in which position he's mainly been playing for Hearts?

Personally, I'd like us to get in a specialist right back (and left back for that matter) who could go straight into the first team and hit the ground running. Would have been good to have had some pre-season time to gel.
This still sounds promising though, if he's ready and predominantly a right back.

Im sure Berra may have some inside information on this lad via the international set up.
Another leader type and experienced for such a young age.

I hope this gets done quickly :)

98.375% this is paper talk, if we were looking at him we wouldn't hear about it until its done

To be fair wasn't Zeki Fryers supposedly a specialist full back? Get what your saying though we are in desperate need of a right back and a left back I just don't know who I would drop between smith Berra and chambers, you would think you can't drop your captain?

harsh to drop anyone. Matter of opinion... I would have Berra and Smith in

Would be good if we could get this lad, but "According to the ... Sun," "are reported to be considering," and "are set to make a bid" don't usually amount to anything. Hope I'm wrong, as this is the kind of young potential I'd like to see us bring in. Also, I like the shirt. Could we have it as our second strip? The "Barcelona" is ok, but I'm not fond of the yellow shoulder stripes.

If Juventus were looking at him and hes U21 captain for his country then he's no mug. Sounds very promising to me.

Good prospect, U21 captain. BUT the report has come from the scottish SUN so nothing to see here

Well sounds promising...I wonder what Hearts would want for him being such a prospect?

About 10 days ago I heard from a normally reliable source that Stephen Kelly would be joining us on a free last week. Mick not commiting to the Clarke loan move, while still saying that it was going to happen, seemed to indicate that some small surmountable issues remained. Looking less likely now though - perhaps a rival with better contract terms entered the fray. Would be (have been) a very good addition at right back and made the defence look very strong at Championship level.
This lad looks a very good option also and, as others have said, seems to have gotten a lot of experience at a young age. However Hearts will play in the Scottish Premiership this season, so he might not want to swap that opportunity for the Championship down south. Also if a number of Premiership ckubs & Juve have been looking at him, with all those under age caps, he won't come cheap. Are we likely to pay £1.5m+ for a 19 yerars old defender? Personally I feel that we should be taking such risks when young talent is identified. Look at Cresswell & Mings; even signings of over £1m would look cheap if you sell on for £8m.

Yes, we are desperate for a rb, can't argue with that. But why are some saying we're desperate for a Lb? Parr is more that adequate for that role I'd say.

Finally linked with a RB

Read this with a pinch of salt. No truth in it whatsoever

@Len_Brennan Stephen Kelly is a bit of an emotional bloke and a journeyman who falls out with some of the managers he works for it seems... I'd be surprise if he was a target for Mick, but he is out of contract, so who knows? He is also Irish. I half suspect Mick is actually assembling the Republic of Ireland in Blue to prove he is better at getting the most out of the team than the current management.

I have a friend who is a Hearts supporter. He says: 'McGhee is a very promising CH/RB who is a regular in the match day squad but not a regular starter. He's 19and very highly thought of. Be surprised if he left Hearts this year as it's probably his breakthrough year but who knows? He's interested Manchester City and Real Madrid in the past.'
