Town Targeting Two
Saturday, 15th Aug 2015 22:48

Town MD Ian Milne has revealed that the Blues are currently involved in discussions with a view to adding two players to the squad.

Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch at lunchtime about the £8 million fee achieved for left-back Tyrone Mings earlier in the summer, Milne said: “We’re very pleased, it’s given us a lot of latitude and we’ll see what else happens, there maybe a few other things going on at the moment.”

One of the two players currently being targeted is Hearts defender Jordan McGhee with various reports in Scotland claiming the Blues had a further offer of £500,000 turned down towards the end of the week.

Town were already understood to have had two previous bids rejected by the SPL side but with negotiations having been continuing.

McGhee, a 19-year-old right-back or centre-half, who captains Scotland at U21 level, came on as a sub in the 54th minute as Hearts won 2-1 away at Ross County this afternoon.

Milne added: “We’ll get the right players in to be part of the team. Mick has said that you don’t want too big a squad because that starts friction and all the rest of it.

“There are some options we’ve got and there’ll be some options coming in, I’m sure.”

You can hear Life's a Pitch, which also features interviews with Tyrone Mings and Kieron Dyer, here.

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill was at Portman Road this afternoon running the rule over the likes of Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick.

The reports of £500K price tag or our bid may have been wrong? Perhaps they wanted add-ons we didn't/won't offer? It could be that if we can't get him through the door we will move for Stearman. Whoever comes in I think MM will still see Knudsen, Smith, Berra, Chambers as his first choice back 4 at the present, but Smith must be the one most likely to drop out barring injury/suspension to one of the others. I agree a winger is the most likely other player.

One of them needs to be a right back.

Chambers got caught out for their goal yesterday and earlier on when they hit the post. We have to finally sort this position out.

Ian Harte, that scumbag who got Marcus Stewart sent off and a 3 match ban in our relegation season, he would never be welcome in a blue shirt. Why do people throw out such names?

What I found disturbing in the interviews yesterday, is that the model the Club are following is the same one that resulted in administration and an all too brief spell in the Premier League. Also, the sale of Kieron resulted in a Town legend, Marcus Stewart, and a few others coming on board. They kept implying that we wouldn't have got Pitman, and Fraser on loan, if we hadn't sold Tyrone to Bournemouth, which is questionable to say the least. I do hope they know what they are doing, and are not blaming everything on George's dealings in the second close season (Sereni, Finidi et al.).

With two wingers there would be no room for Williams in the side.

Wednesday won the midfield battle yesterday and that was with us playing two holding midfielders in Skuse and Douglas. Swap either one of them for Williams and we would have been overrun and likely to have lost the game.

Lets get a new RB in. How about a CB like Stearman for the role that would solve our problems... hey.. must do... right.

One is obviously McGhee but I hope we are looking at a winger too, I'd like Will Buckley or Dean Cox. Both are very polished players that would add a lot to the squad. Cox is perhaps the best player in both League 1 and 2.

Wish people would give it a rest about the goalkeeper there is absulutely no chance of us signing a new No1 Mick rates both keepers and to be honest both are decent championship keepers. Get the lad from Hearts and we will be up there challenging.

Jimmy86. - yes Bart pulled off an excellent save. He also lost us two points the week before. First half yesterday he was very disappointing. Quite obvious the defence don't have a lot of faith in him either. We have two decent shot stoppers, but good keepers are more than that. They control their area. Sadly, Bart doesn't. Also you use the word 'moaning', you seem to not understand people are entitled to an opinion. It's not a moan, but an opinion based on performances to date. Mine is Bart is okay but not a top 2 keeper. He will pull off decent saves, but cost us points as well. Very average.

Quality keepers are very hard to find when your on a tight budget like us.What we have at present is good enough. What we really need is a good sound RB. Most of the goals last season and this against us have come down this side.I'm sure MM can see this and will put it right. We now have a good solid squad to which I think will get us into the top two positions.Remember we should now have six points had it not been for stupid defending at Brentford.COYB.

I totally recall the Ian Harte incident, Mick Mc is a admirer due to the Irish connection, with-in budget and great experience for Knudsen and to know he has scored 35 goals in the last 4-5 years.
People need to stop dwelling on the past.

So people are moaning about a new keeper, I ask you the question, who do you think we should have for no1, smithies (huddesfield) value 2 million don't think better that what we have, you say we need a big goalkeeper anyone want to stump up the cash to buy dedea or Adrian or lloris some on wake you, you cut your cloth, take mcgreagor from hull, Scottish no1 and was a very poor performer against wolves. or at least instead of your opinions give us your ideas.

I've just been thinking of the improvement this squad is compared to last year and no disrespect to the players I'm about to mention but I really feel we've strengthened a lot this year.

Striker options last year: Murphy Didzy Bajner Sammon Hunt Varney and Sears for the last part.
This year: Murphy Didzy Pitman Sears (whole season) & possibly Varney again when fit.

Midfield options last year: Skuse Hyam Bishop Bru Tabb Anderson Chaplow.
This year: Skuse Hyam (when fit) Bishop Bru Tabb Maitland-Niles Fraser Toure

Defensive options last year: Berra Smith Chambers Mings Parr
This year: Berra Smith Chambers Knudsen Emmanual Parr

Now assuming one of these targets is McGhee that's a lot more depth in the defensive side of the team and may be the answer to our RB problems, and like others have mentioned another winger of our own for backup would be the icing on the cake! I do feel we need another quality goalkeeper yes, but Bart has more good games than bad and is a whole lot better than Gerken IMO. Also there is no need to bring in somebody like Jonny Williams if we already have creativity in the team (Fraser, AMN, Bishop, Bru) and even Didzy in that if he gets into the team. A lot to be optimistic about this season! COYB

Steve Harper is still unattached after Hull released him at the end of last season, a step up from Paddy Kenny anyway?

RKL - I don't often post on here, but agree with your comments re Ian Harte - glad I am not the only one who well remembers what he did. That cannot be forgiven, ever.

Jas0999 I do accept people have an opinion and wasn't aiming my previous post at you directly, but I think yesterday, especially in the 2nd half Bart did control his area well and took pressure off the back 4 by claiming crosses and set plays. Plus who out there realistically and available is better than Bart?? Don't know of many personally

Have fond memories of the brilliant TWTD cover 'You're cheating Harte'. Would hate to see him in a town shirt!

If MM is going to play Chambers regularly at RB, then we don't need any more defensive cover right now. It's a self-inflicted weakness we can't afford, but hey ho. It again signals MM is not prepared to rotate his CBs. For a goalkeeper who improves on what we have already, I would look mainly at the squads of Premier League clubs, La Liga, Eredivisie, and Bundesliga, for a loan.
