Chambo: Best Feeling in the World
Monday, 28th Dec 2015 06:00

Luke Chambers says your team grabbing a last-gasp winner is the best feeling in the world, let alone scoring that goal yourself as the Blues skipper did on Boxing Day to complete’s Town comeback as they beat QPR 2-1 at Portman Road.

The 30-year-old headed home Freddie Sears’s cross from the left two minutes into injury time, Jonathan Douglas having equalised in the 77th minute after Junior Hoilett had put the visitors ahead just before half-time.

“It’s the best feeling in the world, not just when you personally do it, but when your team scores the winner in the last minute of a game,” Chambers said.

“I felt I was at fault for their goal so I was delighted to be able to score the winner — I needed to do that.

“The smallest player on the pitch has got across me and won the header so I have to hold my hands up for that. Thankfully I have come through for the team and scored the winner.”

Prior to Saturday Town had won just one of their last nine games at Portman Road and Chambers felt it was important to claim all three points at the weekend.

“I said to the boys before the day and again in the huddle before the game it was time we won at home again,” he added.

“Our record on the whole over 18 months at home has been fantastic so we were delighted to win at home again.

“We tried to approach every game the same way and if we can improve our home form and continue to do well away we will be fine.”

Saturday’s victory saw Town stay sixth and move a point behind Burnley - who the Blues face at Turf Moor next Saturday - with Sheffield Wednesday another point back in seventh.

“All we can is keep pace with the top teams,” the Town captain added. “We have fought hard to get into the top six, we had defeats against Derby and Middlesbrough, who I regard as among the best two in the division. “

Chambers thought wingers Ryan Fraser and Tommy Oar both made an impact when coming off the bench against QPR and that increasingly there is competition for places as the Blues enter the second half of the season.

“To be able to bring players like Ryan and Tommy Oar off the bench was amazing,” he said. “Luke Varney is back, we have Luke Hyam fit again and there is still David McGoldrick to come, so our squad is looking strong.

“It gives the gaffer a headache in terms of who to pick but at least he knows he can bring players in that are of the same level as those dropping out.”

Great cross and a cracking-good header. Went for it as if his life depended on it.

Being restored to centre half might just rival that feeling for Luke. Great whole hearted player & captain, who I am convinced would be a firm fans favourite, & who would probably have gotten the international call up he craves, had he been kept playing in his best position for us. Has given his all, but always looks the makeshift right back that he is and against the better sides, with quality on the wing, has been exploited as a weakness.
Not his fault, Mick.

Don't think Chambo is ever at fault for any goals MM chooses to play him out of position so it is his fault . Chambo always gives 100% and is a great captain .

As soon as I clocked Chambo steaming in at the far post I just knew he was going to score and we had won. Like he said best feeling in the world.

Cant knock anyone who is wholehearted and gives their best. We as a club after the 2 years McCarthy has been in charge should not have a makeshift player in any position.

after leadboots and edwards as captain, chambo is defo the captain we need, lives breaths eats and poos itfc, and it shows, yes pity he is playing out of his postion and bluefest is spot on we shouldnt have square pegs in round holes now, only through injuries.

keep it up chambo your the best captain we have had since matty holland

The best feeling in the world would be if McCarthy rightly restored the lad back to centre back!
McCarthy's stubbornnness will ultimately be his Achilles heel.

We do have a strong squad and I think it is time we made use of it. Keeping an unchanged side over all 3 Christmas games isn't going to do anyone any favours

Some good posts here agreeing with what I've been saying all season. He gets beaten in a one to one situation but so do most full backs.

Not only was it the best feeling in the world for Chambo but the best feeling in the world for us fans too!

Great that you stepped up and scored winner Chambo coz your performance was truly shocking as you yourself admitted. Worst RB in division but not your fault you're asked to play there. Fault of MM that we haven't filled the FB hole that we have on both sides of the pitch. It will continue to plague us all season unless we sort it. Great captain. Terrible FB. Great header.

As for the scummers up the road. Delia & Ed Balls. Hahahahaha. Do they really want to be hated by everyone. Marvellous !!!!!!!

Terrible game, great result. 6th in the table. What would it be like with a good midfield creater, a balanced defence and a goal keeper who controlled his area. Top 2 no doubt

Didn't see the game, just saw the highlights.

Two good things about our goals that stood out (apart from them being goals of course):

- Douglas so far advanced for the first (not many central midfielders get in those positions so good on him)
- for our second, the only person as high up the pitch as chambers was fellow defender smith so it's not like we weren't looking for that winner!

Great result!! Merry Christmas all town fans.

Get Luke in the middle and Parr into the RB slot (before jonny decides to leave) - my new years wish, please Mick!

Just stealing Warktheline's words, it will be, of Chambers and in fairness of other decisions, McCarthy's stubbornnness which will ultimately be his Achilles heel. And in doing that, it'll sadly be ours as a club. If you know he's a square peg in a round hole then why continue playing him there.

Talking of Round Pegs in Square Holes. AMN is an attacking midfielder who can play on the wing. He is essentially a centre midfielder so why not put him in the middle, in place of either Douglas or Skuse and that would allow Fraser to play on the right hopefully in an advanced position and not like AMN deep protecting the fullback. Sears should swop with Murphy as we know Murph can be effective wide. We are craving creativity in midfield and it appears Bishop is unlikely to return anytime soon ... Worth a try MM

Interesting idea Neill but he won't do it. McCarthy is basically a conservative and he will tend to keep the same team unless forced to make changes.

Re. "McCarthy's stubbornnness", he doesn't want to drop Smith or Berra as they are both solid performers so Chambers has to play at right back to accommodate him and because we don't have another strong option at right back. It's isn't a perfect situation, but it is how it is and being 6th in the table we should not complain too much.

Re " McCarthy is basically a conservative", I remember sitting through years of one up front (remember Scotland on his own?) now we have Sears, Pitman and Murphy all starting, with Maitland Niles starting too!

warktheline added 18:10 - Dec 28
@mark, chambers has played right back for two or more yrs, why hasn't McCarthy found a true full back? Smith hasn't been a a constant solid performer, having to play on his right foot has no doubt infringed upon his game. Berra, especially this season, hasn't been as solid as last season.
Why shouldn't I complain about 6th position in table? After our last campaign, I for one, expected better from all at Ipswich Town!!!

Don't think AMN is disciplined enough to play that role for me NeilRumsey. He switches off too often but that's indicative of his age.

What mattered was the end result which Chambers ably delivered. The way he came powering forward. Temporarily lost my mobile to the row in front in all the excitement. It's a squad game so he shouldn't shoulder all the blame and he has been playing really well of late, coming forward a lot more. It was a mistake that was turned into a success, which underpins the type of team we have & everyone makes mistakes - it's how you deal with it that counts .
