McCarthy: Youngsters Will Have to Step Up Next Season
Monday, 18th Apr 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says youngsters such as Andre Dozzell will have to step up next season with the emergency loan provision no longer available.

FIFA have forced the Football League to scrap the system, which has allowed clubs to sign players on short-term loans of up to 93 days outside transfer windows, as it “affects the sporting integrity of the competitions”, much to McCarthy’s frustration.

He says that will mean that youngsters such as Dozzell, who made a goalscoring debut aged 16 years and 350 days on Saturday, will have to play their part and augment his senior squad.

“Whatever it takes, I’m going to have to use them," McCarthy said. "We go into next season with no emergency loans.

“People inside the club are already asking me how many players I think we’ll need, the other staff, scouts, the director of football, coaches.

“We’ve used about 18 players this season. Everybody will scream, ‘No. you’ve not, you’ve used 26 now with Dozzer', but we’ve had Tommy Oar, who had a bit part, Bish, who has had five minutes, Didzy, who made his first start [since October on Saturday], Piotr Malarczyk, who had 10 minutes at Nottingham Forest and not much more.

“If you go through the squad, there’s probably been a real, solid nucleus of 18 players. That’ll be the same and on top of that there’ll be Dozzell, Adam McDonnell, James Blanchfield, Josh Emmanuel, Myles Kenlock, who was on the bench today.

“Those boys are going to have to step up and become part of the squad and they’re going to have to be the ones who might get 10 minutes, two or three starts with a solid squad of 18 players.”

Emmanuel, 18, and Kenlock, 19, signed pro deals earlier in the season having made their senior debuts, 18-year-old Blanchfield, who is yet to make his senior bow, was recently offered pro terms.

McDonnell, 18, whose only first-team game came in the Capital One Cup at Doncaster, is understood to have had an option for a further season included in the two-year deal he signed with Town when he joined from Dublin side Shelbourne in the summer of 2014.

Also amongst the young players likely to be involved with the first team squad next season is midfielder Kundai Benyu who has spent much of this season out with a knee injury but has recently returned to action. The 18-year-old was on the bench for the first team last season, although without making his debut, and signed a pro deal.

Centre-half Matt Clarke, 19, could also make an impact at Portman Road having spent this season on loan with League Two Portsmouth.

Some of the young players cited by McCarthy are likely to be involved with the U21s against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this afternoon (KO 1pm).

Midfielder Teddy Bishop, already an established member of the first-team squad at 19, has been pencilled in to play the full 90 minutes as he continues his comeback.

Having won three on the bounce, the U21s are up to sixth in their Professional Development League Two South table.

After reading this it sounds as if scrapping the emergency loan window could be very beneficial. Don't get me wrong I don't expect these players to set the world alight as soon as they come into the team but experience for a young player is invaluable. Too many will sit on the bench and never get a game which will halt their progress.

Originally I was annoyed at them getting rid of this but this articles changed my view.

They can't do any worse and also believe the youngsters have been coached on how to play football not hoofball so could be something to look forward to .

The end of the Emergency Loan system could end up being really good news if youngsters have to be given a chance. A bit like it was in the old days when our kids; Beattie, Whymark, Burley, Wark , Brazil etc etc all came through. Not so good for kids with Premiership clubs though!

What it does mean that established pros we sign need to be good enough, i.e. better than what we have (something MM says but doesn't practise). We don't need any more Cokes, Toures, Varneys etc who you would never pick as first choice. People who improve the team, not just add to the numbers in the squad. That used to be the policy and history would suggest that it was quite successful.

A reluctant tone to McCarthy in this article.

Young players can't "step up" without game time and the real experience that brings so this new ruling could be a blessing in disguise.

Mick states....
" “If you go through the squad, there's probably been a real, solid nucleus of 18 players. That'll be the same and on top of that there'll be....."

The way I read this is he is say we will continue with a core of 18 senior players . It DOESNT mean the SAME senior players that we currently have , as some I think will leave. And then the youngsters he names will come into the squad and have to step up to the mark.

I think this is actually exactly what we need. It MAKES the club use their own youngsters , instead of loaning them out to lower divisions. The only issue that may well happen , is those layers not really good enough to make the senior squad or senior players coming back from injury will only be able to play in this pathetic U21 league. This is the bit that needs to change ...back to the old Combination reserve league . Thanks to sky no one outside the PL can play in their Reserve League .

FIFA forcing the scrappage of the emergency loan system is the best thing to happen to this club. It will force MM's hand to play our promising youngsters. Felt so pumped for Dozzell on Saturday, well done lad!

It'll offer more opportunities to the youngsters and that's good, but don't be mislead as this will apply only to the strap cashed teams, like us, and not the richer and recently demoted teams. They'll be at a distinct advantage with two teams of quality senior players to draw from. Could be tough.

Klug is a top, top coach. I do worry that his footballing philosophy and Mick's don't really mix. Obviously, you can't suddenly have six youth team players all promoted to full-time first team duty; there's no doubt we'd be found out if we used too many new young players all at once, but surely we need to aim to get them on for more than "ten minutes/two or three starts" and also allow them to make mistakes. How will they progress otherwise?

I must confess I do not fully understand the ruling of the end of this, does this mean we can no longer loan prem players for a season, and loan our players down the leagues to gain experience? What sort of loans are still permitted?

I would say this is only going to benefit us actually as our academy outside the prem is one of the best around. So I am very for this if that's the case.

Does very little for prem clubs with youngsters galore who will no longer be able to go on loan,,, SHAME!

I would love to see the youngsters involved, but we should not put too much pressure on them and say they need to step up. The only people who need to step up is MM - who needs to sign enough quality players to play attacking football and ME who needs to significantly invest to ensure we have not only enough players to cope with the rule change, but also enough funds to sign quality additions which may mean fees.

yes a season long loan can still happen but no 93 day loans after the window has shut.

but like most has said i think this can only be a good thing to bring the youngsters on

How about scrapping loans and transfer windows altogether.
It would mean that the prem clubs would not be such an attractive option for youngsters who want to play regular competitive football.
Afterall I expect many of them would realise the only way not to be at the back of a very long queue would be to sign for a a lower league club with a more realistic chance of getting into the first team.

I see this as MM saying there won't be funds available to make sensible signings.

I heard earlier that Spurs have only used 1 player aged over 30 this season and that is a goalkeeper who has only played once. They have done alright using youngsters so if it can work in the Premier League surely it can work in the Championship. Next season has got to be the season to be bold and give youth it's chance!

Your not convincing me Mick! Personally I believe you've lost the passion for your current job. Sitting on a long contract, your hands tied, doing the 'best' you can do! All I can see is Groundhog Days!

Don't think there is anything Mick says that you can't laugh at. The youngsters will have to step up? A 16 year old has already stepped up and surpassed what most of our regulars have done all season. The man is deluded.

Step up! From what I saw Andre did! Perhaps he should step up and do what he's paid for, manage and coach players in the art of football, not how many yards we can get up the pitch. One week, I don't look at stats, then when it suits we run around more than any other team. Contradicts himself weekly if you listen to his interviews. God knows what he does at platford road during the week as our patterns of play don't change-ever! I know he hasn't spent any real money, but the art is coaching players to become more comfortable on the ball and pass to a team mate. I feel the club should offer neck braces along with our season tickets. Perhaps with the ELW going it will force his hand and we can get back to the days of being proud of how we used to play football. I just hope he doesn't ruin our young players in the process with his draconian methods and teachings. If not up to it, get Bryan klug to coach the first team too.

As usual this Dinosaur doesn't seem happy with the change.
This should be benefical to ITFC as it will stop McCarthy signing journeymen who are surplus to other clubs requirements as he has been and make him blood more youngsters, which he has been loathe to do.No regular 1st teamers currently are our own,and only Bishop as far I am aware is the only player to have made more than the odd appearance(Mings was brought in from Chippenham Town for £10k)

This will also suit Marcus Evans as his mouthpiece Milne expressed the wish some time ago for at least50% to come from the Academy.

Finally bringing on some of our youngsters will be great BUT we cannot rely on just doing that. We have to sign some quality players as well, instead of other teams cast offs, if next season is going to be any different to what we have had to put up with for too long now!

Will the Leopard change it's spots ?? ....... we can only hope so, but my guess is he wouldn't have a clue how to cope with such flair and creativity.

Prove me wrong Michael - and I shall be one of many very happy chappies, and renew my Season Ticket - BUT NOT UNTIL.

He's probably focussing on a few more 30+ year olds already.
