Ashton: We Have to Look at Recruiting a Different Type of Player Friday, 27th Jun 2025 21:49 Chairman and CEO Mark Ashton says the Blues will be looking at recruiting a different type of player with the physical attributes required to compete in the Premier League.
Having been relegated after one season in the top flight, Town will be looking to make an immediate return in the campaign ahead.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Ashton was asked what lessons can be learnt as the club aims to win promotion from the Championship and then secure a longer-term stay in the Premier League next time around.
“I think it’s recruitment, recruitment, recruitment,” he said. “One of the things that we learnt was that gap in the physicality, the physical attributes of players that are required in the Premier League.
“When we look to recruit players now in the Championship, we have to adjust and amend how we recruit players. We need to look at players with the physical attributes because the reality is [manager] Kieran [McKenna] can coach them, but you can’t develop the physical attributes to the level that you need to compete.
“So it’s an evolution for us. We have to look at recruiting a different type of player, a player with a different set of physical attributes.
“But let’s be under no illusions, if we get back to the Premier League, it will be equally as tough. We have to take the learnings from what was a very tough season.”
Ashton reiterated that McKenna, who speculation but little more linked with the Brentford job handed to former Blues loanee Keith Andrews earlier today, is fully committed to the club for the campaign ahead.
“Kieran and I talk on a daily basis,” he continued. “I gave him his opportunity when we took him from Manchester United, he took it with two hands and he’s done extremely well.
“Success brings challenges, he’s been coveted. We sat down right at the end of the season at my house one night, we looked each other in the eye and I said, ‘Are you in? Are you in for this, Kieran?’. And he was very clear, ‘Absolutely, Mark. I’ve got a job to do, I want to take us back up’.
“There’s always going to be noise around him but there also has to be a bond of trust and he’s looked me in the eye and said, ‘I’m in, I want to rebuild this football club’. We work very closely.
“There will always be noise around him, that’s the nature of the beast, but he’s a man I believe has integrity, he’s told the fanbase he’s going to be here and he wants to get us re-promoted.”

Be interesting to see who comes in. Are we set to start looking abroad? English players don’t seem to be taught to play physically anymore for some reason.

Everyone in football knows physicality is a pre-requisite of survival in the Premier League....except Ashton and his staff last season, apparently.

Players who have Pace, power and technique is the norm in the prem in every area of the pitch.

KM was an assistant at ManUre for how long? And everyone watches Prem games one way or another on TV - and you're telling me only now then you know that physicality is a pre-requisite to survive in the Prem?

Music to my ears Mr Ashton. Thank you. This type of player is sorely needed this coming season, right through the spine of the side.

Are we evolving our scouting network to find these players? I hope so, and look forward to seeing who we sign.

As usual, some commenting on here have no idea. The same ones who complained we should have, given more of the lge1 players , more time in the pl, now, saying they knew what type of player we needed. Talk about hypocritical. No1 knew just how hard it was gonna be. Also if ud bothered to listen to his interview properly, ud know he wasnt talking about players simply being physical. But having the physicality to last out games. So stop thinking you know better than they do. You dont.

FFS. Please stop talking. Yes, we were well short physically, but we were also way short technically, a lot of teams bullied us, but they could also play through us. Sadly. We weren’t coached to that world class level either, tactically, and strategically, in essence we were well short in pretty much every metric. It’s delusional at this point when Ashton speaks…, like an Egontrying to protect itself and cling on to straws. We could buy based more on this optic, and do even worse if we don’t address all of them, Clue. One of them is YOU - you aren’t good enough, the other is KM, very young, and maybe one day, but mikes off at the minute…, we didn’t improve the longer the group were coached, we got worse, and we made England internationals look poor by the end. Our talent ID was horrific…, and if we have the same people, the same process, the same ego’s struggling to even see what the issues are…, we’ll get the same outcomes. Sorry Mark. We didn’t fail because we didn’t have physical attributes. That wouldn’t make Leif capable of getting goal side, it wouldn’t help our shape, our tactics, our technical ability, our lack of confidence, motivation, or ability to mentality cope with adversity. The best players in the league, are TINY!!! And out 900 inside forwards are all tiny, they just (mostly) aren’t very good…, and KM playing Hutch as a 10, where he got bullied for 85% of the season…, wasn’t a physicality problem, it was mangers ego not wanting to be wrong. Play wide, where he gets more time, and he plays much better. This is terrifying levels of delusion…, I really fear for us now!!!!! This man is so far off elite it hurts. Not digging him out, KM hasn’t helped, but at least he’s very young. MA is 35 years in the game, and he has no idea what the problems and challenges even are at that level. 35 years…, club record failures at EVERY attempt at that level. Even if you were 100% right…, last summer was the chance…, it’s like he’s never seen a premier league game before!! I’ve never been so down about our prospects. World class owners, but an ego fuelled control freak with executive control and a manger who’s still a rookie at every turn. They both need better people around them.., that’s what elite is.., and they simply can’t do it!!! Don’t have it in them. Yeah…, sign a few big lads, that’ll work. West Han were massive .., but they’re one of the worst teams at that level…, and they could have been 4 ft nothing, and would still have beaten us, because they were levels ahead on quality, and that’s the minimum standard. Deluded doesn’t even come close. Second to a poor Plymouth, starting to think 23/24 was the outlier here…, and the other 34 years of mediocrity and getting sacked at Wycombe were the norm. We aren’t better off in the EFL, it won’t all be amazing, and YOU have to start taking some agency, some accountability, some responsibility. .., and no, we didn’t fail because the players YOU signed were too small.., sake!! They weren’t good enough!!! Some of them aren’t even Championshio quality…, (Muric) and he’s a giant!!!!!!!

We need 5, 7 ft tall players who are 16 stone plus and run 100m in 9.5 seconds. Oh yeah and water is wet.

I see Darkhorse has ChatGPT out again. We all understood your opinion with the first sentence, no need to regurgitate it 7 times. This season is a new challenge for everyone at the club. As well as everyone performed in the promotion years, they will be soon forgotten should we be mid table this season

Yep we need to recruit players who can get us back into the PL and keep us there. Not only we’re not physically strong enough last season, the players weren’t mentally strong enough either.

Really pleased to hear McKenna wants to stay and build another team. He is learning his trade in a great place. Football clubs spit out managers all the time and leave them unemployable, there is no need for him to rush his career, as a manager he could have 30 years ahead of him.
bigolconnor added 00:08 - Jun 28
What a long post that was. We came up from division 1 and competed in virtually every game in the prem. We will probably get promoted again and then hopefully stay up and then hopefully maintain status. Just enjoy it. It’s wasted energy worrying about football. It’s just entertainment. This season will be more entertaining. Enjoy it. That’s what it’s for.

The thing is, football fans have nothing to do atm. This is why the posts get longer and longer without necessarily saying anything worthwhile. See, I just did that too. And on And on

I very rarely call out any other poster, we all have and are entitled to our ( often! ) different opinions. I'd rather try and have a sensible discussion if at all possible, so I'm not going to this time either. Except to say I'm almost lost for words for a post above, and lost interest about a third of the way down, so if there are any valid points in there, I won't see them!
