McCarthy Confirms Tabb Exit, Stewart Remains Available
Thursday, 5th May 2016 13:39

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that midfielder Jay Tabb will be moving on at the end of the season with his contract up. The 32-year-old hasn’t played a Championship game this season, although has made four cup starts, scoring one goal.

The Blues boss reiterated that winger Cameron Stewart, who has a year left on his contract, remains available for transfer.

The 25-year-old has made only two cup sub appearances since joining the Blues in the summer of 2014 - both during 2014/15 - and spent most of this season on loan in League One with Doncaster Rovers.

“Cameron Stewart’s been up at Doncaster and he’ll be moving on in the summer, other than that Tabby will be freed,” McCarthy confirmed.

“He’s been fabulous, he’s one who without playing a game all season could have won the ‘most selfless player award’ because he comes and trains every day, when he’s played in the cup games he’s played well, he trains well, he’s a prime example to any young player. He really is a fantastic character and hopefully I’ll see him tomorrow.”

Tabb joined Town initially on loan from Reading in March 2013 and made the switch permanent that summer following his release by the Royals. The former Ireland U21 international went on to make a total of 61 starts and 24 sub appearances, scoring five goals.

The Blues boss says he’s not yet spoken to any other players, including the likes of Luke Varney and Larsen Touré, who are both out of contract this summer, about whether they will be offered new terms

Having said that Luke Hyam’s agent has accepted the offer of a new contract last week, he says there are so far no further developments on a new deal for Tommy Smith, although like the midfielder the centre-half is tied down to the club for another season in any case.

“They’ve both got one year left, we took up the option on both of them and discussions are still ongoing with Marcus and their agents,” he added.

Tabb on the left was never going to be the answer, but when he played there last season he did a job and never let the team down. Is he any worse than Douglas?! Will remember his goal against Boro, where he beat 2 big centre backs to score a header he had no right to win.

Tabby would be a briliant signing for a League 1/2 club. Don't for a second think he's on 10k a week - £5k maybe? Wonder what he'd to persuade him to sign for a lower team? One for ColU maybe?

TR11BLU I am glad I am not alone in thinking as you do.
What on earth is McCarthy talking about? He needs to get in the real world where people have to work to earn a living!

If Stewart is under contract then he won't necessarily be going anywhere.

Maybe not even 5k a week but none the less earning a decent living for nothing!

Super Frans, it's all well and good us thinking players like Tabb are on 3-6k a week but with our wage bill up £4 mill in the past 3 years I very much doubt it.

We don't pay much for fees but our wage bill is pretty damn high.

If you do the maths, if we did pay players like Tabb £5k a week, then other players would be on £25-£35k so I think we have quite a few on £7-10k that we wouldn't expect to be the case personally.

Truth is if he played another game for us his wages would of jumped up to 10k, that's why he never played another game for us.

I can well believe that dav there is something fishy about him not having played a single league minute all season.

Definitely shafted.

Always tried hard but not sure why not given a game this year as no worse than the regulars .

I think Tabb has been a good player, he is a model pro, does work hard, doesn't complain and does his job when called upon.

In spite of being labeled one of Micks faves he hasn't plated a league game all season and he didn't get loads of minutes in his first full season with us either. Not once have we seen toys out of the pram.

Strikes me as a good bloke and a good character to have around. Not a world beater but an absolute terrier who for me could have been used much more in a central role.

With that in mind, Thanks Tabby and good luck at your next club

MM told him he could leave last Summer. That would indicate to me that Tabb wasn't in his plans. Tabby wanted to stay. He can't have expected to play much. Not that 'fishy' for me.

Tabb wasn't good enough last season and MM kept picking him to prove a point , did he suddenly become worse over the , summer or our team so much better ? No just MM being stubborn exactly the same as he did with Nouble the season before and has done with Douglas this year .

Henshall, Stewart ,Mallacyz, Tabb, Varney , Coke , Toure even on £5 grand a week each is a lot of money wasted

Aww will be a shame to see him leave but it is his time to go. He has been a great little (no pun intended) for us. Very loyal, determined and always put in a solid performance. Wish him all the best

Not given enough credit by Town fans during his time here, but great attitude, genuine pro, and decent bloke by all accounts. Hope he does get another contract somewhere - would be a great asset to a League 1 club IMO.

Thanks Tabby.

Chambers on 6K a week? So all the money goes on contracts does it. This is peanuts these days and why we will always be second rate until Evans PLC sells up

He has had a good time at PR picking up good money for doing virtually nothing all season----and another guy is about to do the same next season.

The club must be run better----perhaps it is eventually waking up?
