McCarthy: Outcast Stewart Could Work His Way Back Into My Plans
Saturday, 2nd Jul 2016 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says out-of-favour winger Cameron Stewart could get the chance to revive a Town career which looked to be over before it had even started.

The 25-year-old, pictured above enjoying a joke with Tommy Smith, Adam McDonnell and Cole Skuse at pre-season training on Tuesday, joined the Blues on a three-year deal in the summer of 2014 following his release by Hull City after a proposed move to his former loan club Leeds had broken down.

The one-time Manchester United trainee looked set to start the 2014/15 in the Town team but suffered a broken jaw in the final pre-season friendly at Leyton Orient and spent a number of months on the sidelines before finally making his debut as a sub in the FA Cup tie at Southampton and then appearing from the bench in the replay at Portman Road.

Those two games against the Saints remain the Mancunian’s only appearances for Town. He ended his first season on loan at Barnsley and was left out of the party which travelled to Ireland for Town’s annual pre-season training camp ahead of 2015/16 and was made available for transfer.

He joined League One Doncaster Rovers on loan for the first half of the campaign and subsequently extended his spell to the end of the season. In April, McCarthy reiterated that Stewart was available and said that he expected him to move on in the summer.

However, speaking at Tuesday’s first training session of pre-season, the Town boss said Stewart had returned in good shape, impressed him during testing the previous day and has given himself a chance of coming back into his plans.

“There’s been a bit of interest in him, but he’s done his bleep test and he’s come back really fit this time, so I didn’t have to fall out with him!” McCarthy said.

“If he’s of that mind and he wants to work hard and be involved in the squad and be fit then I’ll take him to Ireland and we’ll see because he’s got ability. But there has been a bit of interest in him.”

Asked whether the slate had now been wiped clean, he added: “Not quite a clean slate, clean-ish. He came back on the first day and did well, so that’s the first day, but he’s got a lot of work to do. I’d love him to do it and to be a success, but that’s down to him.”

Hmm, smells of desperation.... Can save cash if he keeps him here as a winger...
Nog necessarily a bad thing...

If his attitude is spot on then give him a go we're paying him for christ's sake.

Would show an amazing piece of management to get Stewart living up to the player we thought we signed.

At the end of last season Mick stated that Stewart wouldn't be part of his plans. We can only assume that we really are going to make do if Cameron is now back in the plans. Promotion seems a long way away.

Or jas0999 he has grown up?

McCarthy often gets critisism for being stubborn. Isn't this refeshing that a player once outcast for returning to pre-season training completely unfit, then given another chance because he's learnt his lesson, bucked his ideas up and this time seemingly returned fit and hungry to impress? Of course it's true it's cheaper if he can utilise the players he has, but Cameron owes this club and it's about time he started being professional. I hope he has decided to start using his talent rather than waste it, and is taken to the training camp this year and does what the club pay him a lot of money to do, work hard!

Let's hope so, Wickets.

Having not exactly set the world alight at Doncaster and with only one year left on his contract, maybe he's realised that he could end up at a League 2 club or worse next season.

With Fraser, AMN, Feeney, Henshall and Oar no longer around, now's the time to stake his claim and start living up to his potential.

I'll just add to flyings comments - he said that about Paul Taylor and then when he released him said he never had a chance.
He also said that Chambers would be in the squad as a centre half this season and has already contradicted that.
Our manager is full of it and I don't believe a word he says.

This is Mick saying, have you come back with a changed attitude for our benefit or are just putting on a spurt because you know there's been interest from other clubs?

Good point about Paul Taylor! Cameron should look at him as a perfect example of how your career could go if you continue to waste it, once he finds out whatever happened to Taylor of course! Has a club actually signed him since he left??

Sounds like Mick is playing a clever game, remember Paul Taylor had a clean slate too?

Forget Stewart, waste of space. He won't be playing this season. Go get Hal Robson-Kanu, he can play wing & is a goal scorer.. Free agent Phil, I believe?

I remember watching him in a friendly against Colchester the season he signed and thinking this guy is actually pretty good and one of the better wingers we'do seen for a couple of years. If he's prepared to put the work in he could be a very talented winger and very affective for us. If he wants to improve we're the team he needs to do it with because in terms of career progression he won't get in a better club I wouldn't think!

Langdon_Blue - Taylor is now a free agent, couple of short term deals since he left but never played many games for either Rotherham or Blackburn. Taylor was a bad penny at the club, causing issues behind the scenes and getting rid of him has proved good business on both the spirit and footballing side of things.
Anyhow loving the optimism so far from so many 'fans'. Appears to me that Stewart has realised that the grass is not greener at other clubs and 'higher placed' clubs than Ipswich are not coming after him. Ipswich offers the opportunity to possibly get back into either the Premier League or put himself in the shop window for a bigger club and therefore has come back fit and wanting to prove a point. Also for him it would be good on his CV to say 'i proved Mick wrong'.
Yes like many people I keep checking each day on TWTD for that signing to happen, the one which gives you the feeling that this is the year and yes, like many I am disappointed so far. But one thing I wanted last season and I think most of us did was the youngsters to be given a chance. As things stand, this will happen as our squad numbers require this, even if as a substitute to start of with however compared to last year when we had 'journeymen' sitting on the bench, this will be a step forward and progress.

Let us all hope he can get the wingers sorted out before the season starts and not put Sears out wide, because that is when his Goals dried up ??????
No Frazer or Ainsley this season, may be with the rumour of Mings about, perhaps he could play on the left wing for us ?????

Was a bad signing ... Think MM may be struggling to attract players ?

Be good to keep him, but he still needs a couple of wingers!!
Bishop out wide really? At least he didn't mention Sears playing out wide.

Well, that pretty much sums up Mick 'Square pegs in round holes' McCarthy, of the fact that concerning this with Stewart it just smells of desperation in the need of saving money and not going out to get someone. And the idea of playing Bishop out wide, jeez!! This season is going to be a repeat of last season, if not worse, what with having Newcastle, Villa and Norwich now.

There is still 5 weeks before the season starts and we all know how MM likes to keep things close to his chest so just give him a chance and see what happens.

I f Mick can get him playing would be a real asset
Give the lad a chance

Would be easier not to fall out with your players in the first place...

I'm getting slightly worried with additions this summer as it looks we've broken the bank just to sign Webster, and have no money left in the kitty to spend on some decent wingers. We had the 8 million quid we got last summer for Mings which helped us bring in Fraser and even AMN, and I just cannot see where and what players we are likely to bring in this summer. We are currently looking much worse off than last season and with the money being splashed around, that is quite worrying.

I don't think it smacks of desperation. I think it's good business. If a piece of property you own is broken then fix it. If Stewart is back fit and raring to go and MM & TC can get him firing back to his full potential then why are people moaning. Top six this season a nailed on cert.
